jQuery video tutorial 10 - jQuery CSS Method

11:07
jQuery video tutorial 10 - jQuery CSS Method jQuery CSS() Method: The jQuery CSS() method is used to set one or more CSS style(s) to the selected HTML element(s). It is also used to get the value of a CSS style applied to the selected HTML element(s). Setting the single CSS style or property: Syntax: $(selector).css(“css-property”,”value”); It helps us to select any html element(s) targeted by the given selector and apply the given CSS property. Ex: $(“#firstp”).css(“background-color”,”red”); It selects any html element(s) whose id attribute value is set to firstp and applies the CSS property background color to red . Setting multiple CSS styles or properties: Syntax: $(selector).css({“css-property1”:”value1”,” css-property2”:”value2”,….}); It helps us to select any html element(s) targeted by the given selector and apply the given set of CSS properties. Ex: $(“#firstp”).css({“background-color”:”green”,”color”:”white”}); It selects any html element(s) whose id attribute value is set to firstp and applies the CSS properties background color green and text color white . Getting the value of a single CSS style or property: Syntax: $(selector).css(“css property”); It helps us to select any html element(s) targeted by the given selector and return the value of a given CSS property. Ex: alert($(“#firstp”).css(“background-color”)); It selects any html element(s) whose id attribute value is set to firstp and returns the value of background-color CSS property. The current implementation of the CSS() method in jQuery allows us to set multiple CSS properties to the selected HTML element(s), but only allows us to get one CSS property at a time. ========================================= Follow the link for next video: jQuery video tutorial 11 - jQuery selectors https://youtu.be/HpRdrhCq158 Follow the link for previous video: jQuery video tutorial 09 - jQuery syntax https://youtu.be/UvMuWgBzIHc =========================================

jQuery class selector

Notice div1 has 2 classes - small and big. [html] [head] [title][/title] [script src="Scripts/jquery-1.11.2.js"][/script] [script type="text/javascript"] $(document).ready(function () { $('.small').css('border', '5px solid red'); }); [/script] [/head] [body] [div class="small big"] DIV 1 [/div] [br /] [div class="small"] DIV 2 [/div] [/body] [/html] Selects all elements that has both the classes - small and big. There should be no space between the class names. [script type="text/javascript"] $(document).ready(function () { $('.small.big').css('border', '5px solid red'); }); [/script] If you have a space between the two class names then we are trying to find descendants, i.e. find elements with class big that are descendants of an element with class small. [html] [head] [title][/title] [script src="Scripts/jquery-1.11.2.js"][/script] [script type="text/javascript"] $(document).ready(function () { $('.small .big').css('border', '5px solid red'); }); [/script] [/head] [body] [div class="small big"] DIV 1 [/div] [br /] [div class="small"] DIV 2 [div class="big"] DIV 3 [/div] [/div] [/body] [/html] Another way to selects all elements that has both the classes - small and big is by using filter method. But this approach is slower because it will first create a list of objects with class "small" and then removes elements that does not have class "big" [script type="text/javascript"] $(document).ready(function () { $('.small').filter('.big').css('border', '5px solid red'); }); [/script]

To select the elements by tag name use jQuery Element Selector Syntax : $(element) $('td') // Selects all td elements $('div a') // Select all anchor elements that are descendants of div element $('div, span, a') // Selects all div, span and anchor elements Alerts the total count of td elements on the page [script type="text/javascript"] $(document).ready(function () { alert($('td').length); }); [/script] Selects all the tr elements on the page and changes their background colour to red [script type="text/javascript"] $(document).ready(function () { $('tr').css('background-Color', 'red'); }); [/script] Alerts the HTML content of the table [script type="text/javascript"] $(document).ready(function () { alert($('table').html()); }); [/script] Alerts the HTML content of each table row [script type="text/javascript"] $(document).ready(function () { $('table tr').each(function () { alert($(this).html()); }); }); [/script] Select and changes the background colour of all the div, span and anchor elements [script type="text/javascript"] $(document).ready(function () { $('div, span, a').css('background-Color', 'yellow'); }); [/script] Select all anchor elements that are descendants of div element [html] [head] [title][/title] [script src="jquery-1.11.2.js"][/script] [script type="text/javascript"] $(document).ready(function () { $('div a').css('background-Color', 'yellow'); }); [/script] [/head] [body] [div] [a href="http://pragimtech.com"]PragimTech[/a] [/div] [br /] [a href="http://microsoft.com"]Microsoft[/a] [/body] [/html] Changes the background color of even rows to gray and odd rows to yellow in both the tables. [script type="text/javascript"] $(document).ready(function () { $('tr:even').css('background-Color', 'gray'); $('tr:odd').css('background-Color', 'yellow'); }); [/script] To change the background color of even rows to gray and odd rows to yellow just for one of the table, use #id selector along with element selector. [script type="text/javascript"] $(document).ready(function () { $('#table1 tr:even').css('background-Color', 'gray'); $('#table1 tr:odd').css('background-Color', 'yellow'); }); [/script]

jQuery #id selector

10:53
Link for all dot net and sql server video tutorial playlists http://www.youtube.com/user/kudvenkat/playlists Link for slides, code samples and text version of the video http://csharp-video-tutorials.blogspot.com/2015/03/jquery-id-selector.html In this video we will discuss 1. What are jQuery selectors 2. Different selectors in jQuery 3. #id selector in jquery What are jQuery selectors One of the most important concept in jQuery is selectors. jQuery selectors allow you to select and manipulate HTML elements. Different selectors in jQuery jQuery selectors allow you to select html elements in the DOM by 1. Element ID 2. Element Tag Name 3. Element Class Name 4. Element attribute 5. Element Attribute values and many more Id selector in jquery To find an HTML element by ID, use the jQuery #id selector Example : The following example finds button with ID button1 and attaches the click event handler. [html] [head] [title][/title] [script src="jquery-1.11.2.js"][/script] [script type="text/javascript"] $(document).ready(function () { $('#button1').click(function () { alert('jQuery Tuorial'); }); }); [/script] [/head] [body] [input id="button1" type="button" value="Click Me" /] [/body] [/html] Changes the background colour of the button to yellow $(document).ready(function () { $('#button1').css('background-color', 'yellow'); }); Important points to remember about jQuery #id selector 1. jQuery #id selector uses the JavaScript document.getElementById() function 2. jQuery #id selector is the most efficient among all jQuery selectors. If you know the id of an element that you want to find, then always use the #id selector. 3. HTML element IDs must be unique on the page. jQuery #id selector returns only the first element, if you have 2 or more elements with the same ID. [html] [head] [title][/title] [script src="jquery-1.11.2.js"][/script] [script type="text/javascript"] $(document).ready(function () { $('#button1').css('background-Color', 'yellow'); }); [/script] [/head] [body] [input id="button1" type="button" value="Click Me" /] [input id="button1" type="button" value="Click Button" /] [/body] [/html] 4. JavaScript's document.getElementById() function throws an error if the element with the given id is not found, where as jQuery #id selector will not throw an error. To check if an element is returned by the #id selector use length property. [html] [head] [title][/title] [script src="jquery-1.11.2.js"][/script] [script type="text/javascript"] $(document).ready(function () { if ($('#button1').length ] 0) { alert('Element found') } else { alert('Element not found') } }); [/script] [/head] [body] [input id="button1" type="button" value="Click Me" /] [/body] [/html] 5. JavaScript's document.getElementById() and jQuery(#id) selector are not the same. document.getElementById() returns a raw DOM object where as jQuery('#id') selector returns a jQuery object that wraps the DOM object and provides jQuery methods. This is the reason you are able to call jQuery methods like css(), click() on the object returned by jQuery. To get the underlying DOM object from a jQuery object write $('#id')[0] 6. document.getElementById() is faster than jQuery('#id') selector. Use document.getElementById() over jQuery('#id') selector unless you need the extra functionality provided by the jQuery object.

Responsive navigation with an fun animated dropdown using CSS clip-path

50:43
In this video I look at how to create a responsive menu using jQuery. It’s a bit of a long video where we build out the menu from scratch with HTML, then styling the menu with CSS, before finally using a bit of jQuery to get it to work. Once it's all set up and working, I use a CSS clipping path to give it a bit of a cool animation for when it toggles in and out. I also create my own hamburger menu using pseudo elements and some CSS, creating a custom animation for it with another CSS class and a bit more jQuery. If you’d like to skip to any specific part, the times for all the steps are below, and if you want to play with the code, it's on Codepen - http://codepen.io/kevinpowell/pen/PWNwZm Starting at 02:20 I look at simply building out a vertical menu. At 12:20 I add the hamburger menu At 19:50 I use a little simply bit of jQuery to get the mobile menu to toggle on and off Starting at 24:50 I look at animating the hamburger menu. Then at 28:46 I look at adding in some icons with Font Awesome With the mobile version done, at 37:50 I add a media query so that it is a normal, horizontal navigation on larger screens. Then at 42:00, with the whole thing wrapped up, I change the animation to use clip-path to make the toggling animation a little more interesting, and then fix up a few little loose ends. --- Music by Chillhop: http://youtube.com/chillhopdotcom Mo Anando - In Bloom: https://soundcloud.com/moanando If you have your own channel, check out Chillhop for some awesome music.

We discussed how to do exactly the same thing using raw JavaScript in Part 41 of JavaScript tutorial. When you click on the image thumnail, the respective image should be displayed in the main section of the page. For the purpose of this demo we will be using the images that can be found on any windows machine at the following path. C:\Users\Public\Pictures\Sample Pictures Step 1 : Open Visual Studio and create a new empty asp.net web application project. Name it Demo. Step 2 : Right click on the Project Name in Solution Explorer in Visual Studio and create a new folder with name = Images. Step 3 : Copy images from C:\Users\Public\Pictures\Sample Pictures to Images folder in your project. Step 4 : Right click on the Project Name in Solution Explorer in Visual Studio and add a new HTML Page. It should automatically add HTMLPage1.htm. Step 5 : Add a reference to the download jQuery file. I am using jquery-1.11.2.js version for this demo. Step 6 : Copy and paste the following HTML and jQuery code in HTMLPage1.htm page. Replace < with LESSTHAN symbol and > with GREATERTHAN symbol <html> <head> <style type="text/css"> .imgStyle { width: 100px; height: 100px; border: 3px solid grey; } </style> <script src="jquery-1.11.2.js"></script> <script type="text/javascript"> $(document).ready(function () { $('#divId img').on({ mouseover: function () { $(this).css({ 'cursor': 'hand', 'border-Color': 'red' }); }, mouseout: function () { $(this).css({ 'cursor': 'default', 'border-Color': 'grey' }); }, click: function () { var imageURL = $(this).attr('src'); $('#mainImage').fadeOut(500, function () { $(this).attr('src', imageURL); }).fadeIn(500); } }); }); </script> </head> <body> <img id="mainImage" style="border:3px solid grey" src="/Images/Hydrangeas.jpg" height="500" width="540" /> <br /> <div id="divId"> <img class="imgStyle" src="/Images/Hydrangeas.jpg" /> <img class="imgStyle" src="/Images/Jellyfish.jpg" /> <img class="imgStyle" src="/Images/Koala.jpg" /> <img class="imgStyle" src="/Images/Penguins.jpg" /> <img class="imgStyle" src="/Images/Tulips.jpg" /> </div> </body> </html> In our next video, we will discuss how to make this image gallery a bit more efficient using the concept of event bubbling.

5 - change css properties with jquery, change the border and background

05:21
You can change and modify the border and background CSS properties using jquery's ".css" method. This video will show you how to: a) change html element's appearance with jquery, b) make webpage objects move across the screen by adjusting the absolute positioning properties left, right, top, and bottom. You can then "animate" CSS properties to give the appearance of movement. #javascript #jquery #learntocode #programmer #programming

10:51
How to animate elements using jQuery - Learn jQuery front-end programming. In this lesson we will learn how to animate HTML elements by manipulating the CSS styling. Download lesson files: http://mmtuts.net/course.php?c=jquery&l=7 -- mmtuts is a YouTube channel that focuses on teaching beginner and advanced courses in various multimedia related skills. We plan to make tutorials available on programming, video production, animation, graphic design, and on software such as the Adobe Creative Cloud programs. jQuery for beginners is a how to series that teaches the jQuery framework to people who are just starting out learning programming. The course teaches how jQuery scripting can be made easy and teaches how to build many features on websites through behavior using jQuery. Creating behavior on websites with jQuery is easy and should not be seen as otherwise, which is why we want to explain the language in a easy to understand way for beginners. If you have suggestions on new courses, or specific lessons within existing courses you would like to see, then feel welcome to submit them in the comment section or in a private message. ALL suggestions will be seen, but not all will be replied to since we get quite a few every day.

jQuery each function

Use of jQuery each function 2. How to exit from each function in jQuery 3. Implicit iteration in jQuery 4. Performance considerations when using jquery each function jQuery each function is used to iterate over the items in a collection. For each item in the collection the anonymous function is called. The index of the element and the element itself are passed to the anonymous function. $('li').each(function (index, element) { alert(index + ' : ' + $(element).text()); }); To refer to the current element that we are iterating over you can also use this keyword. $('li').each(function (index) { alert(index + ' : ' + $(this).text()); }); If you don't care about the index and just need the text of the list item, then you can get rid of the index parameter $('li').each(function () { alert($(this).text()); }); Replace < with LESSTHAN symbol and > with GREATERTHAN symbol How to exit from each function in jQuery : To exit from each function, return false. <script type="text/javascript"> $(document).ready(function () { $('li').each(function () { if ($(this).text() == 'UK') { return false; } alert($(this).text()); }); }); </script> Implicit iteration in jQuery : The $('li') selector returns all list item elements. Notice that we are calling the css() jquery function on the jquery collection itself. In this case, css() method implicitly iterates over each element in the entire collection. <html> <head> <title></title> <script src="jquery-1.11.2.js"></script> <script type="text/javascript"> $(document).ready(function () { $('li').css('color', 'red'); }); </script> </head> <body style="font-family:Arial"> <ul> <li>US</li> <li>India</li> <li>UK</li> <li>Canada</li> <li>Australia</li> </ul> </body> </html> There is no need to explicitly iterate over each element in the collection. Most jQuery methods implicitly iterate over the entire collection. <script type="text/javascript"> $(document).ready(function () { $('li').each(function () { $(this).css('color', 'red'); }); }); </script> Performance considerations when using jquery each function <html> <head> <title></title> <script src="jquery-1.11.2.js"></script> <script type="text/javascript"> $(document).ready(function () { $('li').each(function () { $('#divResult').html($('#divResult').html() + '<br/>' + $(this).text()) }); }); </script> </head> <body style="font-family:Arial"> <ul> <li>US</li> <li>India</li> <li>UK</li> <li>Canada</li> <li>Australia</li> </ul> <div id="divResult"></div> </body> </html> From a performance standpoint, there are 2 problems with the above code. 1. jQuery needs to search the DOM for div element with id = divResult, for each list item in the collection. Since there are 5 list items, jquery searches the DOM 5 times for the same div element with id = divResult. The performance of the above code can be improved by caching the divResult element. 2. The DOM element (div element with id = divResult) is being updated on each iteration. Again this is bad for performance. To improve the performance build a string variable with the required data on each iteration of the loop. Once the loop has completed, update the DOM element with the value that is present in the string varibale. This will ensure that the DOM element is updated only once and this is much better for performance. The following is much better from a performance standpoint. <script type="text/javascript"> $(document).ready(function () { var result = ''; $('li').each(function () { result += '<br/>' + $(this).text(); }); $('#divResult').html(result); }); </script>

It applies to window objects, but also to scrollable frames and elements with the overflow CSS property set to scroll. In the following exampe, notice that the div element overflow style is set to scroll. Playing with jQuery and the CSS class selector

09:41
The CSS Class selector is very useful when you need to manage or apply CSS styles to multiple elements. Additionally the CSS Selector also has performance advantages and can be overloaded. All of this becomes more exciting, when jQuery is used to add/remove or toggle classes. In this screencast, we'll take a look at how jQuery makes it easy to add/remove or toggle classes based on user events such as mouse-clicks and mouse-overs. Follow along with the code sample provided at: https://github.com/learnable-content/playing-with-jquery-and-class-selectors This screencast is a sample of my course - Introduction to jQuery https://learnable.com/courses/introduction-to-jquery-2884 on Learnable. This course is designed to get you up and running with jQuery with practical and easy to use examples. If you like this screencast, then head over to Learnable.com to join this course today!

jquery tooltip widget

08:32
Link for all dot net and sql server video tutorial playlists https://www.youtube.com/user/kudvenkat/playlists?sort=dd&view=1 Link for slides, code samples and text version of the video http://csharp-video-tutorials.blogspot.com/2015/06/jquery-tooltip-widget.html In this video we will discuss jQuery tooltip widget with examples. To get a tooltip without using jQuery all you do is set the title attribute. At this point when we hover over the element the content that is specified as the value for the title attribute will be displayed as the tooltip. jQuery Tooltip widget replaces native tooltip and allows lot of customization 1. Display other content than just the title, like inline footnotes or extra content retrieved via Ajax. 2. Customize the positioning, e.g., to center the tooltip above elements. 3. Add extra styling to customize the appearance, for warning or error fields. In the following example label element display the native tooltip where as the textbox displays jQuery tooltip HTML <label id="lblName" for="txtName" title="Full Name">Name</label> <input id="txtName" type="text" title="Your full name as it appears in paasport" /> jQuery $('#txtName').tooltip(); In the following example we are calling tooltip() function on the document object, so this will display jQuery tooltip for all the elements that have title attribute $(document).tooltip(); You can also use the content option, to specify the content for tooltip. When both title attribute and content options are specified, the content specified by the content option will override the content specified by the title attribute. HTML <input id="txtName" type="text" title="Your full name as it appears in paasport" /> jQuery $('#txtName').tooltip({ content : '<u>content option</u> tooltip overriding title attribute tooltip' }); content option supports multiple types. string or a function. HTML <input id="txtName" type="text" title="Your full name as it appears in paasport" /> jQuery $(document).ready(function () { $('#txtName').tooltip({ content: toolTipFunction }); function toolTipFunction() { return 'Tooltip from a function'; } }); Set track option to true to make the tooltip follow the mouse HTML <input id="txtName" type="text" title="Your full name as it appears in paasport" /> jQuery $('#txtName').tooltip({ track: true }); show and hide options can be used to animate the showing and hiding of the tooltip. Both of these options support multiple types. For the detailed description please check the following jquery documentation page http://api.jqueryui.com/tooltip In the following example we are using a JavaScript object, to specify the animation duration, effect and delay while the tooltip is being shown and hidden HTML <input id="txtName" type="text" title="Your full name as it appears in paasport" /> jQuery $('#txtName').tooltip({ show : {delay:10, duration:500, effect: 'slideDown'}, hide: { delay: 10, duration: 500, effect: 'slideUp' } });

jquery floating div

We want the div element in the sidebar to be floating and always visible as we scroll down the page. Example : In this example we are using position() and scrollTop() functions. The object returned by position() function has top and left properties, which can be used to know the current top and left positions (coordinates). We are using this function to find the top position of the div element that we want to keep floating as we scroll down. To get the current vertical position of the scroll bar, we are using scrollTop() function. As we scroll and when the current vertical position of the scroll bar becomes GREATER THAN the top position of the div element, then we want the div element to start floating. To do this set position style to fixed. A fixed position element is positioned relative to the browser window. So as you scroll down it will be floating in the browser window. If the current vertical position of the scroll bar becomes LESS THAN the top position of the div element, then we don't want the div element to float, so we set position style to relative. A relative position element is positioned relative to itself. So if you set position to relative and top to 0, it will continue to stay where it is without floating. <html> <head> <script src="jquery-1.11.2.js"></script> <script type="text/javascript"> $(document).ready(function () { var floatingDiv = $("#divfloating"); var floatingDivPosition = floatingDiv.position(); $(window).scroll(function () { var scrollPosition = $(window).scrollTop(); if (scrollPosition >= floatingDivPosition.top) { floatingDiv.css({ 'position': 'fixed', 'top' : 3 }); } else { floatingDiv.css({ 'position': 'relative', 'top' : 0 }); } }); }); </script> </head> <body style="font-family:Arial;"> <table align="center" border="1" style="border-collapse:collapse"> <tr> <td style="width:500px"> Main Page Content </td> <td style="width:150px; vertical-align:top"> Side panel content <br /><br /> <div id="divfloating" style="background-color:silver; width:150px; height:150px"> Floating Div - Keeps floating as you scroll down the page </div> </td> </tr> </table> </body> </html>

This enables developers to create abstractions for low-level interaction and animation, advanced effects and high-level, themeable widgets. The modular approach to the jQuery library allows the creation of powerful dynamic web pages and Web applications. The set of jQuery core features—DOM element selections, traversal and manipulation—enabled by its selector engine (named "Sizzle" from v1.3), created a new "programming style", fusing algorithms and DOM data structures. This style influenced the architecture of other JavaScript frameworks like YUI v3 and Dojo, later stimulating the creation of the standard Selectors API.[6] Microsoft and Nokia bundle jQuery on their platforms.[7] Microsoft includes it with Visual Studio[8] for use within Microsoft's ASP.NET AJAX and ASP.NET MVC frameworks while Nokia has integrated it into the Web Run-Time widget development platform.[9] Overview[edit] jQuery, at its core, is a Document Object Model (DOM) manipulation library. The DOM is a tree-structure representation of all the elements of a Web page. jQuery simplifies the syntax for finding, selecting, and manipulating these DOM elements. For example, jQuery can be used for finding an element in the document with a certain property (e.g. all elements with an h1 tag), changing one or more of its attributes (e.g. color, visibility), or making it respond to an event (e.g. a mouse click). jQuery also provides a paradigm for event handling that goes beyond basic DOM element selection and manipulation. The event assignment and the event callback function definition are done in a single step in a single location in the code. jQuery also aims to incorporate other highly used JavaScript functionality (e.g. fade ins and fade outs when hiding elements, animations by manipulating CSS properties). The principles of developing with jQuery are: Separation of JavaScript and HTML: The jQuery library provides simple syntax for adding event handlers to the DOM using JavaScript, rather than adding HTML event attributes to call JavaScript functions. Thus, it encourages developers to completely separate JavaScript code from HTML markup. Brevity and clarity: jQuery promotes brevity and clarity with features like chainable functions and shorthand function names. Elimination of cross-browser incompatibilities: The JavaScript engines of different browsers differ slightly so JavaScript code that works for one browser may not work for another. Like other JavaScript toolkits, jQuery handles all these cross-browser inconsistencies and provides a consistent interface that works across different browsers. Extensibility: New events, elements, and methods can be easily added and then reused as a plugin. History[edit] jQuery was originally released in January 2006 at BarCamp NYC by John Resig and was influenced by Dean Edwards' earlier cssQuery library.[10][11] It is currently maintained by a team of developers led by Timmy Willison (with the jQuery selector engine, Sizzle, being led by Richard Gibson). jQuery also has an interesting software license history.[12] Originally licensed under the CC BY-SA 2.5, it was relicensed to the MIT license in 2006.[13] At the end of 2006, it was dual-licensed under GPL and MIT licenses.[14] As this led to some confusion, in 2012 the GPL was dropped and is now only licensed under the MIT license.[15]
