During one of our tours last season, the best Auroras we've ever experienced played out across the night sky just as the setting sun was settling into bed on February 18th. This clip is one small glimpse at the show we witnessed that night.

On 25th February 2014 Sun produced X4.9 flare which on 27th February caused G2 (KP 6) geomagnetic storm on Earth. It was the brightest aurora display so far during this solar maximum which I could witness with auroral displays overhead in the far north of Scotland. This short movie illustrates what has been seen from latitude 58.3 degrees north.

People across the UK and Alaska USA have been enjoying the celestial display of the aurora borealis - or northern lights. The phenomenon is caused by eruptions on the surface of the Sun, and this most recent activity has been unexpectedly strong.
The northern lights, also known as aurora borealis, occur about 60 or 70 miles above the earth’s surface —about 10 times higher than a jet aircraft flies — and can extend hundreds of miles into space. The most common colour displayed is a brilliant yellow-green, but the aurora borealis can also produce red, blue and purple patterns.
An Aurora sometimes referred to as polar lights or northern lights, is a natural light display in the sky, predominantly seen in the high latitude (Arctic and Antarctic) regions. Auroras are produced when the magnetosphere is sufficiently disturbed by the solar wind that the trajectories of charged particles in both solar wind and magnetospheric plasma, mainly in the form of electrons and protons, precipitate them into the upper atmosphere (thermosphere/exosphere), where their energy is lost. The resulting ionization and excitation of atmospheric constituents emit light of varying colour and complexity. The form of the Aurora, occurring within bands around both polar regions.

Timelapse video compilation of the aurora borealis (northern lights) taken in Fairbanks, Alaska, during the evenings of March 21-22, 2012.
1,705 still frames were captured using a tripod-mounted Canon 5D Mark II and two lenses: EF 16-35mm/2.8L USM and EF 14mm/2.8L II USM. On March 21, the aurora was faint: we were only able to see it by naked eye for half an hour or less during the evening. On March 22, the aurora was searingly bright, and lasted for over 2.5 hours, spanning most of the night sky (leaving only a dark hole to the south).
We shot for hours each night in temperatures ranging from -5ºF to -20ºF. The 5D2 was a champ, and I was able to shoot around 600 pictures on a single battery charge, even in those temperatures! The Canon TC-80N timelapse remote also worked well, although the settings LCDs on both devices became very slow in the cold, sometimes taking a full second to refresh when I changed settings.
The still images were processed and exported in Lightroom 4. Individual clips were assembled in Quicktime 7 and then brought into Final Cut Pro X for editing into a sequence.
Special thanks to Julian and Ildi Cohen (http://juliancohen.com), my photography companions during the trip, to Casey Thompson, a local aurora photographer (http://caseythompsonphotography.com/), for his tips on shooting locations, and to mobygratis.com for music.

In April 2012, I was part of a team of scientists, teachers and students who travelled to Alaska to observe the Northern Lights or Aurora Borealis. Our mission was a unique one - to launch weather balloons up to 100,000 feet loaded with experiments, tracking devices and HD cameras. There are many misconceptions about what causes the Aurora Borealis when it really requires solar winds, magnetic fields and excited atmospheric gases.

The Northern Lights are beautiful and odd and have understandably inspired many myths. The Vikings thought they were a bridge between our world and Asgard where Thor and the other gods live. In another Norse myth, they are the light reflected of the armor of the Valkyries. And people in Finland thought it was the archangel Michael (John Travolta) battling Beelzebub (the devil).
Wrong. Wrong. Wrong. All wrong.
It was the famous early astronomer and recanter of science, Galileo Galilei, who gave the Northern lights the name Aurora Borealis, which means “dawn of the North” in Latin. But it wasn’t until Norwegian scientist Christian Birkeland figured it out in 1896 that the true origin of the auroras was understood.
In the center of the Earth, the molten iron core generates magnetic fields that extend through the crust and into space around the planet, creating what’s called Earth’s magnetosphere. It’s a pretty great thing that Earth has it, because the magnetosphere protects us from all manner of charged particles spit out from the Sun.
The Sun is so hot that it produces plasma (a fourth state of matter) where positively charged atoms (ions) and negatively charge electrons flow freely around one another. These highly charged particles have enough energy to escape the Sun’s gravity and fly out into space, barreling toward Earth at 1 million miles per hour like a shotgun blast of solar hate. This is called solar wind.
When they encounter our magnetosphere, most of these ions and electrons bounce harmlessly off and Earth is saved. But some of these particles make it through the magnetosphere where it’s weakest (at the north and south poles), and when they do the light show begins.
The electrons that make it into our atmosphere interact with some of the elements there, particularly oxygen and nitrogen. The electrons transfer energy to them, exciting them in the process. To calm down, the excited atoms must release some energy, which they do as tiny packets of light called photons -- beautiful, beautiful photons.
Depending on where in the atmosphere the electrons interact with these other atoms, different colors are produced. Oxygen emits a yellow-green color up to about 150 miles in the atmosphere. After that, it turns red. Nitrogen emits a nice blue color about 60 miles up. And don’t forget these colors can blend, which can create glowing pinks, purples and whites. It’s like Miami Beach up there.
This interplay is most vibrant during solar storms, which depend somewhat on the Sun’s solar cycle. And, although these lights can be produced at all hours, they aren’t visible during the day, since the sunlight outshines them.

Experience the majestic phenomenon that is the Aurora Borealis. This video composed of still images and timelapse gives a nice picture of the good fortune we have living in Fairbanks, Alaska where we see the Northern Lights consistently throughout the dark season. The 2013-14 season is projected to be the best in the next decade as the Sun is about to flip it's magnetic polarity bringing with it the peak of the "Solar Max" which will cause stunning Auroras. Check out my weekend trip to Fairbanks! It was a busy weekend all by myself. Not much time to eat or sleep. In fact, I had 13 hours between Thursday morning (due to work and packing before the trip plus the early flight!) and Monday!
The trip was totally worth it! I went to Chena Hot Springs, the North Pole including sitting in Santa's chair, the largest ice museum in the world (Aurora Ice Museum), I saw the Northern Lights, went ice fishing and dog sledding. I experienced so much of the area and enjoyed my time SO much! I can't wait to go back later this year!

The northern lights, also known as aurora borealis, occur about 60 or 70 miles above the earth’s surface —about 10 times higher than a jet aircraft flies — and can extend hundreds of miles into space. The most common color displayed is a brilliant yellow-green, but the aurora borealis can also produce red, blue and purple patterns.
An aurora, sometimes referred to as a polar lights or northern lights, is a natural light display in the sky, predominantly seen in the high latitude (Arctic and Antarctic) regions. The resulting ionization and excitation of atmospheric constituents emits light of varying color and complexity. The form of the aurora, occurring within bands around both polar regions

Northern Lights photographer Frank Stelges shares his passion for capturing the aurora in Fairbanks, Alaska by teaching visitors about the beauty of the phenomenon. "It's something that hits us on a deeper level; it opens people up — they become emotional, and they talk about their lives. It's a great thing when people start feeling like they can share these things." Frank describes the beauty of the nights sky in Alaska and the connect he makes with visitors to his part of the country.
