The Northern Sea Route is open

03:11
August 2010. The cargo of stable gas condensate, produced at NOVATEK’s Purovsky Gas Condensate Stabilization Plant, traveled from Russia’s Murmansk Port to China’s Ningbo Port in 22 days, approximately half the time required by the traditional shipping route through the Suez Canal. The success of the first high-tonnage shipment, combined with the significantly reduced delivery time, demonstrates the possibility for future trade with China and other countries of the Asian-Pacific region using the Northern Sea Route as well as providing additional logistical options for developing hydrocarbon fields on the Yamal peninsula and arctic shelf.

The Search For The Northwest Passage - Part 1 of 2 (Exploration Documentary) | Timeline

Check out our new website for more incredible history documentaries: HD and ad-free. http://bit.ly/2O6zUsK The Historical Story of Finding the Holy Grail of Exploration, the Northwest Passage The search for a sea route across the top of the world linking Europe to Asia - the fabled Northwest Passage - was one of the most difficult and dangerous in the history of exploration. 2005 marks the 100th anniversary of Roald Amundsen's discovery of the elusive route. The original 1845 expedition led by Sir John Franklin resulted in Franklin and his entire team of 128 men disappearing whilst searching for the passage. What happened to Franklin's expedition is one of the Arctic's most enduring mysteries, Was the expedition poisoned by its own supplies? Did some members of the expedition commit cannibalism or were they killed by the local Inuit? It wasn't until 1903, that an expedition finally found a way through which was lead by Roald Amundsen. His success owed much to the experience of those who had gone before him. But unlike them, he also understood that to survive in such conditions, he had to learn from the native Inuit. The skills Amundsen learnt in the Arctic would later pave the way for his successful assault on the South Pole. The two-part series concentrates on these two famous expeditions. The stories are told using dramatic reconstructions, CGI and documentary techniques. New information sheds light on what happened to Franklin's expedition and also shows how Amundsen was able to succeed when so many before had failed. Documentary first broadcast in 2005. ► Ice Race - The NORTHEAST PASSAGE - the dream of the new Marine Silk Road, (FULL DOCUMENTARY)

44:56
Please switch on the subtitles to see the translations in english! Ice Race The Dream of the New Marine Silk Road Though it is usually associated with weather-related disasters, global climate change has also brought about interesting possibilities with the opening of a Northern Sea Route, a potential maritime highway connecting East Asia and Europe through the Arctic that is being billed as the Northern Silk Road. This promising new route provides a welcome opportunity to bypass the far longer southern route that connects Korea, Japan, and China with the West, through pirate-infested waters. The southern route, which carries 90% of petroleum, fishery products, and other trade, is a vital lifeline for Asia, but a northern route through the Bering Sea and across the North Pole is 40% shorter and could be a boon for trade. The Russians are leading the race for a safe summer route that travels through their newly booming ports, but other countries, including Japan, Canada, Germany, and Korea, are catching up. As the ice melts each summer, these countries are stepping up to find a profitable way to take advantage of an unexpected benefit of global climate change.

The Northern Sea Route is being trumpeted by Russia and China as the "golden waterway" for Europe-Asia trade as warmer temperatures melt the ice in the Siberian waters. Northwest Passage could be used as a new shipping route

RESTRICTIONS: Broadcast: NO USE JAPAN, NO USE TAIWAN Digital: NO USE JAPAN, NO USE TAIWAN As climate change continues to impact the Arctic, countries are planning to use the Northwest Passage as a shortcut shipping route, reports online magazine Grist. Currently, the Suez Canal and Panama Canal are used as major shipping routes in the world. However in the future, ships traveling from Japan to western Europe could be able to travel north through the Bering Strait to Europe. This would slash the travel route from 13,000 miles to about 7,000 miles and could potentially cut shipping prices in half. Ships traveling from Yokohama Port could also make the journey through the Northwest Passage to New York City in about 21 days instead of the standard 25 days, traveling 7,480 nautical miles instead of 9,720 nautical miles through the Panama Canal. As the ships travel through the Arctic, some are worried that fossil fuels used by the vessels may harm the already fragile Arctic ecosystem. Scientists estimate that by 2050 there will be no more ice in the Arctic. RUNDOWN SHOWS: 1. Arctic ice melting and Northwest Passage 2. Suez Canal and Panama Canal shipping route 3. Russia’s Northern Sea Route is a Game-Changer: Transportation Costs Worldwide to Be Halved!

The scale and character of this dialogue have become clear in this audience. 300 Russian companies, dozens of international ones, ministers, governors, business people. Right here, they're discussing projects that are capable of making the Arctic a locomotive for the Russian economy. The largest project for decades to come is the Northern Sea Route, which basically allows for unlimited opportunities in transportation. Largely due to the extent of global warming, this corridor could potentially be used year-round. And it's Russia that will ensure the efficient functioning of the Northern Sea Route. It caused a special interest at the forum.

Click "more info" for lyrics! Give Stan Rogers a space on the Canadian walk of fame, sign the petition here: http://www.petitiononline.com/GSRAS1/petition.html Thank you in advance for your support. -Give Stan A Star Foundation Chorus: Ah, for just one time I would take the Northwest Passage To find the hand of Franklin reaching for the Beaufort Sea; Tracing one warm line through a land so wild and savage And make a Northwest Passage to the sea. Westward from the Davis Strait 'tis there 'twas said to lie The sea route to the Orient for which so many died; Seeking gold and glory, leaving weathered, broken bones And a long-forgotten lonely cairn of stones. (chorus) Three centuries thereafter, I take passage overland In the footsteps of brave Kelso, where his "sea of flowers" began Watching cities rise before me, then behind me sink again This tardiest explorer, driving hard across the plain. (chorus) And through the night, behind the wheel, the mileage clicking west I think upon Mackenzie, David Thompson and the rest Who cracked the mountain ramparts and did show a path for me To race the roaring Fraser to the sea. (chorus) How then am I so different from the first men through this way? Like them, I left a settled life, I threw it all away. To seek a Northwest Passage at the call of many men To find there but the road back home again. (chorus)

Russia to build futuristic nuclear-powered icebreaker to keep Northern Sea Route open - TomoNews

05:53
ST. PETERSBURG, RUSSIA — Russia has unveiled a new nuclear-powered icebreaker that is designed to keep the Northern Sea Route open all year round. Russia’s new nuclear-powered icebreaker, known as Leader, will exceed 200 meters in length and will be about 50 meters wide. It would be capable of plowing through 2-meter-thick ice at a speed of 29 kph and capable of cutting through ice up to 4.5 meters thick. It is expected that the new icebreaker would lead tankers carrying liquefied natural gas weighing up to 300,000 tonnes to pass through the Northern Sea Route in any season. Russia launched the world’s biggest icebreaker, the Arktika, in June. The icebreaker is powered by two nuclear reactors and can break through 4-meter-deep ice. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. First tanker crosses northern sea route without ice breaker

01:03
Read full details of the news in this link: http://www.bbc.com/news/science-environment-41037071 A commercial LNG tanker has sailed across the colder, northern route from Europe to Asia without the protection of an ice-breaker for the first time. The specially-built ship completed the crossing in just six-and-a-half days setting a new record, according to tanker's Russian owners. The 300-metre-long Sovcomflot ship, the Christophe de Margerie, was carrying gas from Norway to South Korea. Rising Arctic temperatures are boosting commercial shipping across this route. The Christophe de Margerie is the world's first and, at present, only ice-breaking LNG carrier. The ship, which features a lightweight steel reinforced hull, is the largest commercial ship to receive Arc7 certification, which means it is capable of travelling through ice up to 2.1m thick. On this trip it was able to keep up an average speed of 14 knots despite sailing through ice that was over one-metre-thick in places. tankerImage copyrightSOVCOMFLOT Image caption The ship is the first of a new fleet specially constructed to sail through ice all year round On its maiden voyage earlier this year, the Christophe de Margerie docked in the Russian port of Sabetta. Russian President Vladimir Putin congratulated the crew and energy company officials gathered on the ship's bridge, saying: "This is a big event in the opening up of the Arctic." The Russian owners, Sovcomflot, will use this ice-breaking tanker to export gas from the Yamal peninsula to Asian markets later this year. It will be the first of a planned fleet of 15 that will transport gas from these ice bound fields all year round. "Previously there was only a window of navigation from our summer to autumn, but this ship will be able to sail westwards from Sabetta which is the Yamal energy port, all year round and eastwards from July to December," said Sovcomflot spokesman Bill Spears. "Before the northern sea route was only open for four months and you had to have ice-breakers - so it's a significant development." In 2016, the northern sea route saw 19 full transits from the Atlantic to the Pacific. High insurance and large fees for Russian ice-breakers are still discouraging some ship owners from the riskier northern route. But the economic benefits are attractive - the Christophe de Margerie took just 19 days for the entire voyage, around 30% faster than going by Suez. There has been an overall decline in Arctic sea ice over the past 30 years, linked by scientists to rising global temperatures. This year, according to the US National Snow and Ice Data Centre (NSIDC), the annual maximum extent of Arctic sea ice hit a record low for the third year in a row. PutinImage copyrightOLGA MALTSEVA Image caption The Russian President speaking during the naming ceremony for the new tanker earlier this year This diminution of northern ice is something that the Russian ship owners believe will continue well into the future. "If there was a material change in the ice thickness it would change the period of the year that the ship could move through the Northern Sea Route," said Bill Spears from Sovcomflot. "There is an assumption that the ice is not going to thicken dramatically for the economic life of these vessels, which could be over 30 years." Environmental campaigners, though, are worried that increased traffic in this inhospitable region could have potentially significant effects. "We're concerned that this is a commercial opportunity that has only opened up because of global warming, and we're especially concerned that having taken advantage of the thinning of the ice, shipping operations are now expanding in that part of the world," said John Maggs from Seas at Risk. "It is not like sailing in open water, even if you have an ice classed ship, the risks are dramatically increased." As well as the risk of accident or spillage, there are worries that some of the ships that will sail along this route will be powering their engines with heavier, dirtier marine fuels. The black carbon that they produce could be very damaging to snow and ice in the region, increasing the melting. "The environmental risks are enormous," said John Maggs. "You are taking industrial-sized installations and moving them through a pristine Arctic environment, so it's going to have an impact - and what are we getting in return, slightly shorter journey times? A 30% gain is not much of gain to me."

Putin: Russia And China Considering Connecting The Northern Sea Route With The Chinese Silk Road

05:13
Russian President Vladimir Putin’s attendance at this year’s Belt and Road Forum has, as usual, lent itself to renewed talk about the concerning depth of Sino-Russian ties. A cottage industry of self-styled experts on the rise of Asia and Eurasia push the line that Moscow is seeking to cement an alliance with China, despite the considerable lack of evidence of policy support behind it. It’s best to see their growing interdependence as structurally inevitable. Subscribe to Vesti News https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCa8MaD6gQscto_Nq1i49iew?sub_confirmation=1 Russia’s primary exports are hydrocarbons and natural resources, and China overtook the United States as the world’s leading importer of crude oil in 2017. China’s import needs to meet rising food demand are rising too. It just so happens that Russia is well-positioned to help address both appetites at a time when Moscow needs all the growth opportunities it can get. Russian authorities continue to tout the line that Belt and Road cooperation is progressing, though they rarely explain what that entails. Every statement needs to be taken with a large grain of salt, or perhaps whatever Putin and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un were drinking in Vladivostok before the forum. Economic ties are deepening, but not in service to the geopolitical meme that is the Belt and Road. Northern Sea Route and its impact on global trade

01:25:54
IIASA breakout session at the Arctic Circle Assembly October 2017 About 80% of global trade relies on the maritime transport. Once the Northern Sea Route (NSR) becomes a viable transportation corridor to connect Europe and Asia, it may significantly re-shape the existing trade flows, which will also eventually have an impact on the political layout worldwide. To become operational on a large scale, the NSR requires massive investments, which may come from emerging Asian economies. This session will present and discusses a research project aimed at investigating the effects of an enhanced NSR onto the global trade under market, geo-political and climate uncertainty. The project intends to analyze plausible pathways, identify winners and losers, and suggest scenarios maximizing the benefits for as many interested parties as possible. New Threats to Russian Security Emerge In Arctic, Securing Northern Sea Route

01:48
http://www.undergroundworldnews.com MOSCOW, February 25. /TASS/. A wide range of threats and challenges to Russia's security is emerging lately in the country's Arctic zone, Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu told the ministry's board meeting on Wednesday. To counter the threats, the Defense Ministry should focus on developing military infrastructure in the area, Shoigu said. Late in 2014, the Joint Strategic Command was formed on the basis of the Northern Fleet, he said, adding that the Defense Ministry would build up troops in the Chukotka peninsula to guarantee the Northern Sea Route safety. http://tass.ru/en/russia/779663
