Staging a fashion show? This resource for young people outlines the key points to consider when planning a fashion show. TRANSCRIPT: This fashion show was the result of a joint competition run by the BBC and the V&A, inviting young people to create outfits inspired by the V&A's collections. This film shows a selection of outfits by the winning designers. Whether you are staging a fashion show for London Fashion Week or at school or college the steps are similar. The first thing you need to identify is the budget. You can be very creative with a small amount of money, but you have to be realistic about costs and payment of people involved. Be practical about what you can achieve with the money and time you have. Identify what you will need to pay for and what you could get done for free. Unexpected costs can dramatically affect your show and good advance planning can lead to finding useful contacts and better deals. The following aspects are key to consider when you are planning a fashion show: Producer: One of the first things you need to identify is who and what is needed to make the show happen. This role is usually done by the producer. It is their role to project-manage the event and take overall responsibility for the show. Location: Where will your show take place? Fashion shows can take place in all sorts of venues, but you will need to sort out insurance, risk assessment, liability, health and safety. Set design: You should discuss with the fashion designer or designers what the overall look and feel should be -- whether you want to include seating for your audience, what type of lighting you will use, hair and make-up looks and music. Do keep expectations realistic, otherwise you can waste a lot time discussing ideas you can't afford. Models: Many of the models used in this show were friends of the designers. If you are using models from an agency you will need to have someone overseeing the casting and monitoring the budget. They will also need to be responsible for the fitting of the clothing on the models. It is a good idea to ask agencies about 'new faces', these are models who are just starting their careers and looking to gain experience. Hair and make-up: You will need to engage a team of make-up artists and hairdressers to style the models on the day. The looks need to be agreed in advance and a hair and make-up test often takes place in advance of the show. With this event, as it was a group show, the look had to work across several designers' collections. Backstage: Where are the models going to get ready? Does the venue have an area where the clothing can be organised on rails and the models can prepare and change? Mirrors, lights, rails, hangers and seats for the models are all things you need to consider. Ideally you need a backstage manager to work behind the scene overseeing -- ensuring the timings are right and the models exit at the correct moment during the show. You will also need dressers who will help the models do quick changes during the show. Publicity: This is one of the key elements of success and one that is often overlooked until it is too late to get an audience. Work out who you want to come, how long in advance you need to tell people. Social media, websites, flyers, posters, adverts, press releases are all ways of getting the word out -- the more imaginative the better! Catering: You need to ensure at the very least that people have access to water or cold drinks as it can get very hot backstage. If you can include food and drinks in your budget that will avoid people wandering off for breaks. Schedule: It is the producer's responsibility to draw up the call sheets, telling all involved what time and where to arrive. There needs to be several hours built in for hair and make up, plus rehearsal time. This enables the models to learn the route, find out how long to take and where to turn. Post-show: Plan what will happen after the show -- ensure that you have a team of people to help check that all the clothes and accessories are present and correctly packed to return to the designers. Tidying up takes as much time as setting up -- identify in advance who will tidy. You don't want to miss the party!

Click for more: http://ww2.kqed.org/artschool/ Oakland high school student Zachary Fernandez made it to the finals on the first season of Project Runway Junior, then headed straight back to Oakland School of the Arts to continue his education as a designer. His newest collection, Kathmandu, was inspired by recovery efforts in Nepal after the devastating 2015 earthquake. Art School followed Fernandez's process as he sketched, sourced fabric, and designed his new project, revealed at a culminating fashion show in spring 2016. Hi, my name is Zachary Fernandez and I'm currently a fashion student. So I am starting my Kathmandu 2016 collection. My collection's gonna be debuting at my school fashion show, and so I have little under seven weeks to get this all put together. So our school assignment was to pick a city that we wanted to be inspired by for this collection. I ended with Kathmandu, Nepal, all of the trouble that they went through last year was really inspiring and I was able to take those ideas of imbalance and the destruction of culture and apply that to this new collection. These are the pieces that I ended up designing. They're ever-changing and they kind of just are always in flux. My sketching process involves a lot of images, a lot of mixed medias, I like to do collages, watercolors, acrylic paste, it's a real reflection of what my mind looks like. Here you have the final sketches that I've done. The sketching process for me is really a major step between just ideas and kind of this fantasy world that I've created in my mind to really functional wearable pieces. Fabric sourcing is one of my favorite things to do. It's really like a group activity, like meet a couple of friends, we'll just go, we'll explore the city, we'll get inspiration. So I'm looking for like a very pale blue that's almost like very silverish, and then I'm gonna be looking for a very deep, rust orange color. Okay, so I need to find this, but more grayish blue. The fabric store is one of those places that you go in with one idea and one concept and one thought, and you come out with like 500 more. This is it. - This is it! - This is it. - [Girl] Dude! - Hey! Yes! So I spend the majority of my time draping and it's definitely a part that will make or break a piece. I take a piece of muslin, which is just a really basic blend fabric, and I started sculpting it to the dress form. And then those mock-ups that I make of the dress form are then fitted to the model, and sometimes I try them on a model, I'm like, this is hideous, I don't know why, it just overpowers her or something happens and that leads to even better ideas and even more just, creativeness. When you design while you create, I just think it takes so much longer and you like pressure yourself so much more. So, my design mind is turned off. And it's just about sewing, and sewing, and sewing, and sewing, and sewing. So after I finish draping, I take a part of that mockup and I totally seam rip it and I re-pattern it, and then I cut out of my real fabric. It's always really nerve-wracking 'cause a lot of times the fabric's all that you have, either the budget doesn't allow for you to get more fabric, or there's simply not anymore left. It has this like box-like structure in it. The box is actually lined with horse-hair so that it can kind of take the shape and that's why I'm kind of trying to like manipulate it right now 'cause it just takes on whatever shape you really need it to. The show, oh the show. Six days, and I'm still cutting up fabric like, I don't think that's normal. There's always going to be that last minute hurry up and finish like state of being. I have a picture in my mind about how this is supposed to go, but who knows if it actually go that way. I think that there can be a lot of different ways to read the look. Obviously you look for like the main things like color, silhouette, is this an evening piece, is this a day piece and you just kind of put the garment and choose certain categories and that really helps people read fashion out, by the time the piece is on the runway I'm already thinking about a whole new collection and I'm really thinking something totally different, but it doesn't really hit me that these people, for them it's the first time that they've seen this. I've spent months and months planning and sketching and putting it together. If I see all these different things in these pieces, but no one else does, then it's kind of sad, but then it's also part of what makes fashion art, is because people see it in so many different ways. We are in my home, studio, bedroom combination in Berkeley, California. I have this look from Project Runway Junior, which was the first episode, and this look for my most recent collection. They really mean a lot to me 'cause they show how much progress I've made within the last four, five months.

A commonly seen element of such outfits is that they’re often impractical, unwieldy and, to the layperson, hilariously bizarre looking. So why don’t fashion shows just show off clothes people might actually want to wear, instead of going with outlandish outfits? I'm Trudi Tapscott, and one of the most exciting parts of modeling is walking on a runway. And it is an art form. I think the basics of walking is learning where to position your weight, where to position your shoulders. It's very relaxed. You have to keep your body straight, your neck is straight, your shoulders are straight. You have to remember that you are showing clothes, and you have to also remember specifically who you are walking for. Because, there is kind of different walks. But, the basics are, you want to keep your shoulders back, your hips forward, and your feet straight. Which all sounds really easy in the beginning, but once you really start walking and putting all the moving parts together, it's really difficult. You have to keep your weight a little bit forward, you don't want to put all the weight on your heel. You want to look like you are gliding. Your face is completely relaxed, like you're not thinking about it and it's second nature, and you're not singing the words to the song, which is also something that happens in the beginning. Balance their stride, balance their weight, and keep the shift of their body and their arms to their sides. If you swing your arms too much, it's a huge distraction. So, you want to keep everything really simple and walk very basically. It's very simple, it's very balanced, and it's in high heels. And the way you practice this at home, if you want to become confident in learning how to walk as a model, you put a full length mirror at the end of your hall. Hopefully, it's just a flat surface, and you walk back and forth. When a model first comes to New York, that is all they do, is just keep practicing. You have models come in the agency all the time, and they are critiqued. Different agents go and watch them, how they walk in certain heels, walking in a variety of high heels. Sometimes at shows at the last minute, you don't get the perfect size of shoe, so you have to learn to walk in different sizes, because at the very end of the day, you have to be able to start and finish the runway with whatever you have on, and make it look great. Knowing that you are walking from your head to your toe, that it's very straight but it's balanced, keeping your arms to your sides, that's what really makes a great walk. And no one knows how to do that without practicing. Walking is one of the key things that you have to practice, that you have to practice all the time.

I'm Trudi Tapscott. Britt: And I'm Britt Bergmeister. Trudi: In order to get a modeling job, you need to go on a modeling casting and you need to go on an audition. What happens there? Britt: I mean, generally you go and meet the clients. Sometimes there will be a few girls there. Sometimes the wait will be five minutes. Sometimes there will be over 200 girls and the wait will be two, three hours. You've got to be open and you can't get frustrated. Bring a book. You're going to be waiting a long time. Bring water, bring snacks. Don't get frustrated. It'll come across when you meet the client, so just be happy. Be thankful that you have the opportunity to get a job and just show your happy, confident personality. Trudi: What happens? They ask you for your book or your first...? Britt: Generally, you'll walk in. They'll ask for your book and you hand them your book, maybe a comp card, and sometimes you'll have to take a picture or two just so they can remember how you were that day. Sometimes you'll have to introduce yourself to a video camera, and sometimes you'll have to walk. That's a big thing. You'll definitely have to walk. So, it depends on the client and what you're casting for, but generally they'll let you know. Just be prepared. Have your high-heel shoes. Have something that will show off your body. I usually wear black, something black and tight. So, yeah. That's generally what happens. Trudi: That's generally how it goes. Sometimes you're meeting one person. Sometimes you're meeting five. You walk into a table of five people. Britt: Yeah. Trudi: Sometimes everyone is in the same room. Sometimes you go in a separate room. I think that if the casting people have more than one person there, sometimes they talk amongst themselves or they talk about the pictures in your book. They ask you, "Who shot this?" or, "Who's the photographer?" It's really good for you to remember the names of the photographers that you shot with if they say, "Who shot this picture?" So, that information is good because if you don't know that answer then it doesn't make you look like the smartest model. Britt: Right. Trudi: So, you want to be able to know the information that they might ask in your book or, "Where did you shoot it?" Or, "When did you shoot it?" They're trying to get a conversation going, but there's not many questions they can ask you when they don't know you. They just want to kind of know things about your book. Then they might say things between themselves that are related to the job that might not make any sense to you and that might not have anything to do with you. So, you can't really let that effect you. It's not about how quickly they look through your book. They're fast. Especially in New York and Paris, and Milan, it's fast. They don't have a lot of time. Britt: Yeah. Trudi: So, the decision is made after. You're never going to know right then anyway, so it really doesn't matter. You just have to do the best you can, assume you're getting the job and walk out. That's pretty much what happens. Britt: They might not show any emotion at all. You can't take that as a no. They could be happy, they could be sad that day. They could be really annoyed. But just go in confidently and, hopefully, you'll get the job. Trudi: It's not your job to read them. Britt: No. Trudi: It's their job to read you. Britt: Exactly. Trudi: So, that's how it works.

I've been going to fashion week for several years and thought I would share some of my photography tips to help you get the images you want, whether it be for your blog, instagram, or just for fun. Oobah Butler of fake shed restaurant fame is back and this time he’s turned his attention to the world of fashion. Paris Fashion week is iconic amongst A-Listers and fashion inner circles. It's the place where you find all the next big trends, the crème de la crème of fashion weeks. Georgio Peviani was getting loads of attention at PFW. Buyers from Milan wanted his denim in their stores, the inner-circle wanted him at their showrooms and A-Listers partied with him at night. But the man doesn't actually exist.. does he? This is the time Oobah Butler faked his way into Paris Fashion Week. WATCH NEXT: The Shed at Dulwich was the number one rated restaurant in London, but the main problem was that it didn't exist - https://vice.video/2KbdNzI Click here to subscribe to VICE: http://bit.ly/Subscribe-to-VICE Check out our full video catalog: http://bit.ly/VICE-Videos Videos, daily editorial and more: http://vice.com More videos from the VICE network: https://www.fb.com/vicevideo Click here to get the best of VICE daily: http://bit.ly/1SquZ6v Like VICE on Facebook: http://fb.com/vice Follow VICE on Twitter: http://twitter.com/vice Follow us on Instagram: http://instagram.com/vice Download VICE on iOS: http://apple.co/28Vgmqz Download VICE on Android: http://bit.ly/28S8Et0

I'm Trudi Tapscott, and I think that one of the things that has had a history in walking and runway and fashion shows is the turn. And if you go back in history and look at shows from different decades, which I highly recommend, and if you go and look at a Halston show, or a show from the '70s, even into the '80s, you will see a lot of movement. There is a lot of turns, the shows look very different than what they have evolved to now. So, sometimes when you are doing a show, like maybe a charity show somewhere in America, they want to see something a little bit fancy, where you actually do make a full circle turn, for shows in major markets now currently, that's not really happening. The turn is very simple. Everything in the model's movement of her body is very simple. The idea is to keep the focus of the eye on the clothes, not on the model. So, not anything that is too distracting. So, that's why sometimes when you see shows, they are not smiling, there is no facial expression, there is nothing friendly about them, because all any designer really wants you to look at are the clothes. That is the focus, that's the main thing. So, that's why they don't do any fancy turns. It's a very simple, they don't do anything in the middle of the runway unless they are asked to, and they do something very simple at the end, just like that. Sometimes they don't every turn around, sometimes it is just a U-turn at the end, where the whole line of models just makes a U-turn and that's all that's asked of them. So, sometimes it depends on the staging that might change, but really, currently, right now, we don't do any fancy turns. There is really not anything that happens like that in New York or Paris or Milan or London, any major market with a major designer, it's a very simple walk. You really shine the clothes, that's the focus.

Fashion models make it look so effortless, but strutting your stuff in 4-inch heels is no easy feat. Models walk in different ways, and the style of walking will depend on the clothes being modelled and the general tone of the show. However, these are some general tips on walking like a catwalk model. When learning these techniques, make sure you're wearing comfortable clothes and have a long enough room to stride up and down in. The fashion industry claims it is being unfairly pillaged for the ‘size 0’ phenomenon. But self regulation has done little to weed out emaciated models. “They have to understand that being thin is our job”, states one size 0 model. But following the death of anorexic model, Ana Carolina Reston, designers are coming under pressure not to use skinny models. Spain banned ultra-thin models from Madrid Fashion Week after complaints they encouraged anorexia. “We didn’t want teenagers to think excessive slimness is a model of beauty”, explains organizer Cuca Solana. But other fashion capitals refuse to follow Spain’s lead. “The whole size 0 thing has come from Hollywood not the catwalks”, complains Hilary Riva, Chief Executive of London Fashion Week. “It’s too simplistic to blame fashion.” SBS Australia - Ref.3432 Journeyman Pictures is your independent source for the world's most powerful films, exploring the burning issues of today. From run-ins with famous friends to getting pulled over by the cops, this is Riverdale actress Cami Mendes' New York Fashion Week video diary. A Monday off from work isn't typical for actress Camila Mendes—at least not in September. "We shoot #Riverdale nine months out of the year," she tells ELLE.com. But when the actress who plays Manhattan fashionista Veronica Lodge was presented with the opportunity to attend her first ever New York Fashion Week, Mendes made it work. If only for two days, she was heading to NYC to take in the shows. First up? Prabal Gurung. Excited for her "Kendall Jenner moment," the actress went with a red turtleneck and pink trousers, making the most of her debut. On day two, she managed to squeeze in an appearance at a 12:00 p.m. Zimmermann show, before jetting off to the airport to make her 4 p.m. flight back to Vancouver—and back to the "no red lipstick rule" her character Veronica Lodge abides by.
