Shooting the AR-15, the M1-A, & the SKS at thick steel: a close-up perspective. Shots were taken from behind a large tree at approximately 40 yards. Guns used: Russian SKS, Colt AR-15 A2, Springfield M1-A Disclaimer: Lots of discussion about 5.56 vs .223 and 7.62 X 51 vs .308. The guns you see me use in this video will fire either one safely, so no issue for me. Never HAS been. Be sure you do your research and shoot what your guns will handle. I have to explain this about once a week, it seems; most people have limited experience shooting 7.62X39 rounds at steel, which is understandable, of course. :-) I've shot both hollow point and FMJ 7.62X39 at soft steel for many years. The FMJ and the hollow point have pretty much the exact same effect on it. HPs are not exactly designed to expand in steel. :-) See my folllow-up video that I finally did all these months later: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-7vxl6jW0bE ------------------- ------------------------ Please visit the Hickok45.com website and check out what the great folks who support us have to offer: BUD’s GUN SHOP, THE NATIONAL RIFLE ASSOCIATION, FEDERAL PREMIUM, SONORAN DESERT INSTITUTE, and TALON GRIPS: http://www.hickok45.com/supporters/ Please consider becoming a Gong Club member at our Patreon Page: https://www.patreon.com/hickok45 JOIN THE NRA at the Hickok45 page and get a nice discount: https://membership.nra.org/Hickok45/Join Hickok45 Store: https://www.bunkerbranding.com/pages/hickok45 Federal Premium: http://www.federalpremium.com/ https://www.facebook.com/federalpremiumammo SDI (Sonoran Desert Institute): http://www.sdi.edu/ Talon Grips: https://talongungrips.com/ UPCOMING “MEET & GREETS” NRA Annual Meeting in Indianapolis, Indiana Friday, April 26th: Sonoran Desert Institute booth 11:00 to Noon. Awesome camera work by Darren filming the SKS shots hitting a 3x3x1/4" mild steel section of angle iron. The SKS can penetrate up to around 3/8" mild steel with ease. - Use caution when shooting at any object like this - -These are not armor piercing rounds- Music by Jimi Sobara "Inside" Creative Commons Licensed

Brian was able to make a few hits on the 8x8" steel at 400 yards with his SKS, but I only got one on camera. Picking up the plates with those iron sights is nearly impossible. The AR15 is a RRA 20" Varmint A4 with a Sightron Big Sky 6-24x42mm scope. It's pretty neat hearing the difference in sound these bullets make on the target camera and the shot delay. --------- points to remember ------- replicate what the internal magazine does as far as position and orientation of the cartridges. you had better be using that caliper tool to measure every thing to the thousandths of an inch. (load rounds in the mag and measure how far the point of the bullet sticks above the mag as well. some wiggle is good cartridges need to be pointed straight laterally (parallel to bore axis and centered) magazine contact points thin the bottom of the bolt back of cartridges 1 - 0 mm in front of ejector ( but below it in elevation of course) the space to dremel out under the chamber is only about a tenth of an inch deep. the height of that pocket should be just a little more then the lug (width too) you must weld a plate to catch the bottom of the lug. that plate must rise a mm or so into the mag well. if your good with your hands and you follow my list i estimate for you it will be a 10 - 20 hr experience. diamond engraving dremel bits a excellent choice for this project. cheap at Harbor Freight Tools. I have a SG works bullpup kit on my sks. because of the position of the 2nd trigger and its grip, only 30 rd and below metal mags are short enough to clear the grip and insert. and since i made a custom upper barrel shroud/rail with custom apparatus built into it to ensure a rock solid secured weapon in it's new furniture (i wasn't satisfied with the one it came with), it is a bitch to remove. And that is the reason you didn't get the other mags demonstrated. remember the machining tolerances back then were horrible. don't count on symmetry ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- the list ------------------------------------------------------------------ 1. Buy 3 different magazines (come to a conclusion whether they are all suitable quality for you, fitting one might compromise the quality of the others) 2. dremel only a tenth of an inch deep under the chamber 3. dremel all the lips away that are where the mag lips will be. (be generous) the forward part of the lips, bottom side, is what will determine the elevation of the front of the magazine. so dremel the mag well back before messing with that so you can start inserting the mag and grinding where needs to be for proper fit and function. 4. dremel the mag well back. Probably about half the lobe that secures the front of the trigger mechanism will need to disappear. (remove front bolt catch) if you end up grinding your mag well crooked, use JB weld as a filler. make sure it is warm when you mix it (put the tubes under hot water for a bit) and letting it cure for two or three days will give it a hardness of around hardened aluminium. which i promise you is excellent enough. 5. remember the 3 critical contact points for the mag and dremel accordingly. remember to keep the rounds centered and straight. the back mag lug will be the chief orienter. it has the most control. ensure the bolt contacts the cartridges on each side of the mag at the same elevation this will keep your end product from being canted. 6. grind the lower part of the bolt. remember almost the entire bolt must pass through the mag. 7. during all this you should be testing and grinding. 8. make the chair (or U channel) for the rear mag lug roughly. weld it into place then file it to perfection. i recommend putting 2 grooves in the bottom of the channel when all said and done as a place for debris. 9. weld the front plate in to catch the front lug and file to satisfaction. Be wary of warping. 10. file grooves in stuff for debris 11. grind out that front pin on the trigger assembly but leave the outer portion as pegs so it still secures the same. also i recommend creating a rudimentary "funnel" for the mags rear lug. just a bit of filling will do. filling some of the front trigger assembly might also be necessary. if your pin is a loose fit, go to home depot. they have some round bar stock that is just a tiny bit too big. cut the length you want, then file an incline one side a bit, the place in the hole and press it in with some channel lock pliers. the crappy annealed metal from home depot will just shave of to the side and give you a great fit. it will never fall out. 12. make the mag catch as i described and showed in the video. remember to make it a little too big so you can file it to perfection. you can buy a new spring at ace hardware that it too long and cut it to size. i believe it is spring #24. i recommend inclining the surface the mag lug slides on (not seen in this video) polish with fine sandpaper. 13. recommend epoxy on welds and as a filler to protect from corrosion, also bluing for flat surfaces. 15. file a steep wedge on the sides of the bottom of the bolt at the back of the bolt were the feed lips of the mag sit around the bolt, This will guide the mag feed lips around the bolt and make the mag far easier to insert.

Hi, this is my quick summary of the SKS rifle. Nothing special, it's a common rifle, but alot of fun, and surplus ammo is cheap and plentiful, it shares it's cartridge, 7.62x39mm; with the more common AK-47 which replaced it, the AK being more economical to produce with it's stamped sheet steel receiver and has a detachable high-cap magazine which became "de rigueur" for future assault rifles.

This video is a follow-up to our first Steel Eating video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dx_SfG34Jpo People often comment that FMJ ammo in 7.62X39 would have penetrated much more dramatically than the hollowpoint ammo we used. It was just "chance" that we used HP ammo in the first video; we just grabbed a few rounds from a box and hardly noticed or cared. The reason why we didn't care that much is that it doesn't make much difference, if any, in steel. If you think about it, it's not that hard to figure out. Some sort of steel core bullet would, of course, be different. ------------------- ------------------------ Please visit the Hickok45.com website and check out what the great folks who support us have to offer: BUD’s GUN SHOP, THE NATIONAL RIFLE ASSOCIATION, FEDERAL PREMIUM, SONORAN DESERT INSTITUTE, and TALON GRIPS: http://www.hickok45.com/supporters/ Please consider becoming a Gong Club member at our Patreon Page: https://www.patreon.com/hickok45 JOIN THE NRA at the Hickok45 page and get a nice discount: https://membership.nra.org/Hickok45/Join Hickok45 Store: https://www.bunkerbranding.com/pages/hickok45 Federal Premium: http://www.federalpremium.com/ https://www.facebook.com/federalpremiumammo SDI (Sonoran Desert Institute): http://www.sdi.edu/ Talon Grips: https://talongungrips.com/ UPCOMING “MEET & GREETS” NRA Annual Meeting in Indianapolis, Indiana Friday, April 26th: Sonoran Desert Institute booth 11:00 to Noon.
