How Ship Anchor Works? - Procedure For Anchoring a Ship at Sea
#Anchor #shipanchor #windlass Anchoring is one of the very frequent operations onboard ships. A number of variables and external factors influence the duration and location of an anchoring operation. While the type of seabed is of utmost importance during anchoring, soft muddy grounds or clay bottoms are best preferred. It should be taken care that the anchoring bottom is free of power lines, submarine cables, pipelines or rocks. Various methods on anchoring include consideration of direction and strength of wind, current and tidal stream. Often good local knowledge helps a mariner determine required manoeuvres and actions to be taken while anchoring. This operations comes under the responsibility of deck officers. It involves the use of critical shipboard equipment and requires high level of situational awareness. The key responsibility of the deck officer at an anchor station is to use the anchoring machinery and available man power for carrying out the operation safely and efficiently in accordance with the master’s instructions. In most of the cases, theoretical guidelines and bookish knowledge are helpful only to an extent. Situational awareness and spontaneity of the officers, and their instant decision making capability helps to carry out the operation fruitfully. A good knowledge of ship’s maneuverability and the limitation of the equipment involved will further help the officer to make such spontaneous decisions. The competency of the officer is decided upon his ability to consider the situation, command his crew and to assess the orders give by the Master, to carry out the operation safely and efficiently. Quick guide for anchoring powerboats
Quick guide for anchoring powerboats by coastal safety at coastalsafety.com This is a summary of the main points to bear in mind. Many people ask why the length of anchor chain should be at least 10m or the length of the vessel if longer than 10m. Simply, this is as required for commercial vessels in the UK. A shorter chain may be sufficient in calm conditions when anchoring for a "tea break". However, when your engine is not starting and a wind or current is pushing you towards rocks, you will be glad of the length of chain.

4 anchoring with one anchor 1
Anchoring with one anchor: On the Nautical chart, select and mark the position at which you intend to anchor. Make your approach slowly into the wind or current, whichever is stronger, to the spot you have selected. Stop the boat and drop the anchor, allowing it to reach the sea bed. Then slowly back the boat away, downwind or down current to stop the chain and/or rope from piling up. Using the rudder by means of the wheel, and the engine by means of the throttle, steer the boat and lay out the cable along the sea bed . To make sure that you don't drag your anchor after anchoring, it is essential to check your position periodically. To do this take compass bearings, using transits if possible and if you have radar check ranges from the shore. If the reference points and ranges you take stay the same, then you are not dragging your anchor. Establish anchor watch during your stay at the anchorage to make sure you're not drifting.

Pulling Up The Sea Anchor and Finding Treasures at Sea (DJs Dives)
This week we pull the sea anchor back up to the boat in hopes for enough winds to get back to sailing rather than bobbing around the Pacific Ocean. Once the sea anchor comes back up everybody takes turns at the helm and we try out different sailing configurations to try and increase our speed with light winds. After days of only seeing blue water and blue skies we spot something in the distance that looks like it might be a raft of some sort. Out of curiosity we deviate from our course a little bit in order to get a closer look. Since we don't have tv or internet on board it's quite exciting to guess what the floating item could be as we get closer and closer and eventually catch and bring the mystery treasure on board! NIGHTMARE AT SEA!!! (everything goes wrong) Ep. 119
Drifting out to sea, in 40 knots of wind, attached to another vessel by anchor chain. We had to be rescued by the coast guard that turned out to be an extremely old fishing boat. The Meltemi wind was blowing a steady 35 - 40 knots all day, we were safely anchored in a sheltered bay UNTIL... another boat anchored on top of our anchor and off we went, attached to one another, just avoiding running into a super yacht in the anchorage and then out to sea. The video is pretty self explanatory. I'm going to save my energy in writing a huge description to go a grab a well earned beer. What a day. The worst day of my whole life. Made in 1948, this educational film discusses the work of ocean freighters in the era before container ships. The featured vessel is the SS Anchor Hitch, which in addition to a cargo hold had 12 passenger staterooms aboard. The film shows the Anchor Hitch operating in the Pacific, on the way to South America. Many of the activities of the crew are seen including navigation, engine operation, radio contact, etc. At 2:50, the ship's radio antenna and directional radio system is shown being operated by a crew member. At 3:40, radar is shown in operation. At 11:50, a lighthouse is seen guarding the entrance to a harbor. Not much is known about the SS Anchor Hitch but it was apparently built by the United States Maritime Commission and considered a C1-M-AV1 type, designed for short coastal runs. This class including 65 ships designated Alamosa class for Navy "island hopping" in the Pacific. The C1 types were the smallest of the 3 original types designed by the United States Maritime Commission and were intended to be used on routes that did not call for fast ships. 173 were built between 1940 and 1945. Both the C1-A and C1-B were built with either steam geared turbine or diesel motors. Lost at sea: Ecological assessment around a sunken shipping container
Thousands of shipping containers are lost from cargo vessels each year. Many of these containers eventually sink to the deep seafloor. In 2004, researchers at the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI) discovered a lost shipping container almost 1,300 meters (4,200 feet) below the surface of the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary. In the first ever survey of its kind, researchers from MBARI and the Sanctuary recently described how deep-sea animal communities on and around the container differed from those in surrounding areas. The red dots seen in some of the underwater footage are lasers mounted on the remotely operated submersible. The lasers are 29 cm apart and allow the scientists to estimate animal size. Video editor: Kyra Schlining Script and narration: Josi Taylor Production support: James Barry, Kim Fulton-Bennett, Linda Kuhnz, Lonny Lundsten, Nancy Jacobsen Stout, Susan vonThun For more information visit: MBARI press release: http://www.mbari.org/news/news_releases/2014/container-animals/container-animals-release.html Original publication: Taylor, J.R., DeVogelaere, A.P., Burton, E.J., Frey, O., Lundsten, L., Kuhnz, L.A., Whaling, P.J., Lovera, C., Buck, K.R., Barry J.P. Tides and Sea live at Ship and Anchor
Kristin Grace performing Tides and Sea live at the Ship and Anchor Pepsi youth songwriting competition finals 2019 In 1992, the cod fisheries in Newfoundland closed down and it became illegal to fish for cod. This left over 30,000 men unemployed. Many lost everything; but many also, kept their heads high and came to Alberta, which was the land of opportunity. This is based on a true story told by Rex Murphy. "https://www.youtube.com/embed/kVyZuUyAASI?start=336" I know where I’m going, and I know where I’m from, So please don’t try to tell me in the west I won’t belong The life that I once knew here, is gone in a single day Though every part of me wants to, I know cannot stay Though I wish I could stay here at home I’ll make it if I have to on my own No, you have not seen the end of me I’ll take every opportunity And you cannot take my dignity There’s more to me, then tides and sea The air is dry here, no ocean to be seen Coal mines and basement apartments ain’t quite the fisherman’s dream Its been fire away from the water, but I know I’ll see it through They say the rigs make a living so that’s just what I’ll do Though my soul misses my home I keep my head high and my heart strong No, you have not seen the end of me I’ll take any opportunity And you cannot take my dignity There’s more to me, then tides and sea The hat still looks funny and the boots don’t fit right But the people here won’t stop me from a good fair fight I did this for our seven kids, I did this for you And now we’re here together, I find joy in making do Though at first, I didn’t quite belong Now that you’re here, I’m starting to feel at home And you’ll never see the end of me I’ll take any opportunity No, you’ll never take my dignity There’s more to me then tides and sea So, I made a life away from the sea I’ll never ask for easy, possible is enough When the life that you know leaves you, you gotta learn to be tough And though I miss the ocean, I’ve learned to love the sky I look into the open, and the prairie’s just as wide Though my heart will always be at home I finally feel that I belong No, you’ll never see the end of me And I’ll take every opportunity And I’ll never lose my dignity There’s more to me then tides and sea, though my heart is tied to the sea I’ve made a life away from the sea.

Our NEW album 'Everything All at Once' is out NOW!!! http://www.seainthesky.bandcamp.com http://www.facebook.com/theseathesky Twitter: @TheSeaTheSky Instagram: @SeaInTheSkyMusic LYRICS: Lie awake and wonder why. I’m not afraid to say i’m terrified Of when the lights should go out And they’re flickering, flickering. Stagger forward, stumble blind. Do they see at all in the same hues we do? What lies in the corners of The back of our skulls, we’re imagining the worst And why leave the mattress when When under the covers we’re safe From every silhouette we see Spinning the reel, fallin’ apart Play it all back, back again. If you believe, I believe, too. Infinite expanding dark, feel the ground right where we stand. If you believe, I believe, too. Lie awake and wonder why. I’m not afraid to say i’m terrified Of when the lights should go out And they’re flickering, flickering. Stagger forward, stumble blind. Do they see at all in the same hues we do? You’re forcing your eyes closed shut Pray to the flashlight for a means to an end Creep through the hallway floor Press your hands to the wall to find A switch to cure the blind anxiety Anchored to your bed. They hold you down, you’re screaming out, but You’ll be fine. Pressure on your chest. They're holding you down, you're screaming out, but You'll be fine Lie to yourself, say you’ve done this before and Take up the courage you’ve kept in the floorboards.

Sailing Vessel Triteia - Dragging Anchor, Getting Oil and Exploring Sea Caves at Cueva Valdez
| Season 2 | Episode 20 | This episode finds us at Cueva Valdez Anchorage where after dragging anchor in the night and having trouble getting my engine started to reset the hook I made my way over to the lobster boat Miss Mae and was greeted with a warm welcome and some life saving motor oil! After which I explored the sea caves ashore and prepared to head out to my next anchorage. The last week of 2017 I took an amazing solo sailing trip to the Channel Islands. I visit six anchorages on Santa Cruz Island before sailing for Catalina Island and tying up in Isthmus Cove for New Years Eve. We sailed back on New Years Day enjoying sunshine, great wind and thousands of dolphins. While I was on my trip I started my first podcast and the first episode is up online now. The podcast is titled “A STERN VIEW” and is something of a cruising guide to anchorages and sailing destinations. Each episode is recorded on location and I cover everything I know about the anchorage from my research and experience at the anchorage. I also kept a journal in my logbook and will be posting them as a blog with still photos. This will act as support to the A STERN VIEW podcast as will each new video episode that features the anchorage covered in the podcast episodes. The journal and Podcast can be seen and heard here: http://svtriteia.com If you like the podcast please subscribe to it on iTunes and rate / review it as it helps in the ratings! Please reach "A Stern View" in iTunes! I have started a new short video series titled Sea Stories that are only available for my Patrons. If you would like to contribute you can do so here https://www.patreon.com/sailorjames Also if you like this video please give it a thumbs up! It helps me get more viewers! Thanks to all of you for watching and being so supportive with your comments and likes! It makes me really happy to know you like the videos and to hear your feedback. Fair Winds, Sailor James
