The Foodthief is a shortfim project that is currently under development by Mindbender Animation Studio. We made it a goal for ourselves to create a more flexible 3D rigg than anything we had done before. The solution became a rig with sliding body parts that could be turned on or of between the different poses. The rig was created with the help of the brilliant minds at Kippcase rigging studio.

In this video I cover the basics of throwing a baseball, including switching from IK to FK on the arms, adding a parent constraint to control the ball, and making sure that the animation has strong poses to insure that the action is clear. Referencing is much like loading in a texture file into maya, I just holds the path to that file so if any changes happen, maya doesn't care as all it does is load the file with that name in that path. For example, if i created a shader and hooked in a texture file, then if i edited that texture but still kept it in the same folder with the same name and file extension maya wont have a problem and will just look in that folder and load the texture no matter how you have edited that image. The same if for referencing except we are referencing rig files (or other files if you want like the set mesh). This means maya doesn't care what's in that file, it just loads it up even if you have updated that rig. What this mean is that with a reference file we can start animating, and the scene where animating in will only contain key frame data. So because it loads in the reg much like a texture, the scene file doesn't actually contain any of the rig or mesh so when you save it only saves the key frames (and any stuff you do make in that scene file like normal). So for example saving a scene that has a shader in it with a texture assigned, the scene doesn't contain that texture it just loads it in, so the file size of that scene will be small as it doesn't actually contain any of the texture information just a file path to load it. This is an important animation tool as when you start animating it is still possible to edit the rig file, then re-open your animation file and maya will just look at the file path and load in your new rig. And as long as you didn't rename any of the control curves (objects that get the animation on them) maya wont care in the slightest to what edits you did to that rig, all it will so is take you animation and applies it to the objects name it was assigned to. This also means if you did some animation but decided you wanted it on a different character rig, all you need to do is rename the file path to your new rig (much like just changing the path to a different texture) and provided the control curves are named the same the animation will be applied instantly with no hassle. In this quite amusing utorial I transfer a mocap file of a person who jumps around happily to an obese man. The mocap file comes from www.turbosquid.com and is free. The obese man is a default character in Maya's Content Browser. He has no skeleton inside, so we Quick Rig one, before actually transfering the motion of the jumping character to our obese man. A week ago Arnold 5.1 came out, with aiToon as a new shader. I use this shader for rendering at the end of the video. Maya has had a toon shader built in for many years. See a provious tutorial I did: https://youtu.be/i8xnqOVLpy4 The music: I composed that piece a while ago and named it "dubius 170".

We made the global control quite early but we haven't done much with it yet so now its time to connect it up and check everything is working ok. By using the character node everything should be in the correct place so that when we hook up the global control everything will work smoothly. NOTE: The stretchy limbs wont work with the global scale just yet but we will hook that up in a later tutorial. If you can remember, in a earlier tutorial while making the stretchy arms we made a global scale multiply/divide node which is what we will use later to get the stretch working with the global scale. This tutorial series covers creating joints inside the mesh, skinning, creating animation controls and organizing your scene. Rigging is a complex and difficult process. You may not get it right the first time but keep at it and try things again after a break and eventually you'll have a fully working character to animate!

Maya 2019 provides us with lots of IK animated characters. That is: skeletons carrying motion capture data of real people. In addition, Maya now has more rigged characters such as four from the Cologne based mocap company renderpeople.com. In this tutorial I use both, the IK mocap data and the renderpeople characters. The music, as always: "Computer Animation" and "dubius 170", composed for this channel, licensed via GEMA.

Maya Rigged Character from Squiggly Rigs Here’s how you can have an incredible experience animating with Autodesk Maya without being overwhelmed by these monstrously heavy and slow Rigs out there… We’ve been talking to animators all over the world, professional animators who work in animation studios and animation students who study in both online and physical animation schools and what we’ve discovered was very interesting. We asked them the following two questions: What are the most important aspects that you look for when you start using a new rig? What makes a good rig? They all told us pretty much the same thing: - It must be appealing - It must be easy to use - It must be lightweight To be honest, it was not a surprise to us at all. We are invested in 3D animation for more than 10 years and we’ve seen it all and tested many Maya rigs ourselves. There’s a lot of Maya Rigged Characters around that you can put your hands on, some are pretty good and fun to animate, however, there are not many that answer these three parameters of being appealing, easy to use and lightweight. While many rigs we’ve tried were quite appealing, they turned out to be heavy and complicated and others that were so-called easy to use were lacking in appeal. Almost none had all three values in them. We’ve decided that we must do something about it, so we sat down and created a plan of action: We will create rigs that will aim to answer these three values. First, we created “Grey matter Gary”, which is a rig that we give away for free, Gary is a cartoony character rig that is really appealing, simple structured and highly flexible. To be able to achieve what we planned, we used a rigging system that allowed us to create a super reliable, flexible and high performing Maya rig. You can download “Grey Matter Gary” rig here: https://www.squigglyrigs.com/grey-matter-gary/ We were very surprised to find out the reactions to Gary, since its release, we’ve been getting many positive feedbacks about him, and most of the animators who used him were surprised of how fun he is to work with. Here are some of the feedbacks we got for Gary’s rig: “ Very easy and intuitive to use. The bendings are very nice, and simple. I had great fun animating this rig, I strongly recommend it to anyone who wants to practice cartoony style animation.” “ Incredibly flexible and fun rig! Recommended for all the cartoonists out there” “ Seriously, this rig rocks! It’s super expressive and easy to use… and has so many features that usually only exist in paid rigs.” “ I’ve been having an absolute blast with the rig! Downloaded it last week and after a few sittings I can definitely say it’s a good one. Really intuitive, super fun to animate and push, pull, squash, stretch and smear the hell out of.” Lee - female girl Character Rig Lee Maya Rig Our second rig is Lee, a hyperactive teenager with a great sense of rhythm. What we were trying to accomplish with Lee is to give her a simple and graphic style of design to make her highly flexible and expressive without losing her appeal. Lee will for sure make you smile while she moves and do her thing. Check her out here: https://www.squigglyrigs.com/product/lee/ And finally, our most current rig is Goosh, a type of a big friendly giant dude that you’d rather have on your side. But don’t be misled by his gentleness, when he lets his ridiculously massive arms do the talking he can be very persuasive. You can check Goosh Maya Rig at: https://www.squigglyrigs.com/product/goosh-maya-rig/ So, if you want to have a go with an appealing, easy to use and lightweight Maya Rigged Character while animating your projects, you should check out our rigs. We are planning on releasing many more Maya Rigged Characters in the near future, and if you want to get updated about our new releases don’t forget to like our page and subscribe to our mailing list

This tutorial features Mrs. CtrlAultDel (Ellen) aka Ellen Awesome. Since I am more a 3ds Max user, she is now going to help you all learn Maya. Ellen is an animation instructor and is in this video she demonstrates the proper way to set up a rig for creating wings for your 3D characters. Ellen is also a plush toy designer. When she is not teaching, or doing her own 3D animations she is creating handmade plush toys. She creates plushies based off of Doctor Who, Marvel, DC and other popular nerdy things. This is my first character rig in Maya. Its pretty rough, but I'm happy with what I've learned so far. Its all set up in the basic/ standard way. The legs & feet came first, then the spine. The arms were probably the most difficult, but in terms of learning were great. When I next do legs etc, I'm likely to do it like I've done the arms (with nurbs curve controllers etc). Next I'll be trying to make the skin/ model move more naturally with the movement of the bones.

Here’s a quick demo on how 2D characters can be animated in Maya. In the last video I showed a few techniques on modeling hand drawn characters, and in this video I’ll show an approach to animating this type of rig. Please leave any question or suggestions and stay tooned for more videos. Animation is life, I live for animation. #Animation
