In this video, I take you guys thru the entire process of a home studio product photography shoot. I share with you every detail of my setup, every photo I take and how I made it. I give you my camera settings and flash settings. I also show you my mistakes and how I corrected them.
Product photography requires patience. This is not a quick process and there's a bit of set up involved. There's also the mentality. Taking your time to get your exposure just right is critical to getting the right shots.
In this video, I demonstrate the amazing Cactus RF60 speedlites and V6 transceivers using a 4-speedlite setup. The flexibility and power you have with this kind of setup is amazing. Being able to control power to each of your speedlites from the top of the camera is so important, especially when you're working alone with a lot of lights.
These Cactus flashes and transceiver - receivers, have built-in radio transmitters so they can all send and receive signal. You can set up to 4 groups of flashes in multiple channels, all of which you control a the touch of a button or turn of a dial.
Another amazing thing about the Cactus V6's is that they come pre-loaded with Canon and Nikon profiles for many of their popular flashes. In this video, I'm using Nikon SB-800 flashes on Cactus V6's as receivers and able to control the power with the V6 on my camera. AMAZING. And control flash power to the Cactus RF60's as well.
This video is chock full of killer tips and nuggets. I pop a lot of tips on the screen to help along with the learning process.

In this video we go through our Top 3 Continuous Lighting Options for Product and Flat Lay Photography or Videos
We discuss our three different options including Compact Fluorescent Bulb Double Softbox Lights, Aputure AL-528W LED Panels and the Spectrum Aurora Gold Luxe LED Ring Light.
When taking product photos or flat lays, it's important to get the lighting right for an evenly lit shot. Different continuous lighting options provide different results. A quick breakdown of the three we recommended include:
Compact Fluorescent Bulb Double Softbox Lights
Pros
- Relatively inexpensive solution
- Large softbox for a soft throw of light and less harsh shadows
- Ideal for small or large products / flat lays
Cons
- Not as energy efficient therefore bulbs don't last as long
- Produce a little heat when left on for extended periods
- Not dimmable - simple on/off switch
Aputure AL-528W LED Panels / LED Panels in General
Pros
- Energy efficient and about 8-10x longer lasting that fluorescent bulbs
- No heat production when left on for extended periods
- Can be battery operated / portable
- Dimmable to control the light intensity
Cons
- More expensive than fluorescent bulbs
- Harsher light if not used with softboxes or a light a diffuser
Spectrum Aurora Gold Luxe LED Ring Light
Pros
- All the advantages of LED panels with being more energy efficient, no heat production, can be battery operated and dimmed
- Some LED Ring lights are colour temperature adjustable between 3200-5500k so you can fine tune the colour temperature to suit the shot
- The round catch light provides a nice even light for most shots.
- Being a ring shape, it allows you to shoot through the ring light without obstructing the light and create shadows.
Cons
- Since the ring light is direct light onto the subject (typically positioned front and centre), reflections and hot spots are more prominent on reflective items. Diffusers are available to avoid this
Overall we find that LED Panels and the Spectrum Aurora LED Ring Light provides the ideal continuous lighting solution for most product photography and flat lay photography scenarios. Being able to control the intensity of the light, not producing heat when used for extended periods and the ability to be battery operated to use on-location or outdoors if required make LED lights versatile for most situations.

Learning photography, especially professional photography can be a real challenge especially when you're using a lot of studio lights and trying to capture a specific emotion of a photography scene.
Here's a great photography studio product shoot tutorial using multiple lights.
Capturing the right emotion for this type of shot can be a bit of a challenge so I explain each step, one at a time as I build up to the final image.
Enjoy the tutorial & please share with your photography friends.

If you don't want to spend ridiculous amounts of money getting product photos and you still want a clean, professional result, this video should help a bit. I show you how I set up and shoot as well as a quick Adobe lightroom tutorial to get clean white backgrounds in your photos. I've shot hundreds of products from our makeshift basement studio and I have a quick, efficient process in editing that allows me to not have to spend too much time getting products up on our site. I'll link my equipment down below:

Product photography requires a great deal of work in order to get the shot just right. A product shot is crucial in conveying a products use and/or message. They are the photos you see online with any retailer, in a magazine or on a billboard. Gear varies from product-to-product, but the fundamentals are almost always the same. Even if you’re not photographing products, the techniques used for product photography are something that almost everyone can benefit from and implement within their own photography.
Join us for a photo session, which will include product photography, the fundamentals of lighting, color management, and much more!

This is a simple setup and is great fo all sorts of simple product photography, with the camera set on a tripod it does not matter how long the exposure is so long as the lights are lighting the product. It is important to kill any ambient light as this can effect the image, if the item is reflected be careful as the scene will be reflected in it.
