Gallery views of The Costume Institute's spring 2019 exhibition, Camp: Notes on Fashion, narrated by exhibition curator Andrew Bolton. Through more than 250 objects dating from the seventeenth century to the present, The Costume Institute's spring 2019 exhibition explores the origins of camp's exuberant aesthetic. Susan Sontag's 1964 essay "Notes on 'Camp'" provides the framework for the exhibition, which examines how the elements of irony, humor, parody, pastiche, artifice, theatricality, and exaggeration are expressed in fashion. "CHARLES JAMES - BEYOND FASHION" Exhibition at Metropolitan Museum of Art New York by FC

Charles James "BEYOND FASHION" Exhibition at Metropolitan Museum of Art New York The inaugural exhibition of the newly renovated Costume Institute examines the career of the legendary twentieth-century Anglo-American couturier Charles James (1906--1978). Charles James: Beyond Fashion explores James's design process, focusing on his use of sculptural, scientific, and mathematical approaches to construct revolutionary ball gowns and innovative tailoring that continue to influence designers today. Approximately seventy-five of James's most notable designs are presented in two locations—the new Lizzie and Jonathan Tisch Gallery in the Anna Wintour Costume Center as well as special exhibition galleries on the Museum's first floor. "Charles James: Beyond Fashion" will explore James's design process, focusing on his use of sculptural, scientific, and mathematical approaches to construct revolutionary ball gowns and innovative tailoring that continue to influence designers today. Approximately seventy-five of James's most notable designs will be presented in two locations—the new Lizzie and Jonathan Tisch Gallery in the Anna Wintour Costume Center as well as special exhibition galleries on the Museum's first floor. After designing in his native London, and then Paris, James arrived in New York City in 1940. Though he had no formal training, he is now regarded as one of the greatest designers in America to have worked in the tradition of the Haute Couture. His fascination with complex cut and seaming led to the creation of key design elements that he updated throughout his career: wrap-over trousers, figure-eight skirts, body-hugging sheaths, ribbon capes and dresses, spiral-cut garments, and poufs. These, along with his iconic ball gowns from the late 1940s and early 1950s—the "Four-Leaf Clover," "Butterfly," "Tree," "Swan," and "Diamond"—will be showcased in the exhibition YOUTUBE CHANNEL: http://www.youtube.com/fashionchannel FACEBOOK: https://www.facebook.com/fashionchannelmilano TWITTER: https://twitter.com/FashionChannelP PINTEREST: http://pinterest.com/fashionchannel INSTAGRAM: http://instagram.com/fashionchanneltv The best videos, the most exclusive moments of the international runway since 1982 until now, of the most representative fashion weeks of the world. Met Gala 2019: 15 Stars Who Slayed on Fashion's Biggest Night | NBC New York

08:15
Cardi B swept by in a stunning red quilted dress accentuated with a matching sequin headpiece, feathers and a train that took up much of the pink carpet, Jared Leto was accompanied by his own (fake) head and Katy Perry came as a candled chandelier at the crazy, campy Met Gala on Monday night. Lady Gaga used the carpet as a runway and a changing station — earning giggles and claps from Anna Wintour — and Tiffany Haddish brought fried chicken in a plastic bag as many of the A-list guests worked the camp theme to the max. That included Zendaya, whose Cinderella Tommy Hilfiger dress went aglow with the wave of a magic wand. She dropped one of her see-through slippers on the way up the long staircase at the Metropolitan Museum of Art for the cocktail hour. Also princessy, of the saucy variety: Nicki Minaj in a short pink Prabal Gurung dress with yards and yards to her train, the last star to walk the carpet. Perry, whose look was created by Jeremy Scott for Moschino, said she wanted to be "of the light," though she appeared concerned her heavy looking headpiece would topple as she smiled and walked precariously up the stairs, designer Diane von Furstenberg briefly in her orbit as Lady Liberty. Here are 15 stars who really brought the Camp this year. Jared Leto was accompanied at the Met Gala on Monday by his own (fake) head, Katy Perry was a candled chandelier, Lady Gaga used the carpet as a runway and a changing station and Tiffany Haddish brought fried chicken in a plastic bag as many of the A-list guests worked the camp theme to the max. Perry appeared concerned her heavy looking headpiece would topple as she smiled and walked precariously up the stairs at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, designer Diane Von Furstenberg briefly in her orbit as Lady Liberty. Leto wore a red caftan with jewel loops, cradling his long-haired macabre version of himself, and Tracee Ellis Ross posed inside a gold picture frame attached to the front of her black dress. Regina King, in a copper sequin gown with a large shoulder embellishment, said she wasn't ready to go full camp, so she stuck to high lacquered hair. Brooke Jaffe gives Sara Gore and Jacque Reid the details of the 2019 Met Gala including a closer dive at the looks of Cardi B, Emily Blunt, Serena Williams and so much more. Chinese Fashion Highlighted at New York Museum

02:01
Many of the Chinese fashion designs worn by many of the world's most glamorous celebrities in walking the red carpet at the Met Ball Gala 2015 are now put on display in an exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. With the theme "China: Through the Looking Glass", the annual fashion exhibition, sponsored by the museum's Costume Institute, is the largest ever in terms of exhibition area that showcases the impact of Chinese stereotypes on Western designers. Andrew Bolton, curator of the Costume Institute, said Chinese fashion and Chinese designs have long influenced the rest of the world. "The history of the impact of China goes back to the Roman Empire but I would say the heyday of chinoiserie, which is what we are really looking at in the exhibition, was the mid-18th century," said Bolton. Most of the designs in the exhibition were created in the 20th century. Some pieces were inspired by Chairman Mao, and the bulk of the show features lush fabrics and glamorous designs. One of the highlights is the Blue Porcelain Gallery, which shows the history of China and the West through porcelain that served as a big inspiration for designers. One famous dress was created by Karl Lagerfeld for Chanel in 1984, and works by Jean Paul Gaultier, Yves St-Laurent and Alexander McQueen are among the 140 objects on display in the exhibition. Chinese designer Guo Pei is also represented. However, according to Bolton, one designer topped all the others when it came to using China as an inspiration. "I think Galliano, more than any other designer, since very early on, even before his Dior days, was inspired by China and continues to be," said Bolton. A whole room of the exhibition has been dedicated to Galliano's China-themed work. The exhibition pays homage to Chinese-American actress Anna May Wong, who eventually left Hollywood after growing tired of perpetuating Chinese stereotypes. Bolton said films have played a huge role in forming the vision of China, which designers use as an inspiration, adding that designers tend to be more interested in the aesthetics of China rather than in the country itself. "A lot of what you see in the exhibition here is not accurate. It's very much seen through the gaze of the Westerner, and it's something that has been lost in translation. So again, it's something we tackle, the idea of objects being inspiring, China being inspiring to the West but how that can often lead to sometimes quite damaging sort of stereotypes," said Bolton. Whether the show is successful in changing some of those stereotypes will be up for viewers to decide. The exhibition will last through August 16. PUNK: Chaos to Couture - Gallery Views

10:43
PUNK: Chaos to Couture, organized by The Costume Institute, examines punk's impact on high fashion from the movement's birth in the early 1970s through its continuing influence today. Featuring approximately one hundred designs for men and women, the exhibition includes original punk garments and recent, directional fashion to illustrate how haute couture and ready-to-wear borrow punk's visual symbols. Here, curator Andrew Bolton takes us through the groundbreaking exhibition and discusses the relationship between the punk concept of "do-it-yourself" and the couture concept of "made-to-measure." Designing 3D Printed Dresses | FASHION AS DESIGN

Textiles are among the most ancient human design pieces. In this short film, New York-based fashion collective threeASFOUR, together with collaborators Travis Fitch and Stratsys, reimagine fabric manipulation and textile design using 3D printing to create dresses that transform based on the ergonomics and movement of the human body. FASHION AS DESIGN is a new course by MoMA that explores a selection of garments from around the world—ranging from Kente cloth to jeans to 3D-printed dresses. Each week will begin with a conversation between the course instructors—Paola Antonelli, Michelle Fisher, and Stephanie Kramer—that introduces the themes, items, and questions that we will explore. OMA designs The Met's Manus x Machina fashion and technology exhibition

01:44
OMA New York has used translucent scrim to create a "ghost cathedral" for 2016's Costume Institute exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, which focuses on the convergence of fashion and technology. Manus x Machina – Fashion in an Age of Technology was open from 5 May to 14 August in The Met's Robert Lehman Wing, within the temporary space designed by Dutch architecture firm OMA's New York office. Sponsored by Apple and curated by Andrew Bolton, the exhibition features more than 170 garments that demonstrate ways in which the hand (manus) and machine (machina) are used together to create both haute couture (high fashion) and prêt-à-porter (ready-to-wear) designs. "Manus x Machina questions the dialectical relationship in which the hand and machine are portrayed as discordant instruments in the production of the haute couture and pret-a-porter," said Bolton. Led by architect Shohei Shigematsu, OMA New York transformed what was previously an underused hallway into the exhibition space using scaffolding wrapped with a white perforated PVC fabric. "We had to create a whole environment, so what we did was to create this translucent ghost cathedral," Shigematsu told Dezeen. The classical architectural shapes were designed to be in keeping with the museum's existing architecture, while materials provide a neutral space that would allow visitors to appreciate the details of the intricate garments. American Marketing Association New York, Brilliance in Marketing: MoMA--Is Fashion Modern?

02:02
The American Marketing Association visited the Museum of Modern Art's new exhibition of iconic fashion that includes over a hundred well-known brands. Is fashion art? See what brands DO belong in a museum... Transcript: Is fashion modern? Are brands art? The Museum of Modern Art aims to answer those questions in a new exhibition of garments and accessories, and the American Marketing Association New York is here to share some of the iconic designs in this much-anticipated show, that is wall-to-wall with well-known brands. It's been over 70 years since the MoMA’s last foray into fashion. Past curators just didn't consider it art. A walk through this newly opened and ground-breaking exhibit, however, suggests they were wrong. The exhibition takes up the entire 6th floor of the building on West 53rd. Move over Picasso and Van Gogh, and make space for Dockers khakis, Lululemon yoga pants, Snuglis and fanny packs. But that is not to say the exhibition is not without standards of cool like Ray Bans, Levis, a Prada backpack, and Calvin Klein briefs. Speaking of underwear, what about the life-changing WonderBra and Spanx. And shoes! There are plenty of them on exhibit, from the commonplace flipflop to the anti-establishment Doc Martens. And you've got Converse All Stars and Nikes, Tevas, and Moon boots. The MoMA presents each item within a context that includes function, style, technology, and cultural identity. From the luxury of the Hermes Birkin Bag to working-class Woolrich flannel shirt, from the fun of Lily Pulitzer to the politics of Colin Kapernick, the show is expansive, both historic and up-to-the-minute. The 111 pieces in the exhibit were culled from hundreds of potential items; selected for the strength of design, pioneering use of materials, and cultural impact. It is impossible to tell the story of design without talking about fashion. Some brands do belong in a museum. And that's brilliance in marketing.
