The recent print closures of magazines such as Look, Glamour and NME portray an industry on the brink of implosion. Yet things look very different in the independent publishing arena - a place where new titles are thriving, albeit under a different definition of success. The story of independent mag publishing in the UK is the subject of Somerset House's latest exhibition. Print: Tearing It Up is an exploration of the indie landscape's history, from the obscure Blast (the modernist zine halted after two issues by an inconvenient war in 1914), the staunchly scurrilous Private Eye and the game-changing Spare Rib, to the likes of Burnt Roti, The Gentlewoman and Gal-dem - products of what co-curator Paul Gorman calls the "new resurgence of independent magazines". After penning a book on The Face, the cultural magazine published from 1980 to 2004, Gorman became aware of the raft of indies emerging from the detritus of the economic crash. Often beautifully produced, the mags provide a tangible antidote to digital proliferation. "Around 2011, 2012 I noticed these magazines emerging - like The Gentlewoman and Mushpit - and I was quite encouraged by the fact they were being published mainly by young women," he told The Drum. "They were anti-corporate, and they had all those values that appealed to me." Henry Robinson Luce (April 3, 1898 – February 28, 1967), was a Chinese-American magazine magnate, who was called "the most influential private citizen in the America of his day". About the book: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0805777814/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=0805777814&linkCode=as2&tag=tra0c7-20&linkId=6ce97385aaad47488a6aa7309878d094 He launched and closely supervised a stable of magazines that transformed journalism and the reading habits of upscale Americans. Time summarized and interpreted the week's news; Life was a picture magazine of politics, culture, and society that dominated American visual perceptions in the era before television; Fortune explored in depth the economy and the world of business, introducing to executives avant-garde ideas such as Keynesianism; and Sports Illustrated explored the motivations and strategies of sports teams and key players. Counting his radio projects and newsreels, Luce created the first multimedia corporation. He was born in China to missionary parents. He envisaged that the United States would achieve world hegemony, and, in 1941, he declared the 20th century would be the "American Century". Nightly discussions of the concept of a news magazine led Luce and Hadden, both age 23, to quit their jobs in 1922. Later that same year, they formed Time Inc. Having raised $86,000 of a $100,000 goal, they published the first issue of Time on March 3, 1923. Luce served as business manager while Hadden was editor-in-chief. Luce and Hadden annually alternated year-to-year the titles of president and secretary-treasurer. In 1925, Luce decided to move headquarters to Cleveland, while Hadden was on a trip to Europe. Cleveland was cheaper, and Luce’s first wife, Lila, wanted out of New York. When Hadden returned, he was horrified and moved Time back to New York. Upon Hadden's sudden death in 1929, Luce assumed Hadden's position. Luce launched the business magazine Fortune in February 1930 and acquired Life in order to relaunch it as a weekly magazine of photojournalism in November 1936; he went on to launch House & Home in 1952 and Sports Illustrated in 1954. He also produced The March of Time weekly newsreel. By the mid 1960s, Time Inc. was the largest and most prestigious magazine publisher in the world. (Dwight Macdonald, a Fortune staffer during the 1930s, referred to him as "Il Luce", a play on the Italian Dictator Mussolini, who was called "Il Duce").) President Franklin D. Roosevelt, aware that most publishers were opposed to him, issued a decree in 1943 that blocked all publishers and media executives from visits to combat areas; he put General George Marshall in charge of enforcement. The main target was Luce, who had long opposed FDR. Historian Alan Brinkley argued the move was "badly mistaken", for had Luce been allowed to travel, he would have been an enthusiastic cheerleader for American forces around the globe. But stranded in New York City, Luce's frustration and anger expressed itself in hard-edged partisanship. Luce, supported by Editor-in-Chief T. S. Matthews, appointed Whittaker Chambers as acting Foreign News editor in 1944, despite the feuds Chambers had with reporters in the field. Luce, who remained editor-in-chief of all his publications until 1964, maintained a position as an influential member of the Republican Party. An instrumental figure behind the so-called "China Lobby", he played a large role in steering American foreign policy and popular sentiment in favor of Nationalist leader Chiang Kai-shek and his wife Soong Mei-ling in their war against the Japanese. (The Chiangs appeared in the cover of Time eleven times between 1927 and 1955.) It has been reported that Luce, during the 1960s, tried LSD and reported that he had talked to God under its influence. Once ambitious to become Secretary of State in a Republican administration, Luce penned a famous article in Life magazine in 1941, called "The American Century", which defined the role of American foreign policy for the remainder of the 20th century (and perhaps beyond). https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Henry_Luce

Short story magazine publishers can be hard to find. To target literary journals that publish short stories, some writers spend countless hours pouring over market books and literary journal websites. So much intense research cuts into a writer's short story writing time! But writers like Nancy Hanway know there's a better way: Writer's Relief (www.WritersRelief.com). Nancy Hanway has placed many of her pieces with short story magazine publishers—and she's also working on a novel to submit to literary agents—all with the help of Writer's Relief. Writer's Relief has been helping authors connect with short story magazine publishers since 1994. Our submission strategists can take on as much or as little of the submission process as our clients prefer. Some clients have us manage their submissions from start to finish—everything from proofreading and formatting short stories to researching short story magazine publishers, to preparing and sending out submissions, to tracking editors' responses and helping with questions that arise about rights and contracts. Other clients simply want us to pinpoint and identify the BEST short story magazine publishers for a given, individual work. Then, they do the rest. Many clients have received major literary awards or nominations because they published their short prose with short story magazine publishers that were identified by Writer's Relief. Some writers list their short story publications on their resumes or CVs. Others publish short stories in hopes of establishing a reputation that will be helpful when approaching literary agents with a book project or novel. For a writer who wants to publish a short story, a critical key to success is targeting the RIGHT short story magazine publishers. Submitting to the wrong publishers can lead to lots of wasted time, frustration, and a loss of enthusiasm for making submissions. To publish a short story, it's important to submit to the short story magazine publishers who are most likely to read and enjoy the work. And that's where Writer's Relief can help. NOTE: Along with short stories, Writer's Relief works with clients in ALL of the creative writing genres, including poetry, memoir, novels, and even popular self-help and how-to nonfiction books. Learn more about how Writer's Relief can help you identify the best short story magazine publishers for your unique work! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WgBtD3yTLL4

In Chapter 10 of 13, fashion stylist Lulu Chen learns how the publishing business works from start to finish while working at Hearst and Conde Nast. While at Conde Nast's Self Magazine, Chen works with writers, art directors, photo departments and fashion directors to create the visuals and narratives behind each story. View more Near Peer career videos from the Capture Your Flag documentary series at http://www.captureyourflag.com Transcript: Erik Michielsen: You’ve had the opportunity to work at some of the largest publishing houses in the entire world including Hearst and Conde Nast, what did those experiences working in those large environments teach you about how magazines get made in big, big ways? Lulu Chen: Well you get to see how things are made and how things come together from start to finish. So, for example, when I worked at Self Magazine I had to produce the photo shoots that went along with the front-of-book stories or the narratives to give the audience a visual of what went along with the story. So it was exciting because you would have to work with the person who wrote the story, you’d have to find out from art what they want to do to how to narrate it the correct way so the audience understands the visual, then you work with other fashion editors to get the clothes in and you work with the photo department to build the team so that you can go on photo shoot. You work with all the different departments in producing the visuals to go along with the stories. So for example, you get a story and you have to narrate it in a visual sense. So you work with the photo department to gather a team of people to go on the photo shoot and you work with the fashion department to get the clothes in to tell the story.
