Beyond Passive House: The Nature Connection | Tom Bassett-Dilley | TEDxRushU

21:40
While energy efficiency is a critical component of sustainability, its application must be guided by principles of health and beauty. This talk introduces the emerging design field of biophilia, the inherent human-nature connection, and show examples of building designs that embody both ultra-efficiency and biophilic design. Tom Bassett-Dilley, AIA, CPHC®, is a leader in the world of low-energy, health-promoting buildings, presenting locally and nationally on topics of Passive House design, building science, Living Buildings, and green preservation. His firm, TBDA, designed the first certified Passive House buildings in the Chicagoland area, and he continues to lead the movement in Chicago and beyond. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at http://ted.com/tedx

Couple Builds Energy Efficient Passive Solar Home - Green Building

09:36
In this video we meet Casey & Natasha, a conscious couple who built a passive solar home near Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. In addition to orienting their house to face south, they installed overhangs that block the sun to keep it cool during summer months and allow the sun to enter and heat the house during winter months. They also installed a 10 kW solar system that sells clean electricity back to the grid through Ontario's MicroFIT Program and the revenue helps cover their own utility bills. The house was built to Passive House standards and is currently pending certification. You can learn more about Passive House here: http://www.passivehouse.ca/fundamentals/ The exterior walls of this house are 20" thick and are insulated using Roxul insulation which is made locally, better for the environment, can get wet, and has less flame retardants than traditional fiberglass insulation, which means cleaner air quality in the home. To maximize the energy efficiency of their home, they installed triple glazed windows, a drain water heat recovery system, an air source heat pump water heater, and a bioethanol fireplace. They also chose sustainable alternatives like concrete countertops instead of granite, and reclaimed pine flooring instead of using new wood. Last but not least, they designed their house to be completely fossil fuel-free which means that they don't use any fossil fuels to power or heat their home. Casey & Natasha are building a conscious group of companies to align their work life with their personal values. Their companies include The Conscious Builder, the Conscious Living podcast and the Conscious Store (coming soon!). http://cgreyconstruction.com http://caseyplusnatasha.com Thanks for watching! Passive House = 90% Home Energy Reduction!

11:00
Passive House is an incredible building standard for designing and certifying energy efficient buildings (homes, schools, hospitals, offices, etc.). Using the 5 green building techniques explained in this video, Passive Houses need only 10% of the energy that a conventional home uses (that's a 90% energy saving!). We met up with Alex and Sandra from BCIT's High Performance Building Lab in Vancouver, Canada to learn about the different ways that a home can be built to use less energy. They're pretty simple to understand and don't cost much more than a typical new build: - Highly insulated building envelope - High performance triple glazed windows - Elimination of thermal bridges - Continuous air sealed layer - Heat recovery ventilation The building lab at BCIT is a really exciting new space where tradespeople can come to learn about green building techniques. To learn more, check out this link to their website: www.bcit.ca/zeroenergybuildings We want to say an extra special thank you to Sandra and Alex for taking time to show us how all of these building techniques worked (late into the evening!). We had a blast and learned so much! But, lately, the trend is to leave as little a mark as possible on our environment. Imagine a home that is not merely energy efficient, but doesn't have a single energy bill in its mailbox. The idea of a Zero House is very simple and appealing one – building well sealed, well insulated houses, that supply electricity and heating that is produced and supplied in the right way. Michael Reynolds had a dream. The architect wanted to build completely self-sufficient houses that are part of the environment, rather than a burden on it. Watch more films about Ecology: https://rtd.rt.com/tags/ecology-documentaries/ An ideal home would be made from recycled materials, maintain a comfortable climate, generate sustainable power from renewable sources, treat its sewage, and provide clean potable water, as well as food, for its inhabitants. He built his first ‘Earthship’ in 1972 almost entirely from empty soda and beer cans and rammed earth. Now he is the prophet of a movement that advocates “radical sustainability.” Today, a 634-acre subdivision near Taos, New Mexico, dubbed the ‘Greater World Community,’ is dotted with off-grid homes based on his designs. Meanwhile, an Earthship Academy has opened to teach people from all over the world how to build homes and other buildings based on ‘biotecture’ principles. Earthships are not without controversy. Their designs have fallen foul of the authorities for violating building codes, and some owners have complained their homes have not performed as advertised. Meanwhile, some places have banned off-grid living altogether. 1950s Home Retrofit to Super Efficient Passive House - Urban Green Building

06:09
This 1950s Montreal house was retrofitted to become a super efficient passive house by adding a 16 inch thick layer of cellulose insulation to the exterior. Construction Le Tournesol: http://www.constructionletournesol.com/en/ Maison Ozalée's builder, Richard Price from Construction Le Tournesol, also used triple glazed windows with insulated frames, and strategically placed small windows on the north side of the building to reduce heat loss, and placed large windows on the south side to take advantage of solar gain, which helps heat the house in winter. In order to avoid overheating the house in the summer, there are built-in shading elements above the large south-facing windows. The home is airtight, with plywood sheathing to solidify the older home doubling as a vapour barrier once all the seams were taped. Because of the energy gained from passive solar, and because it's airtight, this home only needs approximately 10% of the energy a typical home of the same size would need to heat during the winter. The owners are very environmentally conscious and added additional features to their home to make it sustainable not just in terms of energy, but water as well. They installed a rainwater catchment system that feeds water into an underground water cistern which they use to water their enormous permaculture garden. They use no municipal water to irrigate their plants. Indoors, they've installed a grey water recycling system that allows them to filter and clean water from the shower & bath and then reuse it a second time to flush their toilets. It was really interesting to see how this alternative building technique can result in such enormous energy savings! And to see that an existing home can fairly easily be retrofitted to be more energy efficient! Thanks for watching! A Certified Passive House in Santa Cruz, CA - Green Building & Beauty Combined

04:18
See the interior and exterior of the first ever new-construction certified Passive House in Santa Cruz County. Constructed to be super-insulated and nearly air tight, this Passive House was designed as a modern prairie style home with simple and elegant features. The deep roof overhangs, natural stone and wood materials, and large pool deck all contribute to the sophisticated look of this home. The clients, architect, and contractor all collaborated to construct this gorgeous 3500 square-foot home. The clients choose a single-level design that allows them to age in place. The expansive pool deck and the interior living space of the home are connected with a gorgeous stone backdrop that wraps from the interior to the exterior of the house. The home features large indoor and outdoor living spaces complete with an outdoor kitchen and a stunning view of Monterey Bay. A passive house uses solar and other "passive" energy sources to heat the home instead of a traditional HVAC system. The home is constructed to be almost entirely air tight, so it looses very little energy. A home built with passive house principles uses only about 10% of the heating and cooling costs of a traditional house. Every certified passive house features a high-efficiency heat recovery ventilator that filters the air in the home. Indoor air is continuously exchanged for fresh outdoor air, allowing the home to be energy efficient and comfortable in temperature during any month of the year. Tiny House Concept Adapted Into Amazing Modern Home

16:22
This stunning small home has been constructed using tiny house design principles as part of a new suburban subdivision in Wanaka New Zealand. At 33 square meters (355 square feet) it's a very compact home and is filled with super clever tiny house and small space design ideas. Become a Living Big Patron: https://www.patreon.com/livingbig Constructed from structurally insulated panels or SIPs, this tiny house is well insulated, modern and constructed from very high quality materials. https://www.livingbiginatinyhouse.com/tiny-house-suburban-subdivision/ Building a house on foundations using the tiny house concept has allowed Will and Jen to create a home which is the best of both worlds. It's streamlined to the couples needs, takes up a very small footprint and has all the advantages of a tiny house, yet it's also not restricted to the standard tiny house dimensions and road-travel limitations, allowing the small home to be much higher and a bit wider than a conventional tiny house. It also means they haven't had to take weight into consideration in their build. I hope you enjoy this weeks episode! Architect Arthur Pichler has built the first passive house in Italy's South Tyrol region. It doesn't require any additional energy sources. Passive Houses allow for heating and cooling related energy savings of up to 90% compared with typical building stock and over 75% compared with average new builds. Tiny Earthship Style Cabin Built with Recycled Tires & Green Roof

06:49
This mini earthship-style cabin is built with recycled tires and glass bottles, cob, and a gorgeous green roof. It's a 1-room cabin so the bedroom, kitchen, and dining room are all in one open concept space. The bathroom is the only thing that is separate from the living area. While this micro cabin design looks a lot like an earthship, the design does not include all 6 principles of an earthship, as outlined by Michael Reynolds: https://www.earthshipglobal.com/# This cabin is indirectly powered with solar, it's built with reclaimed and natural materials, and it has a passive solar design. It does not collect rainwater, produce food or treat grey and black water. We visited this green building during a recent trip to Portugal and were excited to see such a neat space surrounded by inspiring projects and other structures. It has a natural pool/pond, trails, a yurt, a straw bale home, a yoga studio, dogs, chickens, horses, and a cat, as well as extensive gardens and fruit trees. A beautiful permaculture space/eco-resort to visit for sure! Green house plans are growing in popularity and represent a design philosophy bent on creating energy-savings beginning with the home design. Green design is popular – almost too popular. Simple Permaculture-Based Grey-Water Treatment System

12:40
In this episode, we return to Murray's tiny house on wheels in the Yarra Valley, Victoria, Australia, where he has set up a clever grey water treatment system for his home based on permaculture principles. Become a Living Big Patron: https://www.patreon.com/livingbig Grey Water Treatment is really important, but there isn't a lot of information out there about these systems, especially for off-the-grid tiny homes like this one. In this video, we go into detail about how the system works, and how it was built giving you all the information to tackle the task yourself should you with to build one. Murray's system is affordable, easy to set up and can be done as a DIY project. The clean water which comes from the micro-wetland is then used in a series of wicking garden beds for growing organic food. We spent an amazing day at the Sustainable City, a housing development in Dubai with 3,500 people already living there and it's still not quite finished. This truly is a remarkable achievement, a stark lesson to building contractors the world over. It's not more expensive to build and it's hugely cheaper and more efficient to live in. Green Buildings in India: The GRIHA Approach

09:29
Green Buildings in India: The GRIHA Approach Most of India's historical buildings are engineering feats that were achieved hundreds of years ago. Silently, yet eloquently, they tell us how man and nature were intricately connected. Forts, palaces, and ordinary houses- they were all built around nature. And very often, with limited wastage of resources. Over the last century, as buildings reached higher into the sky, they not only housed growing populations—they became symbols of modernity and progress. But somewhere along the way, buildings also became detrimental for the earth's climate. Today, 40% of energy-related global emissions are attributed to buildings. 60% of waste comes from buildings or related activities. But on a smarter planet, buildings can be designed differently- buildings that harness gifts of nature, buildings that need less energy, buildings that breathe. This was the vision that created GRIHA or Green Rating for Integrated Habitat Assessment. GRIHA is a tool that measures a building's environmental performance, and it works in all climatic zones of the country. Developed by TERI, GRIHA has been adopted by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy as India's National Rating System. It is a green building 'design evaluation system', and is suitable for all kinds of buildings in different climatic zones of the country. #GreenBuildings #SustainableHabitat #GRIHA Subscribe our YouTube Channel for more such videos: https://www.youtube.com/teri

There are a considerable number of ways to design and build a passive solar greenhouse but a small number of principles that you can use to ensure success. In this video I talk about the 7 main principles that lead to a successful passive solar greenhouse design.
