Counterfeit Culture Moscow: Inside the Russian Fashion Black Market
For the second installment of Counterfeit Culture, Highsnobiety’s first-ever documentary series, we headed to Moscow to find what’s driving Russia’s thriving market for fake streetwear. Russia’s counterfeit industry stretches back decades, to when Communism isolated the country from Western products. Now, almost 30 years after the collapse of the Soviet Union, Russia’s borders are open, but a fragile economy, international sanctions and low wages has kept the country’s demand for fakes alive and well. Clothes Shopping in Russia
In this episode, we take you clothes shopping in Russia. Russians are known to be well dressed and fashion conscious...see where they go become that way! Clothes shopping in Russia isn't all that different from the U.S., but there are some interesting surprises to find in this mall, which is the biggest in all of Europe. Some believe that Moscow is expensive as a shopping destination. It can be, but only if you stick around the tourist parts of Moscow like the Red Square. Once you get out of the city center, prices are more or less the same as in the U.S., and sometimes cheaper. Also, Russian malls are filled with lots of entertainment, in addition to clothing stores. We didn't have time to cover all of the fun activities that you can do in the Aviapark mall, but if you are ever in Moscow and want to avoid a bad weather day, a trip to Aviapark's fun indoor attractions is not a bad idea! Lambada Market in Moscow, March 2016
I visited the famous Lambada market in Moscow on the 13th of March and did a report about it. Lambada is the Brooklyn's Williamsburg in Russia! A parallel universe, with happy people on board! It's an annual market, with big food courts, vintage and design clothes, DIY accessories and music. You can also see me enjoying a cup-cake smile emoticon

Russia Fashion, Clothing Brands and Designers
Russia Fashion, Clothing Brands and Designers. http://asiafashionclothing.com/fashion/asia/russia/. Russian Apparel and Garments Wholesale and Retail. Association of Designers of Russia. Their mission is to promote design as innovative and intellectual creative activity which must become important instrument for Russian economy.
(22 Oct 1997) Eng/Russ/Nat All eyes have been on the fashionable catwalks of London, Paris and Milan as designers unveil their Spring collections. There are several well known capitals to where the fashion conscious flock. Moscow in Russia is not one of them. Its fashions were once considered a joke in the West, characterised by drab and unflattering clothes made of cheap materials. Times have changed and Russians are among the best if not the most overdressed people in the world. Although avid consumers of labels such as Versace and Calvin Klein they are now turning their attention once more to home grown designers. Linda Evangelista's recent visit to Moscow was treated with as much reverence as that of a world leader. Cosmonauts and athletes were once Russian icons - now it's supermodels, a reflection of the greater emphasis put on clothes and appearance in modern-day Russia. Aware of Linda's pulling power top Italian fashion houses flew her in to model their winter collections. But would Linda have got out of bed if the clothes had been designed by a Russian? SOUNDBITE: (English) 'All fashion interests me. All of it I think is very artistic and your country has proved to be one of the most artistic in the world and so yes I would be very proud to wear a designer from your country.' SUPER CAPTION: Linda Evangelista, Supermodel At least one designer item is to be found in the wardrobe of most young Russians today. They're hunger to be seen in top labels is greater than that in the West. The images on the pages of fashion magazines are slavishly reproduced on the streets of Moscow. Designer boutiques such as Wild Orchid, an exclusive lingerie shop, are mushrooming in the capital. One bra from this shop can cost anything between $70 to $200. For many of Russia's new rich price is no obstacle. However this lust for anything foreign is now wearing off and the fashion-conscious are finding that domestic designers make clothes as well as their foreign counterparts. Tanya Romanioyk's workshop in a rundown former communal apartment is a far cry from the splendour of Wild Orchid but her lingerie line would not be out of place on its shelves. Despite being dogged by lack of start up capital and difficulties in finding quality fabric for her clothes, she says that designers in this country are best placed for tapping the growing home market. SOUNDBITE: (Russian) 'The name of my company is Russian Chic. My goal is to create clothes with a Russian flavour.' SUPER CAPTION: Tanya Romanioyk, Clothes Designer Just a day after Linda Evangelista's appearance for Versace, Russian fashion week opened on the same catwalk - but there were no superstars here. It's a showcase for young designers across the country and a way to show that Moscow is trying to make its way as a fashion capital. Two designers Yelena Vassa and her husband Stefan Ungaro who went to work in New York seven years ago have returned to show their new collection in fashion week. They believe Russia is now enjoying a creative renaissance and the time is ripe for designers. SOUNDBITE: What's happening now is that Russian people are trying to find their own identity so to speak. They are trying to find themselves as a nation. Maybe as a tendency to look inside themselves rather than outside this country SUPER CAPTION: Stefan Ungaro, fashion designer Russian consumers will still continue to search out designer labels, from New York, London, Paris and Milan. But given time Moscow could yet feature on the pages of the fashion magazines. Tanya Romanioyk is just one of many new entrepreneurs who have designs in the future of the country's fashion business. Knockoff Streetwear market Guangzhou China, Hypebeast fashion Supreme Bape Fog ASSC offwhite palace
The market here in Guangzhou China has so much streetwear it blows my mind. I DO NOT CONDONE THE PRODUCTION OR SALE OF KNOCKOFF, FAKE, Goods as that would be supporting the black market and taking away from the designer. I however do enjoy seeing brands such as supreme, bape, fear of god, anti social social club, off white, palace, vetements and many other hypebeast brands as the art work and style is interesting. Please do not ask for me to buy you some thing as I do not export and I can not give out the address as it is against youtubes policies. These market videos are for entertainment and educational purposes and show a part of every day like in Guangzhou China and how the fashion is over here. head to toe clothing and sneakers every one over here has a different style and it changes from province to province. beijing to shanghai to shenzhen and also changes each asian country such as thailand, philippines, japan and korea. These items are even making their way around the world to places such as russia and sadly north america.

High class fashion boom in Moscow stores
1. Pan from Moscow street to facade of fashion boutiques 2. Various of designer shop windows 3. Interior Gucci shop 4. Interior jewellery shop 5. Helen Yarmak, top Russian clothes designer and model, displaying one of her pieces 6. SOUNDBITE: (English) Helen Yarmak, Russian clothes designer and model "Now my clients are mostly independent women, I mean women who are in business. And they travel a lot, they see all the world, they are people from the world. And most of them have their own businesses and they need clothes as part of their image." 7. Mid shot of Yarmak's work 8. Close-up of Yarmak's label 9. SOUNDBITE: (English) Alexander Gubsky, Deputy editor of Russian daily, Vedomosti "Last year the fashion sales in Moscow were incredibly successful. I think there are two main reasons why the sales were so successful. Firstly, this is economic. You know that last year our economy grew by 5.2 per cent, so people have more money to spend. And the second reason, of course, is psychological, because we Russians have lost our money twice in the last ten years, so Russians don't believe in banks or mutual funds and want to spend their money now." 10. Mid shot of car arriving at shops 11. Cutaway of shop window 12. SOUNDBITE: (Russian) Voxpop, Maria "In the last two or three years many new boutiques have appeared and there's no point shopping abroad because it's practically the same here." 13. Exterior shop 14. SOUNDBITE: (Russian) Oxanna, Shop assistant in a designer boutique "In our shop different people come in and shop - young people, more solid people, bankers, office workers and children of politicians." 15. Exterior tracking shot along glitzy street in darkness 16. Entrance to the Corona Club 17. Various of the rich and famous inside the club STORYLINE: Retail sales are on the up in the Russian capital Moscow - and not in the everyday areas of shopping, such as food and other mundane products. Moscow's glitzy, high-class fashion boutiques are outperforming New York, Milan and other cities. Many high-fashion houses, including Brioni, Givenchy and Chanel, sold more in their Moscow boutiques last year than they did in other cities. Store owners say luxury clothing sales have been growing in Russia since 1999 and increased this year by around 40 per cent as the market returned to pre-crisis 1997 levels. Brioni's Moscow boutique took first place in worldwide sales last year, while Gucci's store came in second after New York and the Dolce & Gabbana boutique came second after Milan. Fendi's Moscow store came in third after Rome and New York, while Chanel came in third worldwide but first in terms of sales per square metre. Nina Ricci's Moscow boutique is the company's best performer internationally, while Givenchy is also in top place and Bosco di Ciliegi is one of Max Mara's biggest buyers. But who is shopping in these stores? According to Helen Yarmak, one of Russia's top fur designers, they're young upwardly mobile women with their own businesses - in other words, New Russians. For these people image is everything - not just what they wear, but where you go and with whom. Being seen in the right clothes at the right party with the right people is, for them, of the utmost importance. And, it is very difficult to say when the industry itself will be in place because it fully depends on the investments. When there are true investments into production then there will be an industry. Until there is some, it is too early to speak about an industry. For now, it is only possible to say that there are designers and that Russian fashion is starting to arise." April 12, 2002 28. various of Nina Donis collection presentation STORYLINE: FLEDGLING RUSSIAN FASHION INDUSTRY SHOWS WHAT IT'S MADE OF Russian designers have been showing their winter 2003 collections in Moscow, in the hope the domestic market will finally make room for homegrown talent. Over the last ten years, Western fashions have had a growing influence on the Russian market. World famous designers have boutiques in Moscow, including Vivienne Westwood, Yamomoto and Les Copains. And as most Russian fashion followers are unwilling to buy from domestic designers, and it is rare for a Russian name to appear among the internationally renowned brands on sale here. Russian pret-a-porter week, which took place in Moscow between the 9th and the 13th of April, proves a fledgling Russian fashion industry does exist. But, it is very weak, undeveloped and poorly financed. Nina and Doris were among the young designers showing their collections. Even though they are known among other Russian designers, they are struggling to sell in their home country, and are skeptical about their future prospects. Like many other Russian designers unable to find recognition at home, Nina and Donis mainly rely on exporting to the West. It is easier to sell there as people are not scared to wear clothes created by less well known designers. As they make their mark in the West, they become more accepted in Russia. Slava Zaitsev - Russia's fashion survivor
(12 Oct 2016) SLAVA ZAITSEV - RUSSIA'S FASHION SURVIVOR At 78, fashion designer Slava Zaitsev may look frail but he still makes two new collections every year, one of which premieres Thursday (13 OCT. 2016) at Russian Fashion Week. The son of a laundress, Zaitsev grew up in a communal apartment in the Soviet Union, where fashion was officially outlawed. Zaitsev was barred from most schools as the son of an "enemy of the people" - his father was a Soviet prisoner of war in Germany who was sent to a Gulag camp once he got back home. The designer was accepted to a local chemical technical school - where he got straight A's - before being sent to Moscow to study at the Textile Institute. In the 1960s, Zaitsev was producing bold designs and colors in a country uniformly dressed in drab clothing, attracting the admiration of rare foreign visitors. A French magazine profiled the young designer, calling him a "Russian Dior." That enraged Zaitsev's boss at Moscow's one and only hub of fashion design. Reflecting the Soviet Union's disdain for individual personalities, his boss wrote "we have 60 Diors!" in a local paper, according to Zaitsev. Zaitsev was one of the first Soviet designers to show his collection on catwalks in the West as the Iron Curtain fell in the 1980s. But he was disappointed in what he saw as the money-driven nature of the American fashion industry. On his first visit abroad, Zaitsev presented his collection at New York's Waldorf Astoria in 1987. The friendly staff assigned to him to help with the show all disappeared by the time it was over, he recalls. "They got their money and left. This was a complete disappointment for me that money was more important in the West - I still can't get used to the idea," he says. Despite his age, Zaitsev is dreaming of venturing into the mass market. His House of Fashion - which makes made-to-measure clothes - is looking for investors to launch A collection, something "not too cheap but really good quality," he says. Zaitsev has even already found production facilities in his hometown of Ivanovo, about 250 kilometers (155 miles) north-east of Moscow. Vinyl records back in fashion in Russia
(7 Sep 2017) LEADIN Old fashioned vinyl records are back in fashion in Russia. In a digital world the retro discs are proving popular with both collectors and even the younger generation. STORYLINE: Working in limited lighting, sound engineer Stas Semenov is hard at work. He's making modern Russian vinyl records at this small studio on the outskirts of Moscow. It all starts by putting a pre-made empty vinyl disc on the recording machine. The plates themselves are cut at a factory outside Moscow. They are then brought here to this little room, where Semenov does his magic, turning black pieces of plastic into "musical records with a soul". According to Semenov, the process of vinyl recording isn't difficult. The main problem is the age of the equipment: "This equipment is really old," he says. "For example the lathe cutting lacquer disc is more than 40 years old. So naturally this equipment is very special, capricious, one has to know how to handle it. Sometimes it can be in a bad mood and you need to learn how to adjust to it." The quality of the record is checked by looking through a microscope or by pointing a camera at it and checking the images on a computer screen. White spots mean defects that need to be fixed. The idea to revive vinyl production in Russia came to Semenov's sound recording label Ultra Production 5 years ago. It took them 3 years of attempts to reach a certain level of quality to be able to start fulfilling commercial orders. One of the biggest challenges was to find people who would know how to work with the equipment. Semenov was trained by a man who learned vinyl production in London. Vinyl used to be made at Russia's Aprelevsky factory. Once a huge factory producing millions of vinyl records a year, Aprelevka now lies in ruins and is slowly becoming a loft residential district. Numerous attempts to give vinyl record production a second chance at the factory failed, but some of its old lathes are in use again at Ultra Production. Head of the label, Andrey Belonogov, says they found these lathes in Budapest where they had been sold after the Soviet Union collapse and closure of the factory. Despite the success of vinyl at Ultra Production some musical experts are sceptical about its future in Russia. Ilya Voronin, Editor-in-chief of online music magazine "Mixmag Russia" describes the process of keeping and cleaning them as an "esoteric art" which wouldn't suit everybody. He also claims Russian vinyl has never been great quality and will struggle to keep up with that made in the west since production stopped completely after the collapse of the USSR in 1991. But collectors would appear to disagree. Famous photographer Igor Vereshchagin is one of those. Not only does he collect vinyl discs but he's also working on a photo project about vinyl as well. Vereshchagin started taking photos of his friends and famous people with their favourite vinyl records in 2000. He is planning on releasing his project, organising an exhibition and possibly publish a book by the end of this year. Vereshchagin says vinyl encourages people to listen to music more attentively. "You have to go and find a disc, clean it, put it on a player, turn it to the other side after the first part. This motivates to listen to the music in a more attentive and logical manner," he says. For numerous Russian artists, producing vinyl records in their home country makes a good financial sense. The high demand at Ultra Production is proof of that: "This, by the way, says that the vinyl market in Russia is developing." However buying new vinyl records in Russia don't come cheap: the average price is around 1500-2000 rubles ($USDollars 25-35). One enthusiastic shopper is Yana, who didn't give her last name You can license this story through AP Archive: http://www.aparchive.com/metadata/youtube/63f0a601617f740d24ea70f7b5e01885 Find out more about AP Archive: http://www.aparchive.com/HowWeWork
