Floating in the Dead Sea ...You Can't Sink!

03:04
The Dead Sea (Hebrew: יָם הַמֶּלַח, Yam ha-Melah, "Sea of Salt", also Hebrew: יָם הַמָּוֶת, Yam ha-Mavet, "The Sea of Death", and Arabic: البحر الميت‎‎ About this sound Al-Bahr al-Mayyit (help·info)), also called the Salt Sea, is a salt lake bordered by Jordan to the east and Israel and Palestine to the west. Its surface and shores are 429 metres (1,407 ft) below sea level, Earth's lowest elevation on land. The Dead Sea is 304 m (997 ft) deep, the deepest hypersaline lake in the world. With 34.2% salinity (in 2011), it is 9.6 times as salty as the ocean, and one of the world's saltiest bodies of water. This salinity makes for a harsh environment in which plants and animals cannot flourish, hence its name. The Dead Sea is 50 kilometers (31 mi) long and 15 kilometers (9 mi) wide at its widest point. It lies in the Jordan Rift Valley and its main tributary is the Jordan River. The Dead Sea water has a density of 1.24 kg/liter, which makes swimming similar to floating. Biblical period- Dwelling in caves near the Dead Sea is recorded in the Hebrew Bible as having taken place before the Israelites came to Canaan, and extensively at the time of King David. Just northwest of the Dead Sea is Jericho. Somewhere, perhaps on the southeastern shore, would be the cities mentioned in the Book of Genesis which were said to have been destroyed in the time of Abraham: Sodom and Gomorra (Genesis 18) and the three other "Cities of the Plain", Admah, Zeboim and Zoar (Deuteronomy 29:23). Zoar escaped destruction when Abraham's nephew Lot escaped to Zoar from Sodom (Genesis 19:21-22). Before the destruction, the Dead Sea was a valley full of natural tar pits, which was called the vale of Siddim. King David was said to have hidden from Saul at Ein Gedi nearby. In Ezekiel 47:8-9 there is a specific prophecy that the sea will ".. be healed and made fresh", becoming a normal lake capable of supporting marine life. A similar prophecy is stated in Zechariah 14:8, which says that "Living waters will go out from Jerusalem, half of them to the eastern sea (likely the Dead Sea) and half to the western sea (the Mediterranean)..." Greek and Roman period- Aristotle wrote about the remarkable waters. The Nabateans and others discovered the value of the globs of natural asphalt that constantly floated to the surface where they could be harvested with nets. The Egyptians were steady customers, as they used asphalt in the embalming process that created mummies. The Ancient Romans knew the Dead Sea as "Palus Asphaltites" (Asphalt Lake). King Herod the Great built or rebuilt several fortresses and palaces on the western bank of the Dead Sea. The most famous was Masada, where in 70 CE a small group of Jewish zealots fled after the fall of the destruction of the Second Temple. The zealots survived until 73 CE, when a siege by the X Legion ended in the deaths by suicide of its 960 inhabitants. Another historically important fortress was Machaerus (מכוור), on the eastern bank, where, according to Josephus, John the Baptist was imprisoned by Herod Antipas and died. Also in Roman times, some Essenes settled on the Dead Sea's western shore; Pliny the Elder identifies their location with the words, "on the west side of the Dead Sea, away from the coast ... [above] the town of Engeda" (Natural History, Bk 5.73); and it is therefore a hugely popular but contested hypothesis today, that same Essenes are identical with the settlers at Qumran and that "the Dead Sea Scrolls" discovered during the 20th century in the nearby caves had been their own library. Josephus identified the Dead Sea in geographic proximity to the ancient Biblical city of Sodom. However, he referred to the lake by its Greek name, Asphaltites. Various sects of Jews settled in caves overlooking the Dead Sea. The best known of these are the Essenes of Qumran, who left an extensive library known as the Dead Sea Scrolls. The town of Ein Gedi, mentioned many times in the Mishna, produced persimmon for the temple's fragrance and for export, using a secret recipe. "Sodomite salt" was an essential mineral for the temple's holy incense, but was said to be dangerous for home use and could cause blindness. The Roman camps surrounding Masada were built by Jewish slaves receiving water from the towns around the lake. These towns had drinking water from the Ein Feshcha springs and other sweetwater springs in the vicinity. Byzantine period- Intimately connected with the Judean wilderness to its northwest and west, the Dead Sea was a place of escape and refuge. The remoteness of the region attracted Greek Orthodox monks since the Byzantine era. Their monasteries, such as Saint George in Wadi Kelt and Mar Saba in the Judean Desert, are places of pilgrimage.

8 GREAT TIPS FOR SURVIVAL AT SEA

06:11
Most of us adore beach resorts and go to one of the large saltwater bodies at least once a year. However, we shouldn’t forget that the sea is as attractive as it is wayward. We at Bright Side wondered how a person who happened to be in the open sea should behave. It turns out there are several rules that aren’t at all difficult to remember. Despair is your most dangerous enemy. Don’t give up hope of being saved. There are many stories of people who were found in the open sea months after their disappearance. For instance, 25-year-old sailor Poon Lim, who worked on a British merchant ship, survived alone 133 days in the open sea. After a shipwreck, he managed to find a raft with fresh water, cookies, flares, and a flashlight. Every day, Lim ate only 2 cookies and made 3 sips of water. To avoid muscle atrophy, he even floated around the raft twice a day. As you can see, human possibilities are endless. The main thing is to keep calm and hope for the best. TIMESTAMPS Calm down 0:35 Choose the right swimming style 0:57 Find something that floats 1:37 Take care of clothes 1:55 Decide what you’ll eat 2:16 Provide yourself with liquid 3:01 Save yourself properly 4:02 Don’t lose hope 5:06 SUMMARY: - Panic definitely won’t help you. It can cloud your judgment and make you lose the rhythm of breathing. Therefore, the first thing you should do is to calm down. - The style of swimming you choose determines how long your strength will last. In calm water, it’s better to swim on your back. If waves splash around you, it’s better to swim on your belly. - If you’re in the open sea as a result of a shipwreck or an airplane water landing, there must be plenty of things around you that perfectly keep afloat. It will be even better if it’s a boat or a raft with which ships are equipped. - Remember that open sunlight can be extremely dangerous. So don’t remove your clothes — they’ll protect you from the sun. - If you have rations, divide them into small daily portions. This will make them last for a long time, and you won’t have problems with digestion. - Try to fish even if you have stores of food. After all, fish contain some liquid. - You have to consume the liquid constantly but never drink seawater. - Try to ensure that you always have a couple of empty containers left for collecting rainwater. According to studies, drinking untreated rainwater is safe for your health. - • If you found fluorescein, dissolve it in the water when you see an airplane or ship. It forms a bright spot around you which can be easily seen from the air and from afar. Can we drink Seawater?

02:15
Is it a good idea to drink sea water if you're stranded on a desert coastline and facing dehydration? Find the answer in this video! The answer is based on the concept of Osmosis in which the molecules of a solvent tend to pass through a semi permeable membrane from a less concentrated solution into a more concentrated one. ► Production Team Creator - Omkar Bhagat http://fb.com/omkarbhagat Narration - Haley Anne Chamberlain Nelson http://youtube.com/untamedscience ► Website and Social Links Twitter - http://twitter.com/thecuriousenggr Facebook - http://fb.com/thecuriousengineer Google+ - http://gplus.to/omkar4 Website - http://thecuriousengineer.org ► Attribution and Credits | Copyright Stuff Brightly Fancy Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com) http://incompetech.com/music/royalty-free/index.html?isrc=USUAN1200071 Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 3.0 http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/

Parody - Drinking Sea Water | Jason Asselin

02:44
An attempt at comedy, a parody if you will.. I hope you enjoy! In this video, Jason gets a jug of Gulf Water and sits in his tent drinking it. He was trying to get the word out that the Warm Gulf Water was safe as B.P. and our Federal Government says it was. As you can see in the video, he believes the water was oil and Corexit free. When Big Oil Companies and any Government get together with a plan, they know what to say... If they say the water is safe, then it MUST be safe..

UAE to desalinate deep ocean water

05:25
Of the 22 Arab League nations including the UAE, eight have the lowest water availability per capita in the world though the UAE is one of the highest water consuming countries. An average UAE resident uses 550 litres of water against the international average of 170-300 litres of water per day. In UAE, water is made available for consumption through desalination. Desalination of water produces its own carbon footprint. Without desalination there would not be enough drinking water in the UAE.Large quantities of fossil fuel are used in the production of desalinated water and this causes the release of various forms of carbon compounds to the air, thus contributing to the global warming effect. The UAE cannot depend on rains which are very low, highly unpredictable and erratic. The effectiveness of cloud seeding is debatable as there is still no convincing scientific proof of the efficacy of intentional weather modification as it only has 30 per cent or less chance of success. It is expected that the demand for water in Abu Dhabi will increase for up to about 5,000 million litres by 2030. The Environment Agency and Abu Dhabi Water and Electricity Authority is planning to inject desalinated water into strategic underground reserves. Storage of water in these existing aquifers will ensure adequate reserves of potable water in times of peak demand or as a backup system in case of emergency. The impact of desalination plants on sensitive Gulf shorelines in Dubai is ever present as desalination facilities pump heated brine water back into the environment after cooling down plant facilities, he said. From desalination, the brine goes back into the sea. There is an impact and there is need to use water rationally to avoid damaging the environment. In a region that’s already stressed the Gulf waters from brine discharge of current desalination plants, looking further offshore could offer a solution. Since the UAE is part of a highly water stressed region as the Gulf states do not have any rivers, rainfall is minimal, and what groundwater is left has largely run out. All of which makes desalination the only viable option to supply the country with stable and sustainable access to long-term fresh water, while at the same time coping with a population that is continuing to grow and is about to cross 9 million. Sourcing converted deep ocean water from outside the Gulf would be of great benefit to the littoral states of the Arabian Gulf because it would both help preserve increasingly scarce groundwater resources, as well as stop the sea from disintegrating into a polluted and grossly over-saline maritime desert. This alternative delivery of good quality drinking water converted from deep ocean water is something the UAE has been looking into for some time, based on what has been achieved in Japan, Hawaii and Taiwan.”

How to make an Isotonic drink with seawater

01:52
Isotonic drinks are intended to provide energy to the body but the intention of using sea water is for Cellular Nourishment. Seawater contains almost all the elements of the periodic table. "In 1904, the biologist René Quinton published his definitive work that firmly and scientifically established the therapeutic virtues of sea water, also called 'Marine Plasma' or 'Ocean Plasma'." (Oceanplasma.org) You can read more about the benefits of Seawater and how to use it in books from Dr. Angel Gracia

MAHALO HAWAII DEEP SEA WATER PART 2 OF 2

06:16
www.hawaiideepseawater.com MaHaLo Hawaii Deep Sea® Water has all the natural building blocks of life gleaned from ancient glaciers and the mineral-rich channels of the sea. Koyo USA has created new technology to gently filter out the excess sea salt, while maintaining the essential minerals to produce this pure and exhilarating drinking water. The Deep Sea Water used for MaHaLo bottled drinking water is very old. It takes between 1,200 and 2,000 years for the water to travel from the North Atlantic Ocean through the freezing Arctic currents, under the vast glaciers of Greenland, where it gathers ancient minerals that leach down from the ice. Then it flows around and back down toward the deep channels of the Pacific Ocean. It is there, at the Water Rejuvenation Zone just off the coast of Kona, Hawaii, that the water is at its very purest. This is why Koyo USA placed its processing and bottling plants on the island of Hawaii. MaHaLo Hawaii Deep Sea® Water is drawn from 3,000 feet below the surface of the Pacific Ocean. At this depth the water is very cold, about 43° F (6°C), and is safe from surface pollutants caused by industry, farming, chemicals or human waste. This water is pumped to Koyo USAs ultra modern processing facility from over 3,000 feet below the oceans surface. Koyo USA Corp. pumps, filters and bottles MaHaLo Hawaii Deep Sea® Water at the source to ensure the highest quality in each and every bottle. What Happens When You Drink Too Much Water

03:05
We couldn't live without water. But if we drink too much, it can wreak havoc on our brain and body. Drinking more water than your kidneys can process can throw your blood sodium levels out of balance. That's called water intoxication. And in extreme cases, it can cause brain damage, comas, and even death. ------------------------------------------------------ Science Insider tells you all you need to know about science: space, medicine, biotech, physiology, and more. Subscribe to our channel and visit us at: http://www.businessinsider.com/science Science Insider on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/BusinessInsiderScience/ Science Insider on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/science_insider/ Business Insider on Twitter: https://twitter.com/businessinsider Tech Insider on Twitter: https://twitter.com/techinsider ------------------------------------------------------ Following is a transcript of the video: What do you think of when you hear the word poison? Arsenic? Cyanide? How about water? Life couldn’t exist without water. But in the right circumstance... Water can be as dangerous as any poison. Here's what happens when you drink too much water. Your kidneys filter out excess waste and water from your bloodstream. But they can only process 800-1,000 mL of water an hour. And if you somehow manage to drink more than that without throwing up, you can run into trouble. Because you’re drinking faster than your kidneys can process it. So the excess ends up in your cells. Normally, your cells are surrounded by a carefully-balanced solution of sodium and water, which flows in and out through tiny holes in the cellular membrane, so it keeps the sodium concentration both in and out of the cell balanced. But when you drink too much water, the sodium solution gets diluted. It’s not salty enough. So some of that extra water rushes into the cell to restore balance and that causes it to swell up. Doctors call this water intoxication and it’s a big problem. Now, most of your cells can handle the swelling to a degree since soft, flexible tissue like fat and muscle can stretch. But for the cells in your brain, it’s another story, because your skull isn’t stretchy. It’s bone. It’s hard — like a rock. So, as your brain swells, it builds up the pressure in your head. At first, you might experience headaches, confusion, or drowsiness. But as the pressure increases, you risk brain damage, coma, and even death. And it could all be over in less than ten hours. A 64-year-old woman, for example, died the same evening after drinking between 30-40 glasses of water. And a group of US Army trainees suffered vomiting and seizes after downing over 2 liters per hour after a tough day of training. But it’s marathon runners who need to be especially careful. A study found that 1 in 6 marathon runners develop at least mild water intoxication because the race stresses their body, including the kidneys. So, they don’t excrete water as efficiently, which can cause water to back up into the blood more easily. People with certain kidney issues are also vulnerable since they can’t properly process water and the problem isn’t unique to water. For example, the same thing can happen if you down too much beer at once. That’s called potomania. The good news is that there’s an easy way to stay safe. The average healthy adult needs somewhere around 3-4 liters of water a day. And since this can come from food and other drinks too, drink when you’re thirsty, and then stop.

Turning Salt water into Drinking water using Solar power | QPT

03:01
Read more Tech News at https://www.rtoz.org/ According to the Securing Water for Food agency, between 2000 and 2050 water demand is expected to increase 55 percent globally, meaning the number of people affected by water scarcity will continue to grow. By 2025, two-thirds of the world's population could be living in severe water stress conditions. Around the world, there is more salty groundwater than fresh, drinkable groundwater. For example, 60 percent of India is underlain by salty water — and much of that area is not served by an electric grid that could run conventional reverse-osmosis desalination plants. To find solution for this drinking water issue in developing countries, USAID the U.S. Agency for International Development had run a global competion for Desal prize. The idea for the competition was to create a system that could remove salt from water and meet three criteria: it had to be cost-effective, environmentally sustainable, and energy efficient. The winners of the $140,000 first prize were a group from MIT and Jain Irrigation Systems. The group came up with a method that uses solar panels to charge a bank of batteries. The batteries then power a system that removes salt from the water through electrodialysis, that means that dissolved salt particles, which have a slight electric charge, are drawn out of the water when a small electrical current is applied. Using the sun instead of fossil fuels to power a desalination plant isn't a totally new idea. Larger solar desalination plants are being seriously investigated in areas where water is becoming a scarce resource, including Chile and California. But the current technology is expensive. The MIT team's this new desalination technology "electrodialysis" is comparatively less expensive. Both electrodialysis and reverse osmosis require the use of membranes, but the membranes in an electrodialysis system are exposed to lower pressures and can be cleared of salt buildup simply by reversing the electrical polarity. That means the expensive membranes should last much longer and require less maintenance. In addition, electrodialysis systems recover a much higher percentage of the water — more than 90 percent, compared with about 40 to 60 percent from reverse-osmosis systems, a big advantage in areas where water is scarce. Kevin: Why don't we start with just telling everyone a little bit about how you got into this OceanSolution? John: It's fortuitous just like the whole journey to get to today, but what happened was my wife was very interested in health food. Her parents died when she was seven and she was raised by her grandparents who were organic farmers and eventually became vegetarians and eventually vegetarian raw foodists. That's how she was raised and so, whenever possible, she was trying to enlighten me to the health benefits of eating good food and eating raw food and so from time to time we would go to health seminars and this one particular instance it was near Irvington, New York on the Hudson River. Soak In Dead Sea Salt For 15 Minutes And You'll Be Amazed With The Transformation

03:03
Nestled between Jordan, Israel, and Palestine, the Dead Sea is a salt-lake more than 15 million years old. Among the planet’s saltiest bodies of water, the Dead Sea has a salinity of 34.2% – it’s ten times as salty as the ocean. Its salinity creates a harsh environment for flora and fauna, earning the name Dead Sea since precious few microorganisms can survive within it. Check out this 5 amazing things dead sea salt can do 1.Dead Sea Salt is Deeply Hydrating Bathing in a solution of 5% Dead Sea salt improves skin hydration, reduces redness and roughness, and enhances the skin barrier, according to a study published in 2005. Sufferers of atopic dry skin submerged one arm in seawater and the other arm in plain tap water for 15 just minutes. While the salt treated arm showed significant improvements in all areas, the tap water arm showed evidence of further transepidermal water loss. The anti-inflammatory and skin hydrating effects of Dead Sea salt are due to its high magnesium content. Magnesium salts bind to water, which in turn boosts skin absorption and permeability. 2. Dead Sea Salt Cleanses and Disinfects Thanks to sulfur’s natural antibacterial properties, Dead Sea salt is wonderful for cleaning the surface of the skin. Because Dead Sea salt contains only small amounts of sulfur salts, it offers a gentle way to reduce oily skin and clear away acne. 3. It is an Excellent Exfoliator Another way Dead Sea salt helps cleanse the skin is its ability to slough off dead skin cells that can contribute to skin roughness, clogged pores, and blemishes. To make a scrub, combine ½ cup of finely ground Dead Sea salt with ¼ cup of coconut oil. 4. Dead Sea Salt Promotes Youthful Skin In evaluating the effects of Dead Sea salt on aging skin, researchers found that it reduces skin roughness that contributes to fine lines and deep wrinkles. Compared with placebo, a commercially prepared anti-wrinkle gel, and a 1% Dead Sea salt solution, these ointments were applied twice daily for four weeks. While the placebo and anti-wrinkle gel reduced skin roughness by 10% and 27% respectively, the Dead Sea salt treatment was superior in smoothing skin, reducing deep wrinkling by an average of more than 40%.  5.Dead Sea Salt Calms Rheumatoid Arthritis Marked by painful swelling of the joints, rheumatoid arthritis may over time lead to bone erosion and deformity. Though there is no cure, Dead Sea salt therapy has proven to be an effective treatment for many of the symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis. In the study, patients bathed in Dead Sea salt daily for 20 minutes for two weeks. Evaluated by rheumatologists and their own self-assessments, patients showed significant improvements in morning stiffness, 15 meter walk time, hand-grip strength, circumference of joints, the number of active joints, and the activities of daily living.

How Seawater Desalination Works

06:41
CASE STUDY: Desalination is a complicated process, the Seven Seas Corp.* approached DaVinci Studio to develop an animation that simplified the explanation of the process. Taking a cue from Seven Seas we started with squiggly style animation to give the technical looking components a non-technical look. Bottom line is to go from engineering-speak to the layman's level. Desalination (also called "desalinization" and "desalting") is the process of removing dissolved salts from water, thus producing fresh water from seawater or brackish water. Desalting technologies can be used for many applications. The most prevalent use is to produce potable water from saline water for domestic or municipal purposes. Farming With Salty Water Is Possible

02:11
One of the many adverse effects of global climate change is the rise of sea levels, which scientists say can increase the salinity level of fresh water reserves. As saline water cannot be used for irrigation, farm fields close to the seashore are lost to agriculture. But a farm in Netherlands has managed to grow healthy and tasty vegetables in soil irrigated with salt water. VOA’s George Putic reports. LEADIN: Scientists claim that if you look down at Earth from outer space, around 71 percent of the planet's surface is covered by ocean. But is the water fit to drink? Well engineers in Los Angeles in the United States are now working to turn Pacific Ocean salt water into safe, tasty drinking water. STORYLINE: A team of water workers from the Los Angeles area have borrowed some space at this beach front power plant to do just that. They've set up a test project to take in salt water from the nearby ocean, run it through a series of filters, and turn it into drinking water. They call it desalination -- or desal for short. And it's a proven process of turning ocean salt water into fresh water. A desal pilot program was launched here four years ago by the West Basin Municipal Water District, which manages the water needs for some 900-thousand consumers in Southern California, near Los Angeles. They can produce more than a thousand gallons of desalinated water per hour. For now it's just a test, and is not available to the public. Officials say it's proof that ocean water can be a safe and satisfying source of fresh water. So how does it taste? Officials say the proof is in the drink. They claim their thirsty customers consume an average of more than 190 gallons of water per person each day.
