Not a shot has been fired so far, but Russia is using its superior force to intimidate Ukrainian troops in an attempt to get them to surrender. Russia claims it wants to stabilize the situation on the peninsula, which has a large Russian population, but Ukraine's new government regards the move as an occupation of its sovereign territory. Later that day, a video emerged on the internet showing a man purporting to be a Russian army colonel giving orders to troops in eastern Ukraine. Her case has highlighted activists' fears that the softening of Russia's laws applying to domestic violence may be emboldening abusers. A force of several dozen armed private security contractors from Russia operated until last month in a part of Libya that is under the control of regional leader Khalifa Haftar, the head of the firm that hired the contractors told Reuters. It is the clearest signal to date that Moscow is prepared to back up its public diplomatic support for Haftar -- even at the risk of alarming Western governments already irked at Russia's intervention in Syria to prop up President Bashar al-Assad. Haftar is opposed to a U.N.-backed government which Western states see as the best chance of restoring stability in Libya. But some Russian policy-makers see the Libyan as a strongman who can end the six years of anarchy that followed the ousting of Muammar Gaddafi. The presence of the military contractors was, according to the head of the firm, a commercial arrangement. It is unlikely though to have been possible without Moscow's approval, according to people who work in the industry in Russia. Oleg Krinitsyn, owner of private Russian firm RSB-group, said he sent the contractors to eastern Libya last year and they were pulled out in February having completed their mission. In an interview with Reuters, he said their task was to remove mines from an industrial facility near the eastern Libyan city of Benghazi, in an area that Haftar's forces had liberated from Islamist rebels. He declined to say who hired his firm to provide the contractors, where they were operating or what the industrial facility was. He did not say if the operation had been approved by the U.N.-backed government, which most states view as the sovereign ruler of Libya. Asked whether the mission had official blessing from Moscow, Krinitsyn said his firm did not work with the Russian defense ministry, but was "consulting" with the Russian foreign ministry. The contractors did not take part in combat, Krinitsyn said, but they were armed with weapons they obtained in Libya. He declined to specify what type of weapons. A U.N. arms embargo prohibits the import of weapons to Libya unless it is under the control of the U.N.-backed government. Krinitsyn said his contractors were ready to strike back in case of an attack. "If we're under assault we enter the battle, of course, to protect our lives and the lives of our clients," Krinitsyn said. "According to military science, a counterattack must follow an attack. That means we would have to destroy the enemy." Military and government officials in eastern Libya said they were not aware of the presence of the contractors, while Haftar did not respond to a request for comment. Officials in Western Libya, where the U.N.-backed government is based, were not immediately available to comment. The Russian foreign ministry said it was working on a response to Reuters questions bit had not commented by Friday. MOSCOW'S PROXIES Underscoring Libya's volatility, Haftar's forces have this week been fighting to regain control over the Mediterranean oil terminals of Es Sider and Ras Lanuf, which a rival faction seized earlier this month. Russia has a record of using private military contractors as an extension of its own military. In Syria, military contractors have been widely used in combat roles in conjunction with Russian regular forces and their Syrian allies, according to multiple accounts given to Reuters by people involved in the operations. Moscow has not acknowledged using private contractors in Syria.

In 2014, Ukraine was under siege and the military was unprepared. Desperate, the government urged anyone to get to the front and fight the Russian-backed separatists. As the war drags on, Ukraine claims their military is now in control and the volunteers have all been disbanded. But we tracked down some rogue volunteers still out there fighting, not prepared to hand over their weapons anytime soon. Subscribe to our channel: http://goo.gl/9CwQhg For copyright matters please contact us at: [email protected] All over the planet, millions of men and women serve in their respective militaries. They fly aircrafts, sail ships and drive around all sorts of vehicles. Of course, with so many people working in such high stress environments there’s bound to be some sensitive images that get captured by a camera or two. While the government and military leaders would love to have all embarrassing and sensitive images erased, occasionally one of these leaks out into the “real” world. Ahead we’ll start you off with some pictures snapped from a US nuclear submarine which appear to show a UFO hovering over the ocean in 1971. While we’d like to think that all military equipment works properly, leaked pictures and video from Russia show that this isn’t the case when a high-end missile system malfunctions dramatically. Every military puts their young recruits through some tough training. Then there’s Belarus where leaked images show soldiers living in quarters with no warm water and no showers. Heading on over to North Korea we see some evidence of the Gulag system that Kim Jong-Un would prefer you didn’t know about. For a few years now, separatists and Ukrainian forces have been fighting in eastern Ukraine. Russia has constantly denied any formal involvement, although personal photos taken by Russian soldiers clearly show the truth. Back in North Korea, the government loves to portray its army as strong and unified. Leaked images showing troops scavenging wood and laboring in fields suggests otherwise. Even the US military fears leaked images. The classic example has to do with images of US soldiers abusing prisoners and detainees in prisons all over Iraq and Afghanistan. Back in Russia, we’re not so sure Vladimir Putin would want the world to see some of the military photos that have come out involving very young boys training as soldiers. Speaking of training, being the most powerful military in the world means your troops must train a lot. But accidents do happen as one photo from a tank ground proved in somewhat comical fashion. Finally, we’ll top it all off with the inevitable case of leaked images involving men and women in various states of undress. While this is a huge issue in the US right now, it turns out the Israelis have been at it for a while. The battle between Ukrainian forces and pro-Russia separatists (DNR) for Donetsk Airport has raged for months, bringing significant losses on both sides. In late January, the airport fell to the DNR, ending Ukrainian forces’ hold on the site. The now unrecognizable airport lies in ruins. VICE News travelled to Donetsk Airport, a once modern facility now reduced to rubble after months of fighting, to discuss with DNR fighters the battle for, and the future of, the strategically important site. Subscribe to VICE News here: http://bit.ly/Subscribe-to-VICE-News In our latest dispatch from Ukraine, VICE News correspondent Simon Ostrovsky arrives at a scene in Kiev where a group of Euromaidan activists are being detained by a group of men from the Kiev 1 Battalion — a volunteer policing unit made up largely of former Euromaidan activists. The activists have held their camp at Kiev’s Independence Square since this past winter, and were apparently also occupying a restaurant near the square — until the Kiev 1 Battalion was called upon to remove them. Amid differing versions of the story, it becomes clear that a twist in the Ukraine conflict is emerging, as players in the revolution are showing signs of turning against each other. Jennifer Lopez braved Russia’s bitter cold over the weekend for a private concert, and the fashionista took the opportunity to shop in Moscow’s designer stores. The 46-year-old singer, sporting a black and white fur coat, rolled into the store Aizel in the Russian capital on Saturday night and treated herself to some designer accessories.
