Carthage, The lost empire | Abdelaziz Belkhodja | TEDxJendoubaVille

25:08
Redefining the History of our region. How we were the first to build a great civilisation and how we can learn from historical mistakes to rebuild a better community and a better country as a whole. Abdelaziz Belkhodja is a Tunisian writer. He obtained in 1987 a master degree in public law and started a DEA of political studies before returning to Tunis. He wrote several articles and then his novel, "the Ashes of Carthage", in 1993, followed in 1999 by a second, "The Stars of Wrath" and, in 2003, a third, "The Return of the Elephant". The narrative art of Abdelaziz Belkhodja uses different types of stories that fascinates the reader. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx

Carthage | Exploring Tunisia!!

09:25
Taking a trip back in time! Come with me as we visit Carthage! An important slice of history located right here in Tunisia! Here is a list of the sites we visited: The Acropolium: The Acropolium, also known as Saint Louis Cathedral is an old Roman Catholic cathedral located in Carthage, Tunisia. Situated on the peak of Byrsa Hill and near the ruins of the ancient Punic and then Roman city, the cathedral was built atop the ruins of an old temple dedicated to Eshmun, the Punic god of healing. The edifice can still be accessed from the basement. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Acropolium_of_Carthage Roman Theatre of Carthage The Roman Theatre of Carthage is a restored ancient Roman theatre complex in Tunis which is now used to host a range of events. Originally built during the time of Roman control of Carthage, the theatre is believed to have been destroyed during the Vandal invasions of the 5th century AD. https://www.historvius.com/carthage-roman-theatre-and-odeon-1611/ The Antonine Baths The Antonine Baths was a huge Roman bath complex in ancient Carthage, the well-preserved ruins of which can still be viewed today. Originally built from 145 to 165 AD, mostly during the reign of the Roman Emperor Antoninus Pius, the Antonine Baths were among the largest baths to be built in the Roman world and were the largest such complex in North Africa. https://www.historvius.com/the-antonine-baths-1616/ Port Punic The Carthage Punic Port and Punic Port Museum can be found in the area of the ancient Carthaginian harbour near modern day Tunis. This ancient superpower built its reputation on its mastery of the seas and the ancient Port of Carthage would have once help over two hundred of the most powerful warships of the time. https://www.historvius.com/carthage-punic-port-and-museum-1618/ ________________________________________________________ Follow me! - Facbook - https://www.facebook.com/yofootexplores - Subscribe - https://www.youtube.com/c/yofootexplores - Instagram! - @yohanpartap - Tumblr - yofoot.tumblr.com ________________________________________________________ Music: Good For You by THBD https://soundcloud.com/thbdsultan Creative Commons — Attribution 3.0 Unported— CC BY 3.0 http://creativecommons.org/licenses/b... Carthage Travel

02:33
Carthage Travel - A city of the Pheonician and Punic periods from the C6th BC it was the base of a powerful trading empire spanning the entire south Mediterranean and home to a population of the order of half a million people. Its most famous general was Hannibal who crossed the Alps to battle with the Romans. Hannibal suffered his first significant defeat at the Battle of Zama in 202 BC, which ended the 2nd Punic War. After over 50 years of being watched closely by Rome, they were eventually attacked in the 3rd Punic War. The citizens defended the city against the Republic of Rome in 146BC yet lost, and Punic Carthage was completely destroyed by the order of the Senate. The site was redeveloped by the Romans a century later and Carthage became the capital of the Roman province of Africa. A UNESCO World Heritage List site. The Byrsa Hill at the rear of the area dominates both the ocean gulf and the lake and plain of Tunis inland to the west, and is therefore the most strategic point. Today the district is very affluent, with elite schools, wealthy residents, relatively numerous police, a large number of archaeological sites and museums and the President's own seaside residence. Enjoy Your Carthage Travel!

Last Excursion of the Carthage, Knightstown & Shirley Railroad

01:19
I drove all the way from Kokomo to see this small scenic railroad for the first and, unfortunately, last time. Today, August 31, 2013, was the last day a train on the CKSR would travel these rails. The museum wasn't making sufficient money to keep up with maintenance. I thought it was worth it to travel 68 miles, especially when I found out my friend's P3 was on it. I was there for maybe 15 minutes at most, but I still had fun and got to witness a sad, yet interesting event. I'm glad I made that trip and I feel honored to have seen this last excursion. But I'll bet Chris is even more honored knowing his P3 was the last train horn to be heard in Knightstown. Engines include: CKSI 468 (45-ton)

One of the most popular J-Term study tours at Carthage is the annual J-Term trip to Nicaragua (Tropical Medicine, History and Ecology of Nicaragua). Every January, between 20 and 40 students travel to the island of Ometepe, Nicaragua, where they spend two weeks studying tropical ecology, visiting historical sites around the island and country, and volunteering in rural medical clinics. The trip is described as life-changing by students who have taken it. Mary Beard's Ultimate Rome: Empire Without Limit (ep. 1)

58:43
Primer episodio de una miniserie documental de la BBC, con subtítulso en inglés. Sinopsis: In this first episode, Mary Beard reaches back to the myths and legends of the origins of Rome to gain an insight into the deep-rooted psyche of the people of Rome - a city born through fratricide and rape. But from the very beginning, Rome was also an asylum for outcasts and exiles and because of this, it adopted a uniquely inclusive approach towards its neighbours and defeated enemies. The expansion of the city brought territory in first in Italy and Sicily, where Rome first came head to head and eventually defeated her great rival, Carthage. Mary then travels to Greece, where Rome adopted a complex mix of brute force and cultural cringe, and France, where she finds evidence of war methods akin to outright genocide. In typical myth-busting style, Mary argues that the period of greatest Roman expansion occurred when Rome itself was little more than a provincial backwater, a shantytown of mud and brick. The marble, monumental Rome we know came about because of imperial conquest - not the other way round. And likewise, the creation and possession of an empire transformed the politics of Rome forever, creating the conditions for one-man rule, and ending the centuries-old Roman Republic.
