Sky News has been given exclusive access inside the tobacco company which makes Marlboro and other leading brands, after it pledged to move into smoke-free products. Philip Morris has spent £3.5bn on new technology intended to be safer than smoking, including an electric device which heats rather than burns tobacco. However, Public Health England does not recommend this as an alternative to smoking, saying not enough research has been done. Tobacco killed 100 million people in the 20th century and for decades the industry denied there was a risk from smoking. Critics suggest the move is not a genuine attempt to minimise risk, but a way of ensuring profits as people turn away from tobacco. Regulators from the FDA will consider a potentially safer alternative to cigarettes. Philip Morris International, the maker of Marlboro and other top brands, wants the FDA to approve IQOS, a pen-like product that warms tobacco and creates an aerosol that's less toxic than cigarette smoke. Smoking is the leading cause of preventable death in the U.S. Tony Dokoupil reports. Check out my brand new iQos device. A new way of smoking cigarettes, by vaporizing the tobacco instead of burning it. Much better, much cleaner, much healthier! I bet the Marlboro man would never have guessed we'd all be doing this 20 years later :D

(24 Oct 2018) LEADIN: Philip Morris, maker of Marlboro and other major cigarette brands, is maneuvering to keep itself in business in a post-smoking world with an advertising blitz in Japan and other tobacco-loving markets. The company is renewing its effort to win over new generations of tobacco users to its iQOS devices, which heat tobacco without burning it. STORYLINE: One of the biggest purveyors of tobacco products, Philip Morris says making the world "smoke free" is its goal. It's promoting a new generation of its pen-like iQOS devices in Tokyo - more than five million of the nearly six million users of the product are in Japan. "I think Japan is a country where people like innovation, like to experiment and try new products," says the company's chief executive Andre Calantzopoulos. By heating tobacco without burning it, iQOS gives users vapour and flavour without the hazards of smoke and tar from cigarettes, cigars and pipes, the company claims. It's different to e-cigarettes, another popular "reduced risk" product, which don't contain tobacco, but instead vaporizes a liquid usually containing nicotine. The iQOS has yet to win U.S. Food and Drug Administration approval, but it's sold in much of Europe, in Turkey, South Korea, New Zealand and Colombia. The company's rebranding effort seems to be paying off in Japan, where the company has opened nine iQOS stores offering free WiFi and drinks in trendy districts nationwide. Mami Kugishima, a 32-year-old hair stylist and iQOS user, says she likes the way the smell doesn't get in her hair. The World Health Organization points to tobacco as a leading cause of death, killing up to half its users, or more than seven million people every year. Of those, about 890,000 deaths are non-smokers exposed to secondhand smoke. Philip Morris says research it has funded shows health risks are reduced with iQOS, while they are not zero. The device's lower temperatures release less cancer-causing substances than when tobacco is burned in regular smoking, while still providing nicotine to the user. Calantzopoulos claims wider use of the device would help people's health. Critics accuse the company of glossing over the risks in its effort to lure new generations of tobacco users, an allegation it denies. Some believe Japan is going too easy on tobacco, including iQOS. The government has a big stake in the tobacco business, owning a third of stocks in major cigarette company Japan Tobacco Inc. as its top investor. The industry was a government monopoly until 1985 and is a huge source of tax revenues. Cigarette packs don't carry graphic pictures and warning labels about the "risks of a stroke" or "addiction to nicotine" are in fine print. Philip Morris is still one of the biggest makers of conventional tobacco products. Apart from Marlboro, its brands include Parliament, L&M and Chesterfield. It sells the local "heritage" brands Dji Sam Soe, Sampoerna A and Sampoerna U in Indonesia; Fortune and Jackpot in the Philippines; Belmont and Canadian Classics in Canada; and Delicados in Mexico. A basic iQOS kit, which includes a charger, starts at 7,980 yen (approx. $71 USD) in Japan. Fancier versions cost more. Refills, made of tobacco leaves that are ground, made into sheets and then crimped, look like tiny cigarettes. They go for 500 yen (approx. $4.40 USD) a pack - about the same as a pack of Marlboros at 510 yen (approx. $4.50 USD). In Japan, as elsewhere, smoking is gradually tapering off. Man coughs after smoking ++OUT OF FOCUS++ STORYLINE: Juries can punish a cigarette company and award money to an aggrieved widow only for the harm done to her husband, not to other smokers, a lawyer for tobacco manufacturer Philip Morris USA told the US Supreme Court on Tuesday. In seeking to turn back a 79.5 (m) million US dollar award of punitive damages in Oregon, Philip Morris argued that the jury should have been told explicitly that other smokers, no matter how tragic their stories, would have to prove their own cases. Justices appeared to be confused over how to apply prior rulings that limited punitive damages, money intended to punish a defendant for its behaviour and deter its repetition, to the case of Jessie Williams, a two-pack-a-day smoker of Marlboros who died of lung cancer. Williams' widow, Mayola, followed through on a promise to her husband and sued Philip Morris, the maker of Marlboros. The company is part of Altria Group Inc. Oregon courts have upheld the verdict, even after the Supreme Court sent the case back earlier to make sure it conformed to a 2003 high court opinion limiting punitive damages. Several justices said the best course may be to ask the state Supreme Court once again to explain its ruling. To the dismay of anti-smoking groups, the Supreme Court agreed to hear the company's appeal. With emerging technological advances and a combination of expertise and innovation, we have been able to develop what we believe is the future of tobacco products. It is the burning of tobacco that generates smoke and the vast majority of harmful toxicants generally associated with smoking-related diseases. Smoke-free products, backed by science, offer a promising way to reduce the risk of harm for those who would otherwise continue to smoke. This is why, for over a decade, we have been working on, and investing in, the research and development of smoke-free products that do not burn tobacco and therefore are potentially much less harmful than smoking. This is the story of how we created our first heated tobacco product, told by some of our key scientists who developed it. On Friday, Reuters reports that India plans to seek an explanation from Philip Morris International about its marketing practices. Reuters reported earlier this week that the tobacco giant used tactics that government officials say break the country's law. According to Reuters, Philip Morris advertises Marlboro cigarettes at tobacco shops in India and distributes free smokes at local nightclubs and bars to promote the brand to young people. Indian government officials previously have said these marketing activities violate the country's Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act. http://feeds.reuters.com/~r/reuters/topNews/~3/RWR9IQW964E/us-pmi-india-government-idUSKBN1A62E6 http://www.wochit.com This video was produced by YT Wochit News using http://wochit.com

Shiho Fukada for The Washington Post | Getty Images Customers try IQOS device during demonstration at IQOS store in Tokyo, Japan on July 31, 2017. Jefferies lowered its rating to hold from buy on shares of both Philip Morris and Altria, saying the tobacco companies are falling behind in heated tobacco markets and falling behind in vapor product markets. See significant share loss for Philip Morris in Japans heated tobacco products market during the second half of this year and expect the U.S. heated market to now have a smaller contribution, Jefferies analyst Owen Bennett said in a note Friday. Altria is at a disadvantage in vapour due to available formats, and concerns around delay on IQOS [the companys heated tobacco device] will likely weigh, Bennett added. Philip Morris has invested over $4.5 billion in the last decade to develop smoke-free products such as IQOS. Shares of Philip Morris fell 3.1 percent in trading, while Altrias stock fell 1.8 percent. Jefferies lowered its price target on Philip Morris and Altria to $80 per share and $61 per share, respectively, from $93 per share and $70 per share. Philip Morris and Altria products that claim to reduce the risks of smoking, or RRP, are penetrating tobacco markets slower than before, Bennett said. Jefferies lowered its expectation for RRP penetration by fiscal year 2026 to 41 percent in U.S. and overseas markets, down from 51 percent and 61 percent, respectively. Jefferies now sees RRP volumes skewed to vapour vs heated, Bennett said, noting it as a negative for Philip Morris as it is likely to continue to focus on heated due to risk of dilution from shift to vapour. Jefferies expects Philip Morris to lose sizeable shipment share in the second half of this year as we see full year Japan volumes down to 23 billion from 31.3 billion in fiscal year 2017, Bennett said. We still see IQOS approval but dont foresee a launch till 2Q19 at the earliest, Bennett said.

By Paritosh Bansal, Tom Lasseter, Duff Wilson Thomas Wilson, Ami Miyazaki and Aditya Kalra TOKYO/TEL AVIV/BOGOTA (Reuters) - In Tokyo’s upscale Ginza shopping district, around the corner from the sparkling storefronts of Tiffany & Co and Cartier, shoppers searching for a new device called iQOS can buy it in a boutique behind a glass façade. The store combines a high-tech aesthetic with the feel of an exclusive club: The young woman at the door says a members-only smoking lounge is upstairs. http://feeds.reuters.com/~r/reuters/topNews/~3/y6aSze5LF4Y/special-report-how-philip-morris-is-selling-regulators-on-its-hot-new-smoking-device-idUSKBN1EF1H8 http://www.wochit.com This video was produced by YT Wochit Business using http://wochit.com

According to a letter to the agency’s commissioner, ten U.S. senators called on the Food and Drug Administration to reject Philip Morris International Inc’s application to market its iQOS smoking device as being less risky than cigarettes. The senators are all Democrats. According to the letter, a copy of which was seen by Reuters, they cited remarks by an expert scientific panel that reviewed the application for the FDA. The panel voted last month to recommend against granting Philip Morris permission to do so. The senators also referred to a Reuters report in December. That report identified shortcomings in the training and professionalism of some of the lead investigators in the clinical trials submitted to the FDA by Philip Morris. http://feeds.reuters.com/~r/reuters/topNews/~3/TG9xvaMRK6E/u-s-senators-ask-fda-to-reject-philip-morris-iqos-application-idUSKBN1FR1WH http://www.wochit.com This video was produced by YT Wochit News using http://wochit.com
