The "Secret" Behind 13th Chords!
A chord substitution is an act where one chord is "swapped out" for a "similar sounding" chord. One particular substitution that seems to work (in the key of C major) is swapping Fm for Bb9, or for FmMaj9, or Dm7b5. Why do all of these seem to "work"? Well, I guess you'll have to watch this video to find out ;)

Chord Voicing Secrets: Cluster Chords
In this chord voicing lesson we will learn about cluster chords. Simply put, cluster chords are chords in which the notes are "bunched together". In a more theoretical approach, these are chords with notes 1 or 2 semitones apart. The resulting voicings have a tight, modern feel to them particularly suitable for jazz and film compositions. You will learn about several possible cluster voicings, where to use them and how they sound. Who is this Lesson Aimed At? This lesson is aimed at piano players interested in expanding their major chord voicing vocabulary. Although some theoretical concepts are discussed throughout the video, YOU DO NOT NEED TO KNOW ANY THEORY to make use of the forms presented! Just watch, listen and copy what I play, and enjoy! These chord voicings are not difficult to play and do not require any special piano technique. Don't forget, to use these ideas for piano you must practice, Practice, PRACTICE. Transpose each and every major chord voicing form to all possible chords. Be able to play all forms immediately, and you will be rewarded with the ability to switch between them on the fly, as well as begin to think for yourself on ways for coming up with additional ideas! More About Chord Voicings from Wikipedia: "In music composition and arranging, a voicing is the instrumentation and vertical spacing and ordering of the pitches in a chord (which notes are on the top or in the middle, which ones are doubled, which octave each is in, and which instruments or voices perform each). Which note is on the bottom determines the inversion. Voicing is 'the manner in which one distributes, or spaces, notes and chords among the various instruments" and spacing or "simultaneous vertical placement of notes in relation to each other.'" Guitar Chords Buzzing - How to Fix it
If you would like to gain full access to all our Guitar Teaching Materials please visit the Secret Guitar Teacher Site and take a free tour: http://www.secretguitarteacher.com/youtube/ssb/Beginner/4BTIwwRYYpE/129864916-whats-that-buzzing-sound.php Here's an abridged transcript of the video: Do your notes and chords sound a bit like this? When what you would rather hear is perhaps more something like this This can be quite frustrating. You’re shown this diagram for a C chord for example And you dutifully do what it says… Placing your first finger here, your second finger here and your third finger here strum the chord …or pick it… and it sounds nothing like what you hear when you are listening to more experienced players. Well the devil’s in the detail. And in this case there are three likely causes of the problem. Firstly it is important to know just what you are trying to do when you place your fingers on a string on the fret board. You are trying to pin the string firmly enough against the fretwire to stop the string vibrating cleanly at that point. It’s vital to appreciate that it’s the contact between fretwire and string that counts. So my first tip is to always place your fingers as close to the fretwire as possible. That means here… …rather than here . Notice even a fraction of an inch difference and the sound quality deteriorates . Beginners often try to get round this problem of optimum finger positioning by pressing extremely hard with all their fingers all the time. …Notice the finger nails going a deathly white colour…as I drain all the blood from them with the force I am trying to apply. This is one of the reasons beginners so often complain that their fingers are hurting! So - practice with each chord shape you have learnt. Firstly getting the fingers right behind the frets and then adjusting the amount of pressure to use on each finger. The right amount of pressure is the least that you can get away with and still get a nice sound. The next problem that causes string buzz is when one finger unintentionally interferes with a neighbouring string. That’s what is happening here with this open G string. It is just being lightly touched by the underside of the finger on the D string . And the remedy for this is normally just to be a bit more precise with the positioning of this finger. Notice that I have a bit of room this side so a slight adjustment in this direction ensures that the G string is freed up to ring cleanly Now, we all have different sizes and shapes of fingertip. So sometimes it is necessary to hunt around a bit for the optimum angle of approach to make sure the finger doesn’t interfere with the strings on either side. A good tip is to experiment with using more the edge of the tip of the finger tuck your elbow in to get the fingers pointing more along the fret board like this. A less common cause of the buzzing problem can come from the edge of the hand. This is almost always going to affect just the top string on the guitar. And the remedy here is just to rotate the whole hand position, pushing out the wrist like this… so that you allow some fresh air and daylight between the hand and the neck of the guitar. OK so the end result of attending to each of these three possible causes of the problem is nice clean chords - yep even C chords and F chords can sound clean. And playing the strings one at a time like this is the best way to test that you have the optimum fingering position for each chord shape. Listen as you practice and keep making minute adjustments until making clean chords and notes becomes a habit. Diminished Chords - How to Play them on the Guitar
If you would like to gain full access to all our Guitar Teaching Materials please visit the Secret Guitar Teacher Site and take a free tour: http://secretguitarteacher.com/youtube/ssb/Advanced/b-rg_cW8AzA/112932812-how-do-i-make-diminished-chords-1.php SECRET SOUND BITE A1 How do I make diminished chords? Diminished chords, or to give them their proper name - diminished seventh chords come in useful in several different ways. But unless you are an old hand, you may feel that they are rather complicated to understand, and therefore difficult to learn to use. Well luckily, nothing could be further from the truth! Because, although it is fair to say that the theoretical aspects of diminished chords sound complicated when we guitar teachers try to explain them, in practical terms they are actually nice and easy to work with. Making them, finding them, and using them to spice up your chord sequences, as well as improvising over them, are all easy, if you know a few simple tricks. In this, the first in a series of short lessons on diminished and half-diminished chords, I want to show you the relationship between the dominant seventh chord and the diminished seventh chord. Because I think understanding this alone, is half the battle won. Let me show you a neat trick. There are just three steps to this. First, take a look at these familiar beginner’s chords: A7... D7th … and E7th… Now to keep this simple, make sure you are playing them as four-note chords like this… Notice that in this configuration there is just one of each of the chord tones - root 3rd, 5th and flatted 7th - and if you have studied our lessons on the CAGED system, you won’t be surprised that the root note for this A shaped chord is found on the A string. Likewise, for this D7 shape the root note is on the D string. And for the E shape the root note is on the E string. So step 1 is to play one of these dominant seventh chord shapes. And step 2 is: locate the root note. Step 3 is simply to sharpen the root note By doing this we turn A7 into A#dim7th Or D7th into D#dim7th Or E7th into Fdim7th And as these are all movable chord shapes, this means we suddenly have the means of playing dim7th chords rooted off any of the bottom three strings. We just have to get into the habit of thinking of the dominant 7th chord rooted one semitone or half step below the chord we are looking for. Then sharpening the root note. So here are three possible ways of playing C# dim 7 for example. In the next Secret Soundbite in this series, we’ll take a quick look at the theory behind this relationship. But I have to warn you that, as mentioned in the introduction to this lesson, the theory is not as straightforward as the practice! So I recommend spending a bit of time just working with this trick and making yourself familiar with these three movable diminished shapes and learning to use that connection between the dominant 7th shape one fret lower. If you found this little video useful, please click on the ‘Like’ button and do feel free to share the video with your friends. Normally we would play these chords something like this but to help us better integrate the melody - we need to change the C7 chord to this shape played up at the 8th fret. This will make more sense next lesson. So here are our first two chord shapes. Next chord is an FMaj7 - note this is not the same as an F7 - it's a jazzier sounding chord and actually nice and easy to play. Notice we use the little triangle symbol to distinguish from the F7 chord. And this chord is followed by an E7sus4 which I want you to note is played with 2nd and 3rd fingers and that is changed to E7 by adding the first finger and taking off the 3rd finger like this. So that first line altogether Am C7 FMaj7 E7sus4 and E7 and that is played through twice. Up to you whether you choose to play this with a pick or fingerstyle. Ok let's look at the second half of the sequence. After playing the first line twice we play a series of Am chords that sound like this. Am, we have already covered the next chord is Am natural 7th followed by Am7. Here are the shapes. Then for Am6 we use a particular fingering which, you'll see in the next lesson, will better suit the melody. This is then followed by FM7 which we have already covered then an E7, buit again we want to select a specific fingering for this. Then it's back to Am and the E7sus4 E7 routine we used at the end of the first section. Here are the chord shape diagrams for the special fingerings of Am6 and E7 that we are using. And here is the full at slow tempo... and at more or less full tempo. I'll leave you to practice that as much as possible - the better you know those shapes the easier you'll find the final stage of this process. And that will be where, in the next sound bite, I'll show you how to integrate the melody with these chords.

Guitar songs with just two chords
If you would like to gain full access to all our Guitar Teaching Materials please visit the Secret Guitar Teacher Site and take a free tour: http://www.secretguitarteacher.com/youtube/ssb.php?lp_id=406 Here's the video transcript: What's the point in playing songs that have just two or three chords? Isn't it better to learn as many chords as possible so you that can become a great guitarist sooner? Well, in my experience, getting too hungry to learn new chords is often the way beginner guitarists hold themselves back in their development. With upwards of 40,000 chord shapes playable on the guitar, you are never going to use more than a tiny fraction of available chords over your guitar-playing career! What will really make a difference to how good you sound as a guitarist is HOW you use chords. And the best way to develop quality of sound, and all the little details of technique that go towards lending your playing real finesse, is to play songs with very few chords so that you are forced to focus in on how you make those chords sound. So, in this lesson, I'm going to introduce you to two completely different songs that each use just two chords. Here's a great song from the early seventies - A Horse With No Name by the three-piece band America. The first chord is a straight forward Em, probably best played with second and third fingers to make the change to the second chord easier 3. The second chord is a version of D with the note F# in the bass. You might hear this called a first inversion D major or perhaps more commonly simply D slash F# or D over F#. And that's all there is to the chords - hard to think of anything easier! But there is quite a bit more to the strumming hand. The distinctive rhythm of the song comes partly from a two bar pattern that uses a bit of bass note separation and muting technique. Notice how bar 1 starts with the bass note hit separately and also how the emphasis switches to the upstrokes in the second bar of each pair. This sort of rhythm is deceptively hard for beginners to get, but I can tell you that it doesn't help to try and be too exact in how you copy it. Rather, I recommend 'homing in on it' by experimenting and careful listening. The only other tip I'll leave you with on this song is that the muting, is best achieved with both hands, palm muting at the strumming end...And a tiny bit of gripping and relaxing of the chord shape at this end as well Note this isn't lifting the fingers off the strings - it's relaxing the fingers so that the strings just come away from the fret wires that kills the sound neatly. My second choice of song for this lesson is an old blues tune written by Ellington Jordan and first recorded by Etta James in the mid sixties It's called 'I'd rather Go Blind' The chords are G and Am . Please note that if you want to play along to the original recording which is in A, you'll need a capo at fret two to make it sound in tune. We're playing this in 6/8 time which is counted as two lots of three like this. 123 456...123 456 though you may find it easier to think of each bar as two beats. It's fine to count it 1 and a 2 and a.. The beauty of a slow song like this is that there is plenty of space for you to experiment with ornamentation and a real chance for you to begin to develop some individual style to your playing. Here are a few ideas that I have found have crept into the way I might play this. So, in answer to our title question: 'What's the point in playing songs with really simple chord sequences?' You can perhaps see how once your attention can come off the problem of constantly trying to remember what chord shape comes next, and how best to play that shape; you begin to listen more to what you are playing. By concentrating on the sound, you naturally find yourself developing real guitar playing skills that you can then carry forward into the more complex chord sequences at a later stage.

Major Ending Chords - Gypsy Jazz Guitar Secrets
Download your free issue of Gypsy Jazz Guitar Secrets here: http://www.GypsyJazzSecrets.com and check out my Gypsy Jazz Songbook Series here: http://www.RobinNolanTeaches.com Major Ending Chords It's always nice to end a tune you're playing with a nice ending chord and in this video I show you some simple options that will sound great. 1. Just play the root note nice and cleanly and in time - never fails and is a very simple option 2. Try using the 7-5 chord for a nice jazzy ending. In the video I show you this in G and in C. 3. In G you can use the harmonics on the 5th fret. 4. In C the harmonics on the 7th fret give a flat 5 sound - pretty cool. 5. Try this chord for C CEADF# this is a cool sound and think of it like a D major triad over C. In G move that 3rd fret shape up to the 10th to have an A major triad over G. GBEAC# There's many more but this will give you some starters to get going. Remember it's so important to end well. Whatever has happened in the song might not matter with a hip and cool ending chord played nicely in time by the band. It’s all about learning and absorbing these small tasty bite size ideas into your playing. Before you know it you’ve got a ton of great stuff at your fingertips! Swing Out!
