I've read about a half dozen books, scores of blogs/internet articles searching for reasonable advice and have had some success. The real test is "does the item sell?" And that's the trickiness of my chosen business. I make homemade or home improved gift items for girls and ladies. Most of my customers buy only for themselves. Is pricing the issue or is it marketing? How would you suggest I determine which is the issue?

Is your product comparable to theirs? Is it better? Is it worse? Do you have the same feature sets? Do you have fewer features? If your product is easier to use, it has all the same features, and it's higher quality, you can price your product at the same price as your competition or higher. Now, if your product has fewer features than the competition or your service has fewer features, it's not as good, you don't want to be in the same price point. Ideally, you want to be lower. It's just common sense, right? 1:41 Optimal Price Tip #2 Now, the second tip I have for you and this is if you wanna maximize how much income you're making and profit versus capturing the majority of the market because the first tip I gave you, if you wanna put your price lower than the competition when your product's better, it's a great way to gobble up their market share but on the flip side, if you're trying to optimize for profitability, what you wanna do is split test your pricing. You can use Crazy Egg, and you can use Optimizely, VWO. Pick A/B testing tool. Create two pages of your product or service at different price points and keep playing with the price. You can increase it, and you can decrease it. Usually, you want to start off increasing it, and you want to see, alright, can I generate the same amount of sales with the higher price point? If you can, then you want to go with the higher price point then you don't want to stop there just because you got more sales on the front end. Manufacturer Price Sheet: Material, Labor, Overhead & Profit

The following video breaks down how a manufacturer should come up with a price for industrial finished goods. First, the company must account for its material costs and apply a 5 percent indirect cost to that portion of the manufacturer's price sheet. This 5 percent is meant to offset overruns in production and or additional costs of financing inventory and material purchases. Second, the company must account for its labor relative to each operation performed to turn a raw material into a finished good. The calculation involves defining the operation and applying the labor cost to both the setup time in manufacturing and the actual run time. Third, all labor costs are added in order to come up with a complete total for all the costs of manufacturing a given product. Those costs are then followed up by the company's overhead, which is calculated by taking its indirect expenses divided by its direct expenses. Indirect expenses are those expenses that are in addition to the the costs needed to produce a part. Direct expenses are exactly that. These include the costs involved or expenses involved in manufacturing the part. Finally, the company adds its mark-up in order to secure a profit on the sale. Profit is critical because it helps to fund the company's pursuit of new product introductions and secure its long-term future. Module 6- Pricing Products This section is on pricing products for retailers, for service businesses, or for manufacturers. Those are the three main business categories that businesses encounter, but what we're going to deal with today will be the manufacturing side. It seems to be the most complicated part, and the lessons lender in this section will certainly be applicable to a service business or a retail business. Starting a business has its own challenges when calculating your minimum selling price. Arguably, the manufacturing has more variables when calculating selling price. So that what we're going to look at here, a manufacture company needs to deal with the following key areas in order to develop the pricing strategy. First of all, they need to deal with raw materials. They're going to have to deal with labour costs, overhead costs, and profit. "Profit's" also referred to as "return on investment." With all these areas are pretty self explanatory. There should be some cautions that are needed to be dealt with in each category, though. Raw materials, be sure to include all costs, such as freight, insurance, those things that expenses that to get your product to your manufacturing facility. Don't forget to count the non useful waste; for example, the things that you've cut off and throw away. You've paid for it, but it's still a cost to you even though it doesn't go into the finished product. Under "labour," one of the key areas that entrepreneurs tend to forget are such things as WCB costs, employer's EI and CPP costs, Employment Insurance and Canada Pension Plan, vacation pay, the cost of statutory holidays, and any other benefits that you provide to your employees. These combined, can easily total 15 to 20 per cent of your labour costs, and they need to be added into your production costs. For yourself, make sure you count all of your time. Include the evening phone calls, the time you spent setting up your facility so your employees can work efficiently, the time you spend marketing. And if you're going to work for 10 hours a day, you should at least be compensated for that. You'd pay an employee, so why not pay yourself? How do you decide how much to pay yourself? Well, ideally, start with a personal budget. Figure out all of your personal expenses as what you need out of this business, and then go and add 20 to 25 per cent on top of that to cover the monthly costs that unexpected surprises. Allow for the usual rent, utilities, auto expense, medical and such, but don't forget important things like birthday and Christmas gifts, and those annual insurance bills that tend to sneak up on you. You have more risk than anyone else in this business, so you should be paid more than even your more most skilled employee. Take a rate that your employees would earn and add 25 to 30 per cent for yourself. If you don't require it, you can always reinvest the surplus. http://www.driveyoursuccess.com Do you need your salespeople to better defend your pricing? Are you tired of them constantly giving in to a customer's demand for lower prices? If so, then this video will help your sales team. The video provides six areas where your salespeople can get your customers to focus on something other than the sticker price of your product. Here are the six strategies to helping your salespeople better defend your product or service's price. 1) Focus on cost-per-use and longevity benefits: If your product lasts longer than the competition, then define that in a dollar value savings for your customer. 2) Quality: Is your quality vastly superior to that of your competitors? If so, then your customer doesn't just save on usage. They also save on inventory costs as your products are less likely to get damage or even fail in service. 3) Can your sales team focus on increased yields and performance? If so, then make sure they use this when discussing pricing. 4) Vendor Managed Inventory (VMI) is a great solution to moving past the price of your product or service. Consignment agreements allow you to ship large volume of product to your customers without them having to pay for it all at once. Instead, they only pay for what they use in the month they use it. Your customer reduces their pricing and their per-unit freight costs on incoming shipments which results in lower inventory costs. 5) Finally, what about adopting a loss leader pricing strategy, one where you keep your primary product's pricing as is, but offer your customer a discount on a less important product. You have spent weeks on figuring out your pricing methods and come up with strategy and tactics of pricing only to find out customers says your product is too expensive. Two Reasons why the customer would think that: 1: They don't have the money to pay 2: They think they are not getting enough Value Not having enough money to pay is just an excuse. Think about it. If you are selling a SaaS fashion product that costs $20 or $30 or $40 per month. A product that would help customer increase his business. $20-$40 is the cost of going out and getting 2 drinks in San Francisco. The customer clearly has the money to spend but they just want to haggle you for the price and spend that on drinks. Do you really want a client like that? But if they say, "they are not getting enough value," now that is something you need to pay attention to. Talk to and work with your customer and ask them what features they wished the product had, so they will pay for it? Get customer's buy-in and they add those features in the product but DO NOT reduce the pricing.
