ENGLISH SLANG – 15 trendy fashion words

11:48
Learn new vocabulary about beauty and fashion. Just like fashion trends, the words we use in English to talk about makeup, clothing, hair, and style, change quickly. The words that are used today are not the same as five years ago. There is a whole world of beauty vloggers and fashion hauls on YouTube. If you’re into fashion, you’ll want to look en point when wearing items from your most recent haul. If makeup is your thing, you’ll be wearing a red lip or using a palette to get a smoky eye. You’ll be sporting balayage or ombre hair (don’t worry -- I’ll teach you how to pronounce those new French-origin words too!). Watch and never forget the boyfriends of Instagram. Then take the quiz at https://www.engvid.com/english-slang-15-trendy-fashion-words/ TRANSCRIPT Hi, everyone. In this lesson we're going to look at trendy fashion words. These are words that I'm hearing used a lot now around our times, so let's have a look through the words and learn them one-by-one so we can sound really cool and fashionable. Let's start with: "en pointe". If something is en pointe, it means perfect, it looks so good. What you're wearing today, that dress, your dress is en pointe. It's so fashionable, it's so, so hot right now. Very similar meaning to something being "on-trend". If we think about the word "trendy", it means fashionable. But to say something is trendy isn't fashionable enough anymore, we have to change it and say: "on-trend". We could also change it and say: "bang-on-trend". If it's bang-on-trend, it's even more now, happening right this minute. Next, if we're talking about makeup... When I was younger we used to talk about wearing lipstick or wearing red lipstick, or a pink lipstick, but now instead of saying the word "lipstick", it's described as: "I'm wearing a red lip today." And the same thing, instead of saying: "eye shadow", "Oh, I bought this eye shadow. It's blue. Look at it on my eyes", you don't say that because it doesn't... Doesn't sound... Doesn't sound fashionable enough, it doesn't sound like you know about makeup. So, what people who know about makeup say is they say: "Oh, today I'm wearing a smokey eye." I'm not wearing a smokey eye, I haven't got anything on, but a smokey eye is when the eye shadow looks grey or dark, and it's most often worn at night when you're going out. You get your eye shadow these days in "palettes". And instead of wearing just one eye shadow, like, wearing a pink eye shadow, the eye shadow palette comes with about... Well, as many as you want I suppose, but from 4 to 12 eye shadows, and what they do is they put on the different eye shadows from the palette. So, they will talk about creating the smokey eye from palette number three, or whatever. Next is a makeup term that's been around for a few years. This makeup term came from when the Kardashians got famous because the kind of makeup Kim Kardashian would use was a kind of makeup that shades her face to give it a certain... To make it look like there's more shadow on the face and a more dramatic kind of foundation, which is done with different brushes. It's a kind of makeup technique called "contouring". Apparently it comes... Apparently it's a makeup technique that's been around for ages, but before, drag queens used to use it, men who... Men who were still men, but dressed up as women mostly for performance and being in shows and things like that. So it originally comes from there. And I did experiment with contouring. I once watched a few too many YouTube videos, and it all went terribly wrong, so moving on from contouring. Next we have "drugstore makeup". In England we don't have drugstores, we have pharmacies where you go and buy your medicine, and you can buy toiletries, but we don't have drugstores. We have chains of drugstores, for example, Boots or Superdrug, and you can go in there and buy makeup, but we never call those places drugstores. Yet, when people talk about makeup now, the younger generation, they will... They will talk about buying drugstore makeup, which means the kind of makeup that only... Only costs you a few pounds to buy, it's not the really, really expensive makeup, and you can... You can buy it easily, close... Close... Close where you live. So, drugstore makeup is the kind of makeup you can do that doesn't cost you so much money as the really expensive brands. So that's an American term, but it's being used a lot here now in England. The next... The next two terms are about hair. These are newer fashionable techniques for dying your hair, and the two words come from French. In the English pronunciation we'd say: "balayage".

Vocabulary: How to talk about ADVANTAGES and DISADVANTAGES

06:35
http://www.engvid.com/ In English, we often need to talk about the advantages and disadvantages of something. You will definitely need to do this at work, on tests such as the IELTS and TOEFL, and also in everyday conversation. In this lesson, you will learn words that have the same meaning as "advantage" and "disadvantage", such as "drawback", "downside", "positive aspect", "benefit", and many more. After watching, take our quiz to make sure you understood. There are many advantages to watching this video! Come and improve your vocabulary by learning these synonyms in a very short time. http://www.engvid.com/vocabulary-advantages-disadvantages/ TRANSCRIPT Hi, there. My name is Emma, and in today's video, I am going to teach you some new words. I'm going to teach you some words that mean "good" or "advantage" and some words that mean "bad" or "disadvantage". Now, these words are very, very important if you are planning on writing the TOEFL test, the IELTS test, if you plan to go to university or college, or just for general conversation. Okay? So it's very important you learn multiple ways to talk about advantages and disadvantages. Okay. So let's get started. First of all, I would like to teach you some synonyms of the word "advantage". Okay? And maybe, we can work on your pronunciation. You can repeat after me as I say each word. So my first word here is "advantage", which most of you probably know. It means -- similar to "good". "An advantage of living in Toronto is you get to meet people from all over the word." Okay? So it's a good thing. Similarly, a "benefit" is another good thing. It has the same meaning as the word "advantage". "A benefit of living in Toronto is you get to eat food from all over the word." Another word we could say is "is positive aspect". "A positive aspect of living in Toronto is you get to visit the CN tower, which is a very interesting building." "A good point about living in Toronto is we have a great transportation system." For those of you who live in Toronto, you might think of that as a joke. Okay. "An argument in favor of living in Toronto is the people here are very polite and friendly." Okay? So these are all considered good things about living in Toronto. We can use all of these words to describe the things we love about Toronto. Okay? So I want you to take a moment to think about your city or your village or your town. What could you say that's about it about where you live? Can you think of an advantage, a benefit, a positive aspect, a good point, an argument in favor of where you live? Okay? So now, let's look at some of the bad things, the disadvantages. Okay? So the first word we'll use is "disadvantage". Let's think about living in a city in general. "A disadvantage of living in a city is -- maybe it's very busy." Maybe it's very noisy. Okay? So these are problems with living in a city. "A drawback of living in a city" -- again, you could say it's crowded. There's too much pollution. These are drawbacks. Some people have an objection to living in a city. Maybe there's not enough green space; there's not enough environment living in a city. "A negative effect of living in a city is -- maybe you feel stressed out." Maybe you have a lot of stress because of all the noise. "A downside of living in a city is -- maybe, you know, you're not getting fresh air because of the pollution." "A frequent criticism of living in a city is, again -- maybe it takes a very long time to get anywhere if you live in a very big city." Maybe there's a bad transportation system. So this might be a frequent criticism. Now, for this word specifically, I really want to work on the pronunciation because of this "ism". I know a lot of students from Brazil, a lot of students from South America, Central America, and Europe pronounce this a little bit differently than we do in English. So we would say "criticism". Okay. Can you say that? "Criticism". Okay? So this actually almost becomes like "izum". Okay? So that would be a frequent criticism. Finally, we can also talk about "an argument against". "An argument against living in the city is -- maybe you can't have farm animals." Maybe you love chickens and hens and pigs, but in the city, you can't have them. Okay? So these are all disadvantages of living in a city or disadvantage words. Whereas these are all advantage words. Okay. So let's do a couple of practices with you. I want you to fill in this blank spot with one of these words. Okay? So let's start with positive. So I want you to say this out loud. So pick one of these. "Blank -- of living in a city is it's exciting." "A good point of living in a city is it's exciting." "A benefit of living in a city is it's exciting." Okay?

Talking about CLOTHES in English: Vocabulary about SHIRTS

05:28
http://www.engvid.com/ In this practical vocabulary lesson, I look at words associated with shirts. There are more than you think! The nouns include "collar", "pocket", "cuffs", "sleeves", and "buttons". Also, learn how to use the verbs "do up", "button up", "unbutton", "undo", "roll up", and "pop" in relation to dress shirts. Watch this easy lesson, and do our quiz to test your understanding of this clothing vocabulary. http://www.engvid.com/english-vocabulary-shirts/ TRANSCRIPT Hey, everyone. I'm Alex. Thanks for clicking, and welcome to this lesson on "Talking About Dress Shirts". So, here, I have a dress shirt. It is being held up by my wonderful assistant, Steve, the spider. Thank you very much for your help today, Steve. I'll take you out to your favourite restaurant afterwards. And dress shirts are also known as button-up shirts. So, today, what I would like to do is just go over some of the basic parts of a dress shirt, as well as talking about some of the verbs that we associate with dress shirts, and, well, lots of clothing in general. So this information can be used in a lot of different situations when talking about clothing. So, we'll start from the top, and we will work our way down. So, from the top, we have the collar of the shirt. So this is called the collar. Now, two verbs that we often use with collars are: "Fix your collar", or: "Pop your collar". Now, again, "to fix your collar" this means that maybe your collar is up on one side, like this, or there's something wrong with it. You can just use the verb "fix". Fix your collar. Okay? Now, "to pop your collar" is to do this, to put it up, because it looks so cool and ridiculous. So maybe not in the context of dress shirts would you pop your collar, but the verb is "pop". Do you like this look, Steve? Yeah, I don't really like it either. So I'm going to fix my collar and put it back to normal. Now, here we have a pocket. So, simply put, you can put things in your pocket. And this part of the shirt, these are called your sleeves. Now, again, shirts can have long sleeves or short sleeves. So, again, it can have long sleeves or short sleeves. Here, you have two expressions that I put: "Roll up" and "roll down". So if it's time to work hard, you can say: "Time to roll up your sleeves." So to roll up your sleeves is to do this. To roll them down is to put them back down. And again, you can think about many contexts where you roll up your sleeves. So if you have to go to the doctor and donate blood, or if you have to, you know, it's really hot, you need to roll up your sleeves. Or if you just say: "You know what? It's time to work hard. Let's roll up our sleeves." And here we have cuffs. So, this part of the shirt, these are called your cuffs. And finally, we have the buttons. So your shirt has buttons everywhere here. Right? Buttons, buttons, buttons, buttons, and more buttons. Now, let's continue talking about buttons by talking about some of the verbs and actions that you can do with buttons. It's very exciting. I promise. Here we go. Okay, you ready, Steve? So, buttons. Exciting stuff. Now, you can see in this shirt, the top button is not buttoned. So if someone's button is not buttoned, you can say: "Your button is undone." or: "Your shirt is undone." Now, in this situation, you can also give advice to, you know, put the button how it's supposed to be. And we have a couple of phrases that we can use to do this. So, you can say: "Button your shirt up." You can also say: "Button up your shirt." So, this is a phrasal verb, to button up. And it's a separable phrasal verb, so you can put the object in the middle or at the end. So you can say: "Button your shirt up.", "Button up your shirt." You can also use the phrasal verb to do up. So you can do the buttons up, or do up the buttons. "Do up your shirt." or: "Do your shirt up." Okay? So I'm going to do up or button up the final button, here. It's very difficult when it's a loose shirt. Still got it, Steve? Okay. He's building his muscles right now. He's a strong spider. Now, if you want to unbutton, you can simply say: "Unbutton your shirt." And just like we have the verb "do", you can also use the verb "undo" to remove the buttons. So undo your shirt, or undo the buttons, unbutton your shirt. You can also unbutton one button, unbutton the top button or the bottom button. Whatever it is. Okay, so if you'd like to test your understanding of all of this exciting vocabulary, as always, you can check out the quiz on www.engvid.com. And don't forget to subscribe to my YouTube channel. I'll see you guys later. All right, Steve, we're going to that restaurant now. Let's do it. What is it? The arachnobar, something like that? Okay, anyway, we'll figure it out. See you guys.
Learn 10 times more vocabulary by using Word Webs!

19:46
By using this system, you will learn 10–15 times more vocabulary every time you look up the meaning of a word! You'll also remember more of what you study, because you'll be making mental connections and learning in an interesting way. The secret is using 'word webs'. This powerful learning tool will change the way you learn vocabulary and idioms. In this video, I'll explain what a word web is, how to use it to learn English, and finally I'll do an example word web with you. TAKE THE QUIZ: http://www.engvid.com/learn-10-times-more-vocabulary-by-using-word-webs/ TRANSCRIPT Hi. James from engVid. I would like to help you with your vocabulary. I'm sure that you've looked at engVid and seen many lessons on vocabulary, from drinking, vacationing, weddings, all sorts of things. But when you finish the video, how much do you remember? And how much do you really understand? I'm going to teach you today something I call the... A word web to help you not just remember the words, but truly understand them, and expand or go bigger than that. I did a lesson earlier on, on mind maps where I kind of introduced the idea of mind map, but I didn't really... I don't think I got into it as much that would actually show you how to use it so that you can get better with it. So, I'm going to fix that today. All right? So what we're looking at is called a word web. And if you notice, poor Mr. E is caught up in the web. Nooooo! And I'm going to do the same with you. I'm going to get you... Because this is a spider, and the spider lives in a web, it catches things and those things can never escape. I want to do that with your memory and your vocabulary, teach you in a way that you're going to catch the words and you won't forget. Okay? So I'm going to explain the method here. So we're going to be clear on the method, then we're going to take a word and use it, and show you how it works. Ready? Let's go to the board. All right, so, word web. This is a specific form of mind map which means it's one type. There are many types. Okay? And what they... What they do is they're based on the idea that your brain works a certain way with pictures and colours. So, why don't we use these to help you? And I'm going to do that now. What you will need, you will need a ax... You will need an English to English dictionary. If you really need to get, you know, your language to English, that's fine if you really need it, but English to English dictionary will be preferable because we want to get the definition of the word from an English source, not a translated source. Okay? So maybe we should start with your translating dictionary, and then after take the English word and get an English to English. The translating dictionary will help you understand the ideas, and then the English to English. And sometimes you might notice they don't exactly say the same thing. That'll be interesting for you. Next, you're going to need access to the internet or an idioms dictionary. The idioms dictionary will be for later on, and they have them and you can even go online and look for idioms. But the joke of it is I said access to the internet. Well, my friend, if you're not on the internet, you're not watching this video, so I'm assuming you've got access to the internet. Okay. The next four steps will be this: We're going to take a word... So, we're going to take one word, whatever the word is, we're going to write out the definition from the dictionary. What the dictionary says, not what you think, not an interpretation or somebody giving you sort of their idea of it. From that, we're going to follow... Okay? We're going to write out the words you think of when you see this word. This is called association. I think: "Cat", I say: "Dog". You say: "Milk", I say: "Cow". I associate. This is the words that come to me. I want you to do that because that is part of a natural human process. You think of something, you think of something else. You think of: "Mother", you think: "Love". You think: "Money", "McDonald's"? Probably not. But you get the idea. Okay? So we're going to start with the dictionary definition, then we're going to work with how your brain works. I want to have your mind incorporated or use your way of thinking in this. So you're going to put down your words. So if it was: "Cow", you might put: "Milk, cheese, and steak". Mmm, steak. Then we're going to go out... Back to our dictionary, we're going to look for synonyms. If you open any dictionary usually it will say: "This is the word", and then it will have after it: "Here's a synonym for this word. Here's another one." Synonyms, you know, words that are similar. For instance, height and tall. How tall is the building? What is the building's height? They're not exactly the same, but they can be used in a similar or same fashion sometimes. Okay?
Improve your Vocabulary: Stop saying VERY!

20:06
Using the same word again and again is boring, which is why native English speakers use a wide variety of vocabulary to express their thoughts and feelings. In this vocabulary lesson, I will teach you how to express yourself more effectively by replacing the word "very" with more precise and interesting adjectives. For example, you can replace "very cold" with "freezing". This illustrates your point more precisely. You will sound more natural and intelligent. Using these adjectives on the speaking section of IELTS and TOEFL exams will impress your examiner and improve your score. Watch the video to discover many more examples of this kind of vocabulary substitution. Variety is the spice of life! Next, watch my lesson on how to learn vocabulary FAST: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e_aA-Hc74Ag TRANSCRIPT "Getting from here to there, it's been a long while." Oh, hi. My time is finally here. James from engVid. I can't believe this, this is like the Mirror Universe. If you watch Star Trek, you'll understand; if not, go watch Mirror Universe with Star Trek. I have two, look at them, I have two Mr. Es. In the first one Mr. E is hot, and the first one Mr. E is cold. Let's go to the board. E, what's up? "It's very hot. 35 degrees centigrade." You're right. I see you're wearing your Bermuda shorts. And the second E is saying he's very cold: "It's minus 30 degrees centigrade." Ow, this isn't good. I feel for you. But don't you think there are better ways to say it's very hot or it's very cold? I think so, and in today's lesson I'm going to teach some of you... Not some of you. I'm going to teach all of you how to get rid of the word "very" to describe everything, and use other words which give more information, which will make you sound more like a native speaker and make your writing phenomenal. Oh, "phenomenal"? That's a word for "very good". Are you ready? Let's go to the board. So, today's lesson is on "very". "Very" is a very good word, that's why we use it, but when you're writing, to hear somebody say: "Very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very" is what we call monotonous, it means "mono" as one, "tonous", one tone, one sound - very boring. So let's change that from you being... You know, using "very" because I teach and I notice a lot of students saying things, like: "Teacher, today it's very cold outside." I'm like: -"Yeah, it is." -"And I'm very tired and very hungry." I'm like: "Okay, okay." It's like being punched in the face again and again, and I just want to say: "Stop with the 'very'. Use a different word." But it's not fair because "very" is a very good word-there, I did it again-we just need to find other words to make your language sound richer to improve it so you sound more like a native English speaker, and to make it more interesting for you because it will express more of who you are and your ideas in a better way. It makes you unique. You ready? Let's go to the board. You'll notice I put "very" in red because this is something we don't want to do, we don't want to keep saying: "very". We want to change that up. And I'm going to give you a list of words that people or students usually say when they say "very" that I've heard many, many times. And maybe you've done this. And today I'm going to give you singular words to use instead. I'll explain them, just in case they're difficult. Let's start with the first one. People say: "Very rude", instead of saying that, you can say: "vulgar". "Vulgar" means very rude, and if somebody says to me: "Your language is vulgar", I'll probably stop talking because it means it's not right, it's inappropriate, it's very bad. Vulgar. "I don't like your vulgar tone", your rude tone. It's strong. "Very short", another word we say is "brief", which means small. We had a very brief... We had a very brief conversation, a very short conversation. Cool? "Boring". When you say: "Class was very boring today", you can say: "dull". "Dull" means very boring. It also means... See? Here's a bonus when you use these words, stupid. If you say someone is dull, you can say they're very boring, or dull meaning they're stupid. Don't use it like that too often; people don't like being called stupid. And if you say: "He's rather dull, isn't he?" I have to listen for context to mean stupid or boring. Next one, everybody's favourite: "Very good". "Teacher, the food is very good. The lesson is very good. I like this, it's very good." Why don't we change that to the word "superb"? Look carefully at the word "superb", you have the word "super" written inside it. "Super" means what? Above average, excellent, or superb, very good. "The food was superb." People don't usually use this word, so if you tell me when I cook for you that it's superb, I'm telling you right now I will take that as such an amazing compliment. Gentlemen, if you tell a woman she looks superb, she'll be like: "Thank you. Really?" Because no one says it. All right? […]

08:54
Hey Guys ! Whats up ? Welcome to my channel English Tweaks ! In English, there are a lots of Great words to describe fashion. Do you have hard time finding different ways to describe beautiful and attractive things experiences and people. How do you imagine somebody who is cute, gorgeous and good looking and how do native speaker experience these words. There are so many synonyms for beautiful that mean more or less the same thing, but not exactly. The differences are very subtle, but with aesthetic beauty and emotions, we all know how essential it is to be concise and graceful with our communication and understanding. English has so many ways to say the same thing. The 16 Most Common Synonyms For Beauty 1. Cute can be used to describe a dog, a baby, or a person you are attracted to in a romantic or non-romantic way. To call somebody cute is often the first phase of romantic interest. 2. Adorable has the same sense as cute, but it’s a bit stronger. 3. Attractive is the most generic and objective way to say that another person has a pleasing appearance. It does not necessarily denote romantic interest. 4. Good-looking is one of the most common ways to describe a person who is attractive. 5. Beautiful is the classic way to describe a feminine beauty. 6. Handsome is a word that is traditionally used to describe an attractive man. 7. Pretty is similar to beautiful in meaning, but in a more innocent and/or physical way. Pretty, on the other hand, may be more based on physical appearance that can be molded by cosmetics. 8. Gorgeous is another synonym for beautiful that denotes a very powerful physical attraction. 9. Lovely is a synonym for what is generally a feminine beauty that describes an elegant and/or radiant beauty. 10. Exquisite means to be beautiful in a very delicate and refined way. 11. Stunning is a surprising and/or shocking appearance, which supposedly may even cause the loss of consciousness. 12. Foxy is another word that is used in English to describe a very attractive woman or man. 13. Radiant is a bright, or shining kind of beautiful that is specifically used to describe feminine beauty. 14. Sexy is a word that I believe translates into other languages and most people have an understanding of. It means that the person is attractive in a very sexual, sensual way, that they cause excitement. Nowadays, however, when used in a colloquial sense, sexy can sometimes be used to describe exciting, glamorous and/or trendy things, like a “sexy new guitar,” or a “sexy new computer” (similar to chic). 15. Hot is similar to sexy in that it’s an attractiveness that provokes sexual interest or even lust. You can say that “he is hot,” or that “he is a hottie.” Both hot and sexy are slightly objectifying. Here’s a definition from urban dictionary. 16. Babe is noun used to describe a very beautiful woman (or in rare cases, a man). It’s to the same degree as gorgeous, but it’s definitely not as common as it used to be. You’ll certainly see a lot of pop cultural references though in old movies and songs.

Formal & Informal Vocabulary: Using French words in English

11:17
Have you ever wondered why we have so many words for the same thing in English? It's because we used to speak Anglo-Saxon until the French king William the Conqueror invaded us and brought the French language with him. French never became the language of the peasants and ordinary people; it was only spoken in the court of the king and among the powerful. For this reason, French words in English are more formal than their Anglo-Saxon synonyms. In this lesson, we will look at some English history, and I will give you examples of formal and informal words and where they came from. I am fascinated by the evolution of the English language -- how it has developed, changed, and adapted over time. Perhaps English is the world’s number one language for international communication because it always adapts, incorporating new words from different cultures and bringing these into the English language itself. Striking the right register -- knowing the right word to use in the right situation -- is incredibly important in English. English learners often use vocabulary that is more formal than a native speaker would use, so watch the lesson to learn how to correct this, so you can sound more natural when speaking English. https://www.engvid.com/formal-informal-vocabulary-french-anglo-saxon TRANSCRIPT Hi, everyone. I'm Jade. What we're talking about today is a little bit of a history lesson of the English language. We're going to talk about why English has so many synonyms, why we don't just have one word to things, sometimes there's more than one word for it. I'm also going to talk about informal language and formal language, why there's always so much of a choice in English. And the reason is because we always have this split in English between words that come from an Anglo Saxon origin and words that come from a French origin, and it's said that about 30... 30% of words actually have a... Can't speak today. Have a French origin and we still use those words today. And generally, the ones that come from French, they have a more formal quality to them, and the ones that come from Anglo Saxon are more neutral and they're the ones that native speakers use all time when they're speaking just among each other. But first I'm going to recite a little bit of a poem for you because this poem comes from Middle English, and the English that you'll hear is really different to the English that I'm speaking now. It will be like I'm speaking a different language, but what you will hear is the blend between Anglo Saxon words and French words. Okay? So let's see if I remember it. Whan that Aprill, with his shoures soote The droghte of March hath perced to the roote And bathed every veyne in swich licour, Of which vertu engendred is the flour. And I could continue, but I won't. And that comes from a really famous poem in English taken from The Canterbury Tales, and it's the first part of The Canterbury Tales called the general prologue. And it's in Middle English, the time when the peasants spoke Anglo Saxon English-peasants are the poor people-and all the rulers spoke French. And the reason that happened is because in 1066 there was a big battle when a French king of a part of France called Normandy came and defeated the English king at that time, and then he became king of England. So when he became king of England, he brought all his people over and the language of power in England at that time became French. So everybody who was in a position of power spoke French. So in the course the... Every decision-maker in England spoke French. Meanwhile, all the peasants just carried on speaking Anglo Saxon like they did before, and the words that they used and the language they spoke came from Germany and Norway. They were different tribes and before they came over to England. So there were two different languages going on. Plus it was only much later that the two... The two languages blended to become one language that we speak now that we have both, have both Anglo Saxon words and French words in our language. What else is important to say about it? I know there's something I've missed. Hopefully I'll remember what I missed. Oh yes. And because the kings and the ruling people spoke in French and the peasants spoke in Anglo Saxon, I feel like that distinction is still there. So when we're not trying to be formal or official or anything, we use words of Anglo Saxon origin. Only when we're trying to express ourselves in a very elegant way or an official way do we use the French origin words. So even though our language has become one thing, we're still keeping this idea in our language that the French words are sort of higher.

"A powerful agent is the right word: it lights the reader's way and makes it plain; a close approximation to it will answer, and much traveling is done in a well-enough fashion by its help, but we do not welcome it and applaud it and rejoice in it as we do when the right one blazes out on us. Whenever we come upon one of those intensely right words in a book or a newspaper the resulting effect is physical as well as spiritual, and electrically prompt: it tingles exquisitely around through the walls of the mouth and tastes as tart and crisp and good as the autumn-butter that creams the sumac-berry." Learn English Vocabulary: CATS! 🐱 🐈

20:30
Are you a cat lover like me? In this lesson, I will teach you English vocabulary about cat behavior, and also teach you how to describe the personality of cats. I’ll also tell you a few stories about my love of cats. I recommend this lesson to you if you like cats and also if you wish to improve your English listening skills. This is a purr-fect vocabulary lesson for cat people! See how well you understood the lesson by taking the quiz: https://www.engvid.com/learn-english-vocabulary-cats/ Next, watch some other vocabulary videos I've made: 1. TRENDY FASHION WORDS: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UnIwr2vkb94 2. SPIRITUAL VOCABULARY: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=52cixIxTKD8 TRANSCRIPT Hi, everyone. Welcome to my cat lesson. I really love cats, so I'm excited to do this for you today. I'm going to read you a cat poem, I'm going to talk about cat personalities, and I'm going to tell you some stories about my old cat I used to have. Unfortunately, he's dead now, but his name is Mr.... is/was Mr Milo. So, I'll let you know something about Mr Milo as we do the lesson. Let's begin with a poem. This poem is about cat behavior and also about how a cat changes as it gets older. I'll read it to you now. Listen, kitten, Get this clear, This is my chair. I sit here. Okay, kitty We can share; When I'm not home, It's your chair. Listen cat How about If I use it When you're out? So, what happens in this poem is that as the cat gets older, the cat's behavior changes. At first, it's a lovely, sweet kitten, and the cat's owner is in charge. The cat's owner is still the boss, and the cat's owner can say: "This is my chair", when the cat is a kitten; when it's still a baby. Then, later, the power has changed between the cat's owner and the cat. Now, they share the chair; they sit together. The owner sits with the cat, and when the owner goes out, then the cat can sit in the chair by itself. This is when the cat has become a kitty. And then, later, when the cat has become an adult, the power has completely changed and now the cat's owner can't sit in his own chair; he has to ask his cat: "Is it okay if I sit in that chair that you like so much?" when the cat has grown up. So, I really liked that poem about cats, because I think that's one of the main things about their personalities. Unlike a dog that respects you as its master and will always look up to you, that's not guaranteed with a cat. And many cats, as they get older, become very powerful and more powerful even than their owners. So let's look at some cat words now. We've got: "pussy" or "pussycat". The word "pussy" can be a rude word. If we want to say... We can still use it when we're talking about cats, but we have to say it in a sweet way: "pussy". And we can say: "Here, pussy, pussy, pussy" to a cat. It does sound a little bit funny, but you could still say it as kind of a joke or to be sweet. Another cat word is "moggy". A moggy is a cat that... It's not a fancy cat, it's maybe not a very attractive cat; it's a mix of all the different street cats around, and not a beautiful champion cat, but one that you can still love very much. Next we have a "tom" or a "tomcat". This is a male cat. And we have also "pedigree cat". "Pedigree" is a cat that has been bred to look a certain way; to look beautiful. My cat, Mr Milo, was a pedigree cat. He was a Persian cat. He was very, very beautiful, but he wasn't very intelligent as a cat. And perhaps it's true that maybe moggies are more intelligent than... at least more intelligent than Persian cats because they haven't been so inbred to look beautiful. Okay, now let's look at cat behavior. What does a cat do in its general, daily life? First of all, a cat loves to nap. You will often find a cat napping. For example, the cat may nap on a chair, it may nap on your bed. Cats might also do some hunting during the day. So, watch out if there's any wild birds in your garden, or any mice that might be in your garden or in your house because your cat will try to hunt that. Mr Milo was not very good at hunting. No, no, no. It was quite funny. He lived for 17 years, he never caught a bird. He only managed to catch a mouse that was already dying, so it couldn't really... It couldn't really run fast. And Mr Milo was so proud that he... He put his paw on this already half-dead mouse, but that... Mr Milo wasn't... He wasn't much of an aggressive cat. He was just, you know, he was good at looking beautiful, and that was all he did really. Cats also like to groom. "Grooming" is when they lick their... Lick their fur to stay clean. Cats also like to purr. [Purrs] That's how Mr Milo would purr. It was often quite annoying, because he always wanted to do it right there next to your neck, so you would get the feeling of the claws coming out, and also wet-cat breath on your neck and in your ear.
