Watch a Private Eye Fact-check Detective Movies

04:52
In Vulture’s video series, Expert Witness, we ask scientists, historians, and other professionals to give Hollywood movies a good old-fashioned fact-check. Private eyes are one of Hollywood’s greatest legacies. From the likes stone-cold Philip Marlowe to bumbling clown Gene Parmesan, private detectives have long been a source of drama, comedy, and everything in between. But would a real PI really break through a window to get evidence? Would they really ride a bus to avoid being tailed? We talked to veteran New York City private investigator Michael McKeever to expose some of the biggest movie myths about private eyes.

Since its first publication in 1961, Private Eye has been a prominent critic and lampooner of public figures and entities that it deems guilty of any of the sins of incompetence, inefficiency, corruption, pomposity or self-importance and it has established itself as a thorn in the side of the British establishment. As of 2013, it is Britain's best-selling current affairs magazine,[2] and such is its long-term popularity and impact that many recurring in-jokes from Private Eye have entered popular culture. Private Eye Confidential

04:39
A new book from author Mike Spencer, a private investigator in Northern California. I created this video based on a 9 minute audio interview Mike had with an online magazine. After whittling it down to a workable 4 minutes, I created a storyboard based on scenes in the interview. I then created the characters and virtual sets in Adobe Illustrator, eventually separating and activating the elements in After Effects and timing the action to the voiceover. Added music and sound effects to help fill out the overall effect. It turned out to be 4 months of work from start to finish. amazon.com/Private-Eye-Confidential-Stories-Real/dp/0998720402

Magazine - Magic, Murder and the Weather (Private Remaster) - 08 Naked Eye

03:31
Forgotten Magazine album, post-John McGeoch's departure. Despite it's stature in the Magazine back catalogue it's a grower, it's certainly not "The Correct Use Of Soap" or the like, but it's not as bad as it initially can seem. For the most part, a really odd sound, like a tinny radio...! I was trying to achieve a more well-rounded low-end (let's get that bass guitar and bass drum out of that tinny radio!), taming the mids and opening up the detailed end of the treble spectrum... It's almost there but I also get the impression that some of the sound and mix choices were intentional... This has been a bit of a tricky one, this is the fourth version I've reworked so far. Tracks such as "Vigilance" had some odd things going on with overly boosted bass towards the end of the track (as if someone turned on 'bass boost' on the bass guitar!) as well as an effect that causes the cymbals to sound very splashy. "The Garden" also has a few issues with splashy cymbals... This is the best until my next attempt! SUPPORT THE MUSICIANS YOU LOVE, BUY THEIR MUSIC!

XCity: Audio slideshow: Ian Hislop on Private Eye, politics and satire

04:36
The cover star of this year's XCity magazine is satirist, editor and TV star Ian Hislop. Hislop began editing Private Eye in 1986 aged 25, when the magazine was printed in black and white, Margaret Thatcher was Prime Minister and today's party leaders were at school or university. Still firmly ensconced in the editor's chair, he has recently celebrated the Eye's 50th birthday, and has seen its circulation hit a 25-year high. In this exclusive audio slideshow featuring some of XCity's favourite Private Eye covers, Hislop reflects on how politicians - and those who lampoon them - have changed over his career. Listen to find out why he used to cancel readers' subscriptions, why the economic crisis may be helping his sales, and why Tony Blair is like an American televangelist. To read the full five-page interview with Ian Hislop, pick up a copy of XCity magazine - out this week. Photos courtesy of The Guardian. Private Eye covers used with kind permission of Ian Hislop.

Michael Coren Interviews Adam McQueen On Private Eye's 50th Anniversary

09:28
Michael Coren Interviews Adam McQueen On Private Eye's 50th Anniversary Private Eye Hits Half A Century Private Eye is Britain's first, most successful and indeed only fortnightly satirical magazine. Founded in 1961, it has somehow managed to survive for half a century during which it has consistently entertained, informed and irritated its readers. Over five turbulent decades it has developed its unique mix of jokes and journalism, comedy and campaigning, gags and gossip, laughter and libel, to cover the public life of the nation. From political plots to royal revelations, from City scandal to media manipulation, from legal lunacy to municipal madness. (That's enough alliteration -- Ed) This year, Britain's number one best-selling news and current affairs magazine marks its 50th anniversary on 25th October with a series of exciting events throughout the Autumn. Ian Hislop comments: "I do not want anyone to think that this is all just a huge celebration of ourselves. Our 50th year is a chance to look back and take a dispassionate view of how marvellous we are." http://www.private-eye.co.uk/pages.php?page=about_us
