DIT's Product Design programme is the first of its kind in Ireland. Graduates of the programme have gone on to a variety of successful careers in Ireland and abroad. In the course of this four year honours degree, students are immersed in the various disciplines of product design through a unique interdisciplinary approach -- students develop their knowledge and skill sets through modules in the areas of design, engineering and business. This integrated method produces product designers who have the ability and confidence to be both creative and innovative in whatever role they choose to pursue. It gives them the necessary ability to face the challenges of designing new products and bringing them to market. Graduates of the program have proven themselves. equally comfortable in the design studio, the engineering office and the boardroom. Students learn how to produce accurate physical models of their designs using the extensive studio and prototyping facilities. They also use industry standard design software to bring their projects to fruition. In the capstone module of the programme, students conceptualise, design and develop a novel product. A number of students have developed successful products in this project which they have gone on to pursue and develop further upon graduation. While the final project is important for the students' individual development, a series of team projects over the course of the program help the students to develop interpersonal skills along with an appreciation of team dynamics. Students of the programme have won and been shortlisted for prestigious national and international awards including the Enterprise Ireland All Ireland Student Enterprise Awards, the James Dyson award, the International Forum for Design Concept awards in Hannover, Germany and the Staples Global Eco-easy Challenge in Washington DC, USA. Students of the programme have won and are regular finalists in the DIT Bolton Trust Student Enterprise awards in which they must demonstrate the ability to form their own company, design and develop a new product and produce a viable business plan in tandem. Complexity: Designing Complex Systems for the 21st Century

24:42
Keynote by Wei Chen The design of complex "engineered" systems in the 21st century poses a set of common challenges, to name a few, the complexity and computational cost of system analysis, the heterogeneity of information at different levels of abstraction, the various sources of uncertainties, the multidisciplinary organization with conflicting goals, and the difficulty in understanding the socio-technical interfaces. Classical systems engineering approaches which focus on processes for cascading engineering requirements from higher to lower system levels is no longer suited to dealing with the global and socio-technical aspects of the 21st century complex systems. This presentation will first explore the research challenges and opportunities in designing complex "engineered" systems, and then focus on two specific topics in this area, i.e., (1) design of multiscale systems and (2) integrating heterogeneous consumer preference into enterprise-driven product design. Research in multiscale design presents the significant benefits of using computational design techniques for designing novel materials, new products, and new processes with exceptional system performance across diverse application domains such as material, energy, and medicine. Integrating consumer choice models into product design demonstrates the potential of combining analytical choice modeling with social networks for studying the social influence on new product adoption. It is concluded in this presentation that as systems continue to grow with increased complexity and more stringent requirements, many unanswered questions can be tackled using rigorous design methodologies.

Pricing and Product Design in a Data-Driven Economy

41:50
2013 INFORMS Annual Meeting Minneapolis Plenaries and Keynotes Presented by Guillermo Gallego, Columbia University In this talk, Gallego discusses efforts by companies like Hewlett Packard to use big data to understand customer's buying and product substitution patterns under competition. He also reports on efforts to design and price bundles as branded products by companies like Air Canada, and efforts to offer consumption and fulfillment options by companies such as United Airlines and Hilton Hotels and Resorts. He also discusses how companies can mine sales, prices and product attributes to develop product similarity metrics to identify products whose prices are out of range, products that are candidate for discontinuance, and opportunities for the introduction of new products. Gallego further describes advances in assortment and price optimization that rely on discrete choice models. Finally, he discusses how these capabilities can be used to inform novel approaches to product and service design that rely on real options that allow sellers to hedge against demand uncertainty while providing tangible benefits to buyers.

How to Create a Book Design Template in Photoshop

25:45
I Guarantee I Can Teach You to Master Photoshop. Learn How: https://phlearn.com/aaronwillteachyou Download the Template! http://www.phlearn.com/book How to Create and Use Design Templates in Photoshop Learn how to create a design once, and apply it to many different objects in Photoshop. Each time you make adjustments to the design, those changes will automatically update on every image. Place the Design into Images Using Linked Smart Objects Once you are happy with your original design, save it as a .TIF or .PSD file, that way you can edit the layers at any time. Next, open an image where you would like your design to show up. Go to ‘File - Place Linked Object’ and choose your design. Transform and scale it into place to match the photo. To change the perspective of the design, first, rotate and scale it into place. Next, hold CTRL/CMD and click on one of the corners and drag it into perspective. Use visual guides like the corners of a book to guide your perspective transformation. Repeat these steps as many times as you need. Each time you make changes to the original design, those changes will automatically update on the new documents. Change Color On Each Instance If you want to change the color of the design on each image, it is best to do that on the image, not the original design. Use Layer FX like ‘Color Overlay” to change the color of an entire design, or clipped layers to change colors in certain areas. Any changes you make to the original design will appear automatically, and the new colors applied on the image will update as well. This will allow you to test different color schemes on different objects, like using light text on a dark background or dark text on a light background. Registered Design: Protect the Unique Aesthetics or Function of your Product

06:00
You might not have a novel or brand new idea but what if you have found a way to significantly improve on an existing idea? To protect you from someone copying your novel idea, you would patent that idea. But if you improve or modify an idea known to the world, you would register a design. This could be an improvement or modification in what the product looks like (Aesthetic Design) or an improvement or modification in function (Functional Design). In this Episode we cover the following: - The different categories of Registered Designs - The key differences between a Patent and a Design - Why an Entrepreneur should register his/her Design If you have any questions or require some assistance in protecting your intellectual property, feel free to send us an email at: [email protected] Link to our previous episode on "South African Patents Explained. SmartBunker® Designed in SolidWorks® by North Design Works Ltd.

00:53
The SmartBunker® is another example of the diverse projects handled by North Design Works Ltd. This novel product is a storage / dispenser unit for both animal feeds (primarily equestrian) and solid fuels. For the former it ensures good meal rotation and is vermin proof. For the latter it makes "coal shovels a thing of the past" whilst being a great aid to elderly or persons of reduced mobility. Commissioned by Greenans Products Ltd., Jonny at North Design Works took the initial inventor's flatpack steel idea and came up with a simple design using a combination of HDPE and galvanised steel. The idea was to (1) eliminate all tools from DIY build-sequence, aiming toward a 2 minute assembly time (2) Minimise storage footprint and weight, thus reducing transport costs and ensuring the product could be manufactured anywhere globally in high volume. In addition, North Design Works ensured that the basic design would work well for vacuum forming, rota-moulding and injection moulding, allowing Greenans to seamlessly ramp-up production without prematurely committing to expensive tooling costs. For more information and pictures of the finished product, visit the client section at www.northdesignworks.com. SmartBunker® has won awards at Beta International 2012 and was nominated for an Innovation Award at Spoga 2013. Available to buy now at www.thesmartbunker.co.uk

Modelica Evolution - From My Perspective

38:04
This keynote speech by Dr. Hilding Elmqvist was recorded by Modelon on 11 of March 2014 at the 10th International Modelica Conference in Lund, Sweden. Dr. Elmqvist tells the story of Modelica from a personal perspective. This story covers the history of Modelica from the 1970s to the present day, as well as his outlook and perspective on the current state and future development. Dr. Elmqvist envisions an increasingly large role for Modelica and discusses novel product design processes with examples from automotive suspension design. He elaborates on efficient simulation of large scale systems, coupling between Modelica and 3D, and the use of Modelica as an architectural language. Dr. Elmqvist shares his thoughts on the complementary Functional Mock-up Interface (FMI) open standard with important remarks and recommendations for its use and evolution. A must see for anyone with interest in Modelica and FMI in particular and model-based product development in general! On April 15, 1976, Hilding Elmqvist had an idea: create an object-oriented modeling language allowing differential equations and physical connections between subsystems. Elmqvist’s Ph.D. thesis in 1978 entitled “A Structured Model Language for Large Continuous Systems” from the Department of Automatic Control, Lund Institute of Technology, contains the design of a novel object-oriented and equation-based modelling language, Dymola, and algorithms for symbolic model manipulation. In 1996 Dr. Elmqvist, based on his work, took the initiative to organize the international effort to design the next generation object-oriented language for physical modelling. This step led to the birth of Modelica, now recognized as the de-facto open standard for modeling and simulation in multi-domain systems engineering. Now almost 40 years after the original idea, Modelica has positioned itself as a key technology in the rapid industry change towards model-based design and virtual prototyping and testing. Modelica today is a technology to revolutionize product development! See also the companion paper "Modelica Evolution - From My Perspective". Dr. Elmqvist is Chief Technology Officer for Systems at Dassault Systèmes and the chief architect of the Multi-Engineering Modelling and Simulation software for Modelica used in Dymola Product Line and CATIA Systems DBM. He is also responsible for Technology within the board of Modelica Association.

The Role of Intellectual Property in Product Development

02:37
Promoting Successful Translational Research: http://launchpad.ucsf.edu. Dr. Karin Immergluck, Associate Director of Licensing at UC San Francisco's Office of Innovation, Technology and Alliances, describes intellectual property (IP) and its role in supporting the development of novel technologies invented by university researchers. In healthcare product development, IP represents an invaluable asset for innovators by creating critical barriers to entry for competitors. Without a clear and tangible hurdle to entry, even the most beneficial product will struggle to attract the investment and partnerships crucial to the development and commercialization of healthcare products. LaunchPad is an online resource designed to highlight the experiences and accomplishments of translational researchers at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), and to support them in their efforts to develop beneficial medical products. LaunchPad features videos of investigators, administrators and industry experts sharing their experiences working through five keys to successful translational research—unmet needs, target product profile, collaboration, development plan and organizational support, as well as other resources for researchers. LaunchPad is a project of the Early Translational Research (ETR) program of UCSF's Clinical and Translational Science Institute (CTSI) - grant Number UL1 TR000004. Good dialogue should meet at least one of four basic criteria: 1) Tells us about the world 2) Tells us about the speaker 3) Tells us about other characters, or 4) Moves the plot forward. What is novel food?

03:43
Novel food as such is not really new – throughout history we have added new foods to our diets or introduced new ways of preparing food. As this process continues, consumers need to be sure that any novel food coming to their tables is safe. It is EFSA’s role to carry out a scientific risk assessment of novel food and traditional food from third countries before they are introduced to the EU market. EFSA’s Wolfgang Gelbmann has more details. Subtitles are available in English, French, German and Italian.

Rotoform - University of Cambridge, Student Design Project

02:01
Rotoform uses an innovative rotational moulding machine to produce hollow fibreboard products from a sawdust mixture. Rotational moulding is widely used in plastic manufacturing, with the ability to form thin hollow products allowing lightweight and novel designs. The team has adapted this technology, using an original machine to maximise spinning speeds. Combining this capability with the use of sawdust allows Rotoform to produce a similar range of fantastic products but using eco-friendly fibreboard materials Using sawdust is part of what makes Rotoform unique. Sawdust is a waste material – 0.4 million tonnes are produced and disposed of every year. Rotoform takes this sawdust and enables the production of eco-friendly products. Achieving the rotational speeds necessary to use the viscous sawdust mixtures was the most significant challenge the team had to overcome. Traditional rotational moulding machines reach rotational speeds of 60 rpm. Rotoform has designed a more rigid machine, which employs powerful motors allowing stable, high speed rotation. Development of the optimal mixture required lengthy testing, but the ideal ratios of fibres, PVA and water were finally found. This allowed us to minimise drying times and maximise the strength of the fibreboard. A multitude of shaped products can be formed: lampshades, lunchboxes, fruit bowls, stationery pots, etc. The ability to change the inner surface of the mould gives Rotoform a unique selling point. Additionally fibreboard is easily machined and coated, giving the opportunity for post-forming shaping and finishing methods that would be impossible with existing rotationally moulded polymer components. The use of waste material combined with the ability to form unique, monocoque fibreboard structures enables Rotoform to produce exciting premium products which would be difficult to manufacture in any other way. Sustainable Energy Projects - Product Design

02:37
Principal investigator Leo Salemi's series of sustainable energy projects had to apply commercially available computer technology in order to detect energy onto the Kortright Centre's Archetype House. Novel algorithms were deployed and developed by Salemi's team to control and report the buildings heat, lighting, and cooling resources. Salemi's team also had to conduct further testing of the solar-tracking design and to advance their development of algorithms for energy use and control. With Salemi's advancements, the Kortright Centre's solar panels will capture 30-40% more light as a result of Salemi's applied research.
