To format your footnotes properly, following the guidelines set out in the Chicago Manual of Style, make sure you do the following things: • Use Times New Roman font, size 10. • Indent the first line of each footnote one tab space. • Single space your footnotes, but add a space between each one. • Add a period behind the numbers that start the footnotes. • Change the format of the numbering in the footnotes so that the numbers are not in superscript. Watch the video for a quick tutorial to see how to apply these changes. I made a video in March 2011 called how to draw a cool signature. It was really how to design a logo type of signature. Nearly 350,000 people have watched that video to date! Its obviously something that people have difficulty with. I know because they keep writing to me and tweeting and posting for me to do their signature for them. I can’t do your signature. A signature has to come from you. Start slowly and let your hand do what it wants to do. You may have to write your signature 5,000 times before you get it right! When you are happy with your signature, practice and practice until your hand can do it with out you having to think about it. That is when you have got your own recognisable signature. If you say you can't - it just means you can't be bothered to experiment and practice. Get a grip - just do it! lol :) With award winning illustrator, Shoo Rayner. This is a good presentation I found on Facebook but could not find on YouTube Link to Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/georgewilliam1992/videos/10154613823673618/ --- The notes below that accompanied the video: It's all here. Get your head around this and you are free. For as we know the all-caps 'UNITED KINGDOM LTD', and the 'COMMONWEALTH of AUSTRALIA' to name just two countries/companies are both privately-owned, foreign, corporation-ships. For every corporation, including 'YOU' as the 'legal-person/citizen' is considered to be a ship, and as such, they are governed under the law of the sea: Maritime Law. There is clearly no real 'ship', only a 'document-vessel' that was initially created, partly by the Doctor when s/he docked 'YOU' in the 'delivery room' of their military hospital. This technically makes 'YOU' the property, well 'salvage' of the state, but what STATE/State. TAKE-NOTICE Whenever one encounters a 'Legal Document' one will notice that the surname, and other important text will be written using the unhyphenated 'ALL UPPERCASE TEXT'. Legally Defined as: (DE-BASED / DOG LATIN) This ALL UPPERCASE text is not defined or recognised in The Oxford Styles Manual, (the governing book of the English language) – meaning that although you may be able to read it as English, it is in fact, NOT English. The all CAPS text can be found within the 'Oxford Styles Manual', under 'foreign-languages', named 'De-Based or Ancient-Latin' The main place this ALL UPPERCASE text is found to be defined as a language, is when American Sign Language (ASL), a signing language used for the deaf, is written. ASL can be defined in the book ‘The Chicago Manual of Style’ under the foreign-languages header: American Sign Language (ASL) compound signs, 10.152 and ‘glosses, 10.147’. Thus, defining this text as a foreign language. Further going onto say that when written, it has no 1-to-1 correspondence with any other languages on the document. The all CAPS or Gloss is also found in the 'Oxford Styles Manual', under foreign-languages, 'Ancient-Latin', however as the all caps UK LTD is registered in [Washington D.C] they seam to be using the 'Chicago Manual of Style' , not the Oxford. Putting two or more languages onto a legal document is known in law as a ‘Glossa’. Black's Law Dictionary defines: 'GLOSSA' - “It is a poisonous gloss which corrupts the essence of the text”. Meaning that by using a Glossa in a document they are trying to conceal or confuse the real facts. If you take a second to analyse any documents that are written within the legal realm (driving license, passport, fines, speeding tickets, court orders or summons) you will rapidly realise that while most of the document will be written in normal English, most of the important details are actually in this ALL UPPERCASE language. Like we established earlier, the ALL UPPERCASE text and the plain English text cannot be read as one text in a document, they have no jurisdiction over one another. You can only read one at a time. So you must read all of the English in one go, and then go back to read the ALL UPPERCASE. Soon you will realise that virtually all court orders, speeding tickets and most other legal documents actually make no sense whatsoever. They only make sense when we make the assumption that it is all plain English and we read it as one, once you take one away from the other – it renders the document useless. Seeing as the ‘government’ is simply a privately owned Corporation it can only impose fines and acts, upon other corporations. And by tricking us to registering our names as a corporate entity and then tricking us into thinking these names are physically us, it manages to get us to represent the corporately registered name and therefore bear the burden of fines and policies. This is a crime known as “personage”. Hand in hand with “personage” comes a crime known as “barratry” which is knowingly bringing false claims into court- This is what police, politicians, judges are doing daily. - we do not claim authorship only a repost for greater access - our website - http://private-person.com -

How to drive a car like a pro? You probably feel like you could learn some more driving hacks to become a better driver and make driving an even better experience. Take a look at ten awesome driving tips we have put together to make your driving safer! TIMESTAMPS Take a defensive driving course 0:51 Brake with your left foot 1:55 Move at the same speed as the other vehicles 2:41 Keep your hands on the wheel at the proper position 3:14 Control understeering and oversteering 3:54 Park precisely 4:41 Use the handbrake to perform a handbrake turn 5:26 Use heel-toe downshifting 6:11 Pay attention to cars in the distance 6:44 Adjust the mirrors to eliminate blind spots 7:18 SUMMARY - The best thing about defensive driving courses is that you can take them online, and they only cost around $30 but will save you much more money. How? Taking a state and court approved course can be the reason for traffic ticket dismissal. It will also help you save up to 10% on car insurance and take violation points off your driving record. - Breaking with their left foot, they don’t have to waste precious fractions of a second while moving the right foot to the brake pedal. Left-foot braking also lets them use the brake and the gas at the same time. It is a difficult technique that requires regular practice, but it is worth it, even if you don’t plan to become an auto racer. - Driving at a speed that is lower or higher than the speed of other traffic is dangerous as it can cause accidents. That’s why when choosing your speed; you should first take into account traffic density. - The new recommended position is also the most ergonomic position to hold your hands in for a long period of time. Relaxed muscles and better control over your car. This trick will, of course, make your driving a better experience. - If you’re driving on a wet or icy road, don’t accelerate too much. Driving at a moderate speed will help you avoid most cases of understeering or oversteering. This will help you stay out of trouble and traffic accidents. - Why is parallel parking so important and it is so time-consuming and confusing? If you can parallel park perfectly, you won’t be afraid of crowded parking lots. Also, you will be more confident when driving a car in reverse. When you master it, you will be able to park any vehicle in a matter of seconds. - The racer locks up the rear wheels, slows the car and points it in the right direction without losing speed he cares so much about. Again, this trick is not only good for racers, and it can help you in an emergency. It can also be handy if you have to perform a sharp, fast turn in winter. - The sense of this technique consists in shifting the transmission down from a higher gear to a lower one by hitting the gas pedal with your heel and braking with your toe at the same time. It reduces the time required for shifting gears, prevents the unloading of rear wheels, and allows fast and smooth downshifting before turning. - What do you normally look at while moving in heavy traffic? Most definitely, your nearest surroundings. It is, of course, important for your safety, but one trick you should learn is to look ahead, too. See, if you notice brake lights a quarter mile ahead of you, it can save you some valuable seconds, enough to stop your car and not get in an accident. - Being an experienced driver is first of all about driving safely. You can’t do it if your side mirrors are not properly adjusted. If the side mirrors mostly reflect the flanks of your car, it means that you are not making proper use of the whole reflecting surfaces. We are sure if you use these awesome techniques, it will take your driving experience to a whole new level. If you found this video useful, make sure to like it and share it with your friends. They also deserve to know how to drive like a pro. Attn: everyone. Re: business writing. In this lesson we will look at common abbreviations and acronyms used in emails, memos, and other types of business writing. If you work in an office or want to be involved in business at any level in the future, this lesson is for you. As is SOP (standard operating procedure), we will also quiz you at the end to test your understanding. http://www.engvid.com/17-business-abbreviations-acronyms/ TRANSCRIPT Hi. Welcome back to www.engvid.com. I'm Adam. In today's lesson we're going to look at a bit of business writing, and more specifically, we're going to look at abbreviations and acronyms. But before I even start, I want you to understand that a lot of what you're going to see today applies in many situations outside of business, but I'll explain those when we get to them. So, first of all: What's the difference between an abbreviation and an acronym? An "abbreviation" is a shortening of a word. Okay? It's one word that we cut out a bunch of letters and we make it shorter. So, for example, the abbreviation of the word "abbreviation" is "abbr." Okay? "Acronyms", on the other hand, are basically initials. Initials means the first letter of each word. And initials we usually use with people's names, like John Smith, his initials are JS. But when we want to take a bunch of words and we don't want to write all these words, we just want to make something short, but it has to be understood by basically whoever is going to read it, then we're going to use acronyms. Okay? So, let's start with the abbreviations, and in terms of business. Now, especially when we're writing, either a letter by hand like on paper or an email, these are very common. "Attn:" means: Who are you writing to? So, "attention". Whose attention are you trying to get with this letter? "Re:" means "regarding", means: About what? Now, a lot of people might think that "re:" in an email means "reply", it doesn't. "Re:" in an email or a letter always means "regarding". What is the topic of the conversation? So, you know in the email bar it has "re:", what are you talking about when you reply to somebody? The topic. Okay? Next, when we end our letter, we should say who we are and what our position is in the company. So, whether you're the Assistant or the Director, you can write: "Asst.", "Dir." or "Director", or Manager: "Mgr." Notice that all three of them have a capital. So, it doesn't matter if you're using the full word or an abbreviation, you still have to capitalize the title of a position, or the title of the person's place in the company. Okay? So, if you're the Assistant Director, you write: "Asst. Dir." Now, you're wondering why there's no dot here, and there is a dot there. There's a few ways to figure out which one to use, yes or no on the dot. Firstly, the more you read and the more you engage in this sort of writing, you will just see: What is the most common approach? But another way is a style guide. You can use The Chicago Manual of Style, that's the most common one for general purposes. Or if your company has its own style guide or a style sheet, look at it to see if they want a dot or they don't want the dot. It's really a personal choice of the company's. Okay? So, now, the main thing we have to consider is when we're writing something from the company, we're writing it on company stationery. So, the company has pages with a letterhead. It means all the information is already at the top; the name, the logo, the address, etc. So, all of this stuff might already be included, for example: which department, which building you're in, for example, in the address. We always like to take shortcuts, and we don't want to write everything. Write it short. "dept." is enough. Everybody knows "dept." means department. Building is building: "bldg." because we just want to shorten everything. The less, the better. When you end it, you're writing your name, and underneath: Who are you? Like, okay, I know your name, but who are you in terms of the company? So, you're writing your position. Now, you can see all this stuff on business cards, letterheads, etc. So, next, let's look at acronyms. So, if you watched Rebecca's lesson on business acronyms, you heard about Chief Executive Officer, "CEO", this is the boss of the company, he runs or she runs the whole company. Everybody answers to him or her. So, "CO" basically means Chief Officer, "Executive" means of the whole company, but then you have different departments or different areas of the company. "CFO", Chief Financial Officer, Chief Operating Officer, Chief Information Officer, and then there's many other ones that you can use. So, now we're going to look at some more acronyms. One thing to remember: Acronyms always use capital letters. Even if you don't need capitals in the extended version, the acronym will always be capital letters. "ETA", estimated time of arrival.

Does writing well matter in an age of instant communication? Created for Ashley Henley's Writing for Digital Media class as part of the Master of Professional Writing program at Chatham University. Project was to take something that is typically presented using traditional media (a book, in this case) and reconstruct it as a Web video. I chose to take the section on semicolons from the Chicago Manual of Style and create a video illustrating their use.

The Chicago Manual of Style (abbreviated in writing as CMS or CMOS [the version used on its website], or, by some speakers as Chicago) is a style guide for American English published since 1906 by the University of Chicago Press. Its sixteen editions have prescribed writing and citation styles widely used in publishing. It is "one of the most widely used and respected style guides in the United States". CMOS deals with aspects of editorial practice, from American English grammar and use to document preparation. This video is targeted to blind users. I'm Charles from Louis Purple, and today I'm going to teach you how to tie a Windsor knot. The Windsor knot is actually a very simple knot to tie, and it's very useful because it projects confidence. So it's a wide, triangular knot that's very suitable for presentations, job interviews, or cultural appearances, which I hope you don't frequent too often. So this is how you start. You just find the right balance depending on the length of your tie, with the wide end on the right hand side and the narrow end on the left. You might want to adjust exactly where the center of the tie should be at in the middle of your neck. So this is how you start. You cross over the wide end over the narrow end. You bring the wide end through the loop between the collar and the tie. And you bring the wide end back down. Then you just pull the wide end underneath, and then bring it up through the loop again in order to have a symmetrical shape, which should look like this. And you're almost done. There's only the easy part left and the most rewarding. Pull the wide end in front. Bring the wide end underneath, and then slide it inside the loop and tie it in the knot. You draw the knot up in order to fit your collar. So it's a knot that's really suitable for widespread collars. And as I said, then you can just adjust and tighten how big of a knot you like to obtain. This is how you tie a Windsor knot.

A serial comma is a comma placed before the coordinating conjunction in a series of three or more items. There are several names for the comma that separates the second-to-last item in a list from a final item that is introduced by "and" or "or." Though most commonly called the "serial comma," it's also known as the "Harvard comma" and the "Oxford comma" because it is used by the publishers associated with those universities. Notice the serial comma after "peaches" and "white" in the below examples. • Joe bought apples, peaches, and pears. • The American flag is red, white, and blue. Regions of the world as well as style guides differ on the usage of the serial comma. In American English, the following style guides mandate the serial comma: • APA Style • Greg Reference Manual • The Chicago Manual of Style • The MLA Style Manual • Strunk and White's Elements of Style • U.S. Government Printing Office Style Manual • Merriam-Webster Dictionary One American English style guide, the Associated Press Stylebook, advises against the serial comma. Newspapers have traditionally done without it as a way to save space. Be aware that not using the serial comma can result in some ambiguity. • Among those interviewed were his two ex-wives, Bruno Mars and Arnold Schwarzenegger. • John Smith's last will and testament divides his estate among his wife, daughter and son. In many cases, though, no ambiguity arises without the serial comma. • The house has a big yard, small kitchen and few windows. • The recipe calls for sugar, butter, cream, salt and vanilla. The serial comma is optional. Publishers typically take a stand on whether or not to use it, and writers tend to feel strongly one way or the other. Bottom line is to be consistent. Choose a style guide and adhere to it in your written documents. #PunctuationDaily #PunctuationTips #SerialComma

The classic style manual used by the greatest!! The Elements of Style also known as "the little book" by fellow cornell students is the product of a disciplined mind forged through years of studying rhetoric, form and logic. It has helped generation after generation of writer to improve their style of writing. A. B. White described it as a "case for cleanliness, accuracy, and brevity in the use of English." "There is little or no detectable bullshit in that book" … "every aspiring writer should read it" Stephen King, On writing, 2000. " ... distinguished by brevity, clarity, and prickly good sense." The New Yorker " …if you haven't seen it yet, it's never too late to get your copy of "The Elements of Style"... one of the best books on the fundamentals of writing..." The Boston Sunday Globe "Buy it, study it, enjoy it. It's as timeless as a book can be in our age of volubility." Charles Poore, The New York Times, 1959.

Part of the revolutionary LD System of learning to drive from LDC. This video shows the key points you need to learn in preparation for the driving lesson on Getting Moving. The video is used in conjunction with the LDC driving skills workbook. These resources together with guidance from an expert LDC driving instructor provide one of the most effective and efficient ways to learn to drive and become a safe driver for life. This driving lesson includes the controls, cockpit drill, moving off and stopping. If you want to see this approach in practice view the videos in the playlists entitled "Student centred learning" where Bob Morton supports Danielle as she learns to drive. Too many driving instructors focus too much attention on telling their pupils what to do and what to think! This approach only fosters dependency, doubt and blind obedience, such that once the test is passed they do all the things they were told not to do. The LDC approach is designed to foster self-reliance, confidence and responsibility resulting in safer drivers who learn to drive far more quickly and thoroughly. Unlike traditional instruction LDC heavily promotes student centred learning. This involves the student being encouraged to take more responsibility for their own development by using the LD System materials before and after each lesson and by using discovery learning with self determination and reflection rather than being told what to do by the instructor. In particular talk through instruction, prompted practice and long winded explanations are avoided, if at all possible - instead encouraging the student to work it out for themselves.
