This video describes what happens in my class and some of what you experience when reading an introductory ethics book. After watching this video, you will have a basic understanding of each ethical theory including the major ethical theories of Utilitarianism, Deontology, and Virtue Ethics. If you are in my class, this video is a roadmap to the course. In Week 1, we start with logic. For the next few weeks, we cover one ethical principle each week. For 3 of those weeks, we cover three wisdom traditions. For more, visit my ethics course at https://lucidphilosophy.com

UNESCO is asserting that at its core, climate change is an ethical issue. In a broad consensus, the organization’s 195 Member States adopted a global Declaration of ethical principles in relation to climate change during the 39th Session of its General Conference (Paris, 30 October to 14 November). UNESCO’s Declaration aims to help governments, businesses, and civil society mobilize people around shared values on climate change. lt sounds the alarm that, unless ethical principles become the basis of climate action, both climate change and responses to it could create unacceptable damage and injustice. http://en.unesco.org/climate-ethics

This episode provides didactic material about ethical decision-making, which does not lend itself to a conversation. The importance of this podcast and Episode 5 is to set up vignette analysis in future podcasts. Everyone needs to be on the same page in order to apply ethical decision-making in instructional or real life situations. At the end of this video, the participant will be able to: 1. Describe the differences between ethical and clinical decision-making, 2. Outline the Acculturation Model, and, 3. List the five foundational principles for ethical decision-making. Applying the 14 Ethical Principles How do we understand these 14 ethical principles, use them as a check list, for example, the boss has asked me to do something and I do not know if it is right or wrong, you can use the principles as a check list and say well the boss has asked me to take money from the company till and give it to a charity, according to the Ends-Means Ethic that’s ok, but you can say that it is bad for the organization because I am stealing from the organization so it violates the Organizational Ethic, that’s bad, and you can also say for example in the Theory of Justice because we are giving money from company funds we are maintaining the bonds of society so even though we are taking money from the company till it is still ok, so you have to ask yourself out of any of these ethical principles which one is the most important, if you were to say well the Organizational Ethic is the most important to me and none of these others matter that much then obviously you would not take that money, on the other hand if you thought that the Ends-Means Ethic was more important then you might go with that, so you kind of have to use it to weigh different kinds of possibilities, so that you can come up with the best ethical decision for you, so a lot of these decisions are dependent on you and how you think through these principles, only you can decide which of these 14 ethical principles is most important to you In any corporation that you will be a manager in… set an example first and foremost, people will follow an example more than they will follow anyone of the 14 ethical principles, and of course don’t just preach ethics, live them, live the values you preach, that’s important, try to cultivate some sort of charity or sympathy in other people, and remember any sort of perfection when you have all these different ethical principles is a dream or a farce, at some point you will be faced with some decision that will not be clear cut and dry, some of the principles might be disregarded and other upheld, it is just a way to make the best decision for the situation using a tool.

"There is nothing quite like the silence of a cold fall morning being shattered by the surrounding bugle of a bull elk. Nature has a way of creating visual poetry that a pen simply can not duplicate. Every day God paints a masterpiece that captivates our minds at the wonders of his creation… And New Mexico is one of his works of art that is named very appropriately... The land of Enchantment."
