River Thames Cruise - London
One of the most pleasant and relaxing ways to travel in London is by cruise boat on the River Thames. Boats take travelers to the Tower of London and on to Greenwich while all along the river the boat captain points out interesting sights and shares some of the history of this great city. Taking a cruise on the Thames is a nice break from the often frantic pace of touring and a lovely way to see the great city.

A Boat trip up the River Thames/Isis at Oxford 2016
We travel through the city past famous landmarks including Christchurch College and Meadows, the University boathouses and regatta course, the Head of the River and Folly Bridge . From the river we take in a side of Oxford's heritage rarely seen by visitors to the city. Quaint Osney Island, well-loved allotments and gardens and majestic and ancient Port Meadow are off the tourist trail but represent some of Oxford's most beautiful and intriguing scenery. Port Meadow, a vast area of common land, has remained little changed since prehistoric times and supports plants and bird-life in abundance. At the top of Port Meadow is Godstow. Godstow was the ultimate destination of Alice Liddell and Lewis Carroll when they followed an identical route to our trip while composing 'Alice's Adventures in Wonderland'. It is also the site of Trout Island, an inspiration for another of Oxfords literary icons, C S Lewis, and his stories of the land of Narnia.

144. The tidal River Thames by narrowboat - Limehouse to Teddington
At the start of September 2018 I joined Jo and Michael of "Minimal List" (see channel link below) as well as London Boat Girl, Lorna, and we went on a rather exciting and interesting voyage up the tidal river Thames from Limehouse lock to Teddington. Narrowboats are not at all designed for any swirly waters so the choppiness of the tidal Thames around Limehouse, London Bridge and the Houses of Parliament makes for an interesting - and wobbly - experience which requires confidence and a steely hand on the tiller, all of which Michael has in spades. See Jo & Michael's version of the day at: https://youtu.be/QCpYhCUgHrE Lorna's version is at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_QuDEJJJwew Start point: https://goo.gl/maps/ixRBLvFHKum End point: https://goo.gl/maps/r4WBgBxhxJB2 Got a question? Anglotopia Slow TV: Thames River Cruise To Greenwich - Full Journey
There's a new trend in YouTube videos called Slow TV, where a camera is setup that records a long journey. There's a popular video going around of a 9 hour train ride in Norway. Going through our archives, I remembered I recorded our the entire journey of a boat ride down the Thames from Westminster Pier to Greenwich. You can hear the hilarious commentary over the loudspeakers. If you're easily seasick, this video might not be for you. You can also hear Anglotopia Jr jabbering occasionally in the background but I tried my best to keep him quiet. We placed the camera in what we thought would be the best place, but unfortunately, didn't realize the commentary would switch between both sides of the river so much. So, it feels like there's something missing. Next time, we'll take two cameras. We'll record more videos like this on our next trip. Sit back, put this video on full screen and take a cruise to Greenwich.

River Thames boat cruise ( excerpts ). London
http://www.riverthames.co.uk The River Thames is a river that flows through southern England. It is the longest river entirely in England and the 2nd longest in the United Kingdom, after the River Severn. While it is best known for flowing through London, the river also flows alongside other towns and cities, including Oxford, Reading, Henley-on-Thames, and Windsor. Passing through London, the river is deep and navigable to ships; the Thames drains the whole of Greater London. Its tidal section, reaching up to Teddington Lock, includes most of its London stretch and has a rise and fall of 7 metres (23 ft). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/River_Thames The marks of human activity, in some cases dating back to Pre-Roman Britain, are visible at various points along the river. These include a variety of structures connected with use of the river, such as navigations, bridges, and watermills, as well as prehistoric burial mounds. A major maritime route is formed for much of its length for shipping and supplies: through the Port of London for international trade, internally along its length and by its connection to the British canal system. The river's position has put it at the centre of many events in British history, leading to it being described by John Burns as "liquid history". Etymology: The Thames, from Middle English Temese, is derived from the Celtic name for the river, Tamesas (from *tamēssa), recorded in Latin as Tamesis and yielding modern Welsh Tafwys "Thames". The name probably meant "dark" and can be compared to other cognates such as Russian темно (Proto-Slavic *tьmьnъ), Sanskrit tamas, Irish teimheal and Welsh tywyll "darkness" (Proto-Celtic *temeslos) and Middle Irish teimen "dark grey", though Richard Coates mentions other theories: Kenneth Jackson's that it is non Indo-European (and of unknown meaning), and Peter Kitson's that it is Indo-European but pre-Celtic and has a name indicating "muddiness" from a root *tā-, 'melt'. http://www.visitthames.co.uk http://www.visitlondon.com/discover-london/london-areas/thames-river-and-waterways The Thames flows through Central London and provides a stunning backdrop to many of the city's top tourist attractions. The 2,000-year-old river harbours much of London's history, as well as providing ongoing inspiration for artists, musicians and writers. There's also a host of sporting and leisure activities you can do on and around London's waterways. The Thames is a tidal river, rising and falling as much as 8m (26ft) between high and low tides. Although it was once the source of London's "Great Stink" (1858), today the Thames is one of the cleanest rivers in Europe, thanks to successful campaigns by groups such as Thames21. River Thames Services River bus services are popular with visitors and commuters alike, and are a great way of beating the traffic and enjoying fantastic views. There are also river tours and cruises that feature sightseeing and commentary, dancing, music and fine dining. Schedules vary according to season. Oyster and Travelcard holders can get discounts on many routes and hop-on, hop-off tickets may be available. http://www.tfl.gov.uk/modes/river/the-river-experience http://resources.woodlands-junior.kent.sch.uk/riverthames/facts.htm http://riverconditions.environment-agency.gov.uk ..........................
