Streets by VICE: Los Angeles (Sunset Boulevard)

19:21
Sunset Boulevard has become shorthand for what Los Angeles represents in the collective imagination. Most people do not see Los Angeles themselves, and instead imagine the world of fame and affluence they see on their TV screens. However, the reality of Los Angeles is not one glamorous place or setting – instead, it is a gigantic, diverse and complicated city, divided by its disparate neighborhoods. To know it you have to travel from east to west, across colliding communities that evoke both glitz and grit. In this episode of City Guides we drive along Sunset Boulevard, stopping at venues and speaking with native Angelenos about the economic and cultural influences that have defined and transformed their neighborhoods. Exploring Ukraine's Underground Rave Revolution

09:55
The 2014 revolution brought Kiev nightlife to a complete standstill. As protests turned into riots, and government security forces opened fire on protestors, the country fell into crisis. But out of the ashes of revolution has risen a new generation. Slava Lepsheev, who’d lost his job because of the financial crisis triggered by the war, had had enough, and started Cxema, a raw, hard and hypnotic techno rave that he took to whatever semi-legal venue he could set a soundsystem up in. So together with Slava, and the city’s brightest young lights, we followed young Kiev as they prepared for a night at Cxema, from building the venue to watching the sunrise break. What Harajuku Girls Really Look Like | Style Out There | Refinery29

07:50
From Gothic Lolitas to Yoyogi Rockabillies, the Tokyo neighborhood of Harajuku is a wellspring of some of the world's most unique and extreme fashion trends. Rife with restaurants, shops, and cafes, it's a hangout 'hood for the city's youth, whose style is confined to uniforms from elementary school through to high school graduation. And, perhaps to rebel from such strict sameness, they spend their weekends seeing how far they can push the limits. One of the oldest and most pervasive Harajuku style groups is Decora, characterized by a pursuit of kawaii, or "cuteness," which is expressed in massive piles of hair clips, face bandaids, creative layering, and a mishmash of colors and textures. Don't let "cute" confuse you: There's nothing delicate or elegant about Decora. It's bright, it's loud, and it's in your face (or rather, on your face, via a Hello Kitty bandaid). Though the style can appear as frivolous as a Halloween costume, there's a real statement behind the bevy of barrettes. In the face of pervasive group-mindedness, a rigid social order, and cultural reticence, the Decora have figured out a way to break free. In the first episode of our new documentary series, Style Out There, our host Asha Leo travels to Harajuku to meet with street fashion superstars, like 90884 designer Kurebayashi, Junnyan, and Shoichi Aoki, the founder of FRUiTS magazine, to peel back the rainbow-colored stickers and uncover the depth behind Decora. The Graffiti Godfathers of Miami

17:18
VICE meets members of the Miami Style Gods (MSG), a graffiti crew based in Miami, and follows them on a night of “bombing” — leaving their tags on highway signs, walls, garage doors, bridges, and more. Crews like MSG are prolific, and go out of their way to tag as many locations, as many times as possible, no matter what the cost. But with the rise of social media and the gentrification of now art districts like Wynwood, where graffiti is essentially permitted, we are now seeing corporate appropriation of this underground subculture that corporate America once looked down upon that is now changing the graffiti world for good or bad. The Moped Gangs of London: UK Bikelife

21:18
Click here to subscribe to VICE: http://bit.ly/Subscribe-to-VICE Mopeds and teenage boys have gone hand-in-hand since the 1960s. But in the last year UK BikeLife culture – where young scooter riders upload videos of themselves wheelie-ing down motorways and through industrial estates – has exploded, with the scene’s leaders picking up thousands of YouTube and Instagram followers in the process. These British riders are beginning to receive international attention, not least from Baltimore’s notorious dirt bike club, the 12 O’Clock Boys. Although they may lack the CCs of their American counterparts, they’ve done a good job of making up for it with charisma and a dedication to the underdog of the two-wheeled world: the humble moped. In London Bikelife, Daisy-May Hudson lets a nostalgia for the moped gangs of her teenage years get the better of her and travels to industrial estates on the outskirts of London to meet with the underground stars of the UK BikeLife scene. After spending some time at northwest London’s Ace Cafe – an iconic hangout for bikers and petrolheads – Daisy is taken along to one of the group’s big ride-outs, where hundreds of boys take over the roads with their mopeds. Revisiting the Glory Days With One of Japan's Most Violent Biker Gangs

33:06
Japanese motorcycle gangs have wreaked havoc since the 1970s. Known as Bosozuku, these gangs have a violent history, raging war against rival crews and cops. Gang members roamed the highways, sometimes hundreds at a time, with an array of brutal weaponry, customized bikes, and distinct crew jumpsuits. Being part of one of these motorcycle gangs was a frantic lifestyle, one that could easily lead to grievous bodily harm, and death. Youth were recruited from their early teens to join the gangs under the mentorship of an elder. It was of utmost importance to protect the reputation of the gang, to never run from a fight, even when grossly outnumbered. In recent years, with strict laws and police cracking down, Bosozoku have become nearly extinct. Yet for those who were a part of the subculture during its heyday, Bosozoku will always provide a fond memory of the recklessness of youth. The Congo Dandies: living in poverty and spending a fortune to look like a million dollars

25:48
“La Sape” is a unique movement based in Congo that unites fashion-conscious men who are ready to splurge money they don’t really have on designer clothes. Dressing in stark contrast with their surroundings, these elegant ambiance-makers become true local celebrities… but this fame comes at a price. The Republic of the Congo in Central Africa can’t boast of high standards of living. Yet, there are men here who are prepared to spend a fortune on designer suits. They call themselves “sapeurs” – members of the “La Sape” movement. “La Sape” comes from French and stands for “The Society of Ambiance-Makers and Elegant People”. For its adherents, it’s all about style and elegance, the right combination of colours and textures, brand-names and the highest quality materials. They derive true joy from showing off their attire on the streets of Brazzaville – the country’s capital and the centre of the “La Sape” movement. Walking down dusty streets lined with clay houses, they turn heads and feel like kings. And there’s no price they won’t pay for this. In fact, behind the image of success these dandies project, there are often stories of significant financial troubles caused by their extravagant hobby. To afford the price tag of their designer clothes, “sapeurs” have to save, borrow and even steal money, sometimes bringing ruin to their families. But even the grim consequences of their indulgent dressing habits often don’t stop “sapeurs” from spending money they don’t really have. They are in constant competition with each other and investing in their image is more important to them than improving their living conditions. Dressing smartly becomes a true addiction that is very hard to conquer. However, some “sapeurs” do strive to find a balance between looking chic and being reasonable with their spending. They insist that the “La Sape” movement isn’t about designer suits but rather developing impeccable taste. They make an emphasis on learning to dress well but within one’s means. This way, style and elegance will demand fewer sacrifices from their devotees and will be accessible to more sophisticated men. Inside Miami’s Luxury Car Hustle: Fake It ‘Til You Make It

“The car business in general is a tough business. The car rental business, even more so. Anybody who finds out they can make money and drive a Ferrari, I mean, they’re diving in head first,” says Matt Cruz, owner of MVP Exotic Rentals, a legitimate luxury car rental business based in Miami. But when everybody wants to be a celebrity, how do you tell the difference between faking it and making it? The game is finesse, and with the allure of getting behind the wheel of the world’s most expensive cars, who wouldn’t want to play? In a world where likes and fame can be bought and the filtered facade of Instagram reigns supreme, VICE meets some of the legit — and the not-so-legit — players that cater luxury car rentals to the biggest rappers, athletes, and celebrities of the moment. Iran's Fashion Renaissance: VICE Reports

10:18
Click here to subscribe to VICE: http://bit.ly/Subscribe-to-VICE Before Iran's 1979 Islamic Revolution, citizens weren't required to wear the Islamic cover known as the hijab and the country's fashion was almost identical to that of the United States and Europe. After the revolution, though, the hijab became required by law. Although the standard black hijab is still commonplace—especially in rural areas in the country—Iran has recently seen a fashion renaissance, and cities like Tehran are becoming home to new and innovative designers. The clothing may still have to respect the Islamic dress codes, but the bright colors and designs would never have been seen a decade ago in Iran. Last summer, VICE went to Tehran to attend the third annual Fajr Fashion Show and speak with some of Iran's new designers. The country's top officials—responsible for granting permission for the show—were all seated in the front row to show show their support. And to make sure the models were adhering to the country's law. GULLYGUYLEO Explains His Internet Fame and Connection to Supreme

05:09
The latest iteration of our 'In Real Life' series takes us to Britain, where we spent the day with Leo Mandella, better known as @gullyguyleo. The young fashion icon has built an impressive following — over 500,000 Instagram followers — and was tapped to become the face of Converse‘s “Rated One Star” campaign. Mandella built his fanbase with outfits that incorporated increasingly rare goods from the likes of Supreme and Palace. After showcasing how he updates his school uniform with personalized flair, Mandella states, “Everyone was kinda dressing the same … it was more about dressing to fit in than dressing how you wanna dress.” After school, he dons yellow Golf le Fleur sneakers and a matching puffer vest, taking us back to his parents house. He walks us through the development of his personal style in this episode, starting with one of his first Supreme pieces and leading to his impressive collection of sneakers. Mandella gives his mom and friends credit for taking his now iconic Instagram photos before describing the evolution of his own style, noting “I don’t knock anyone’s hustle … I think that’s what people need to start doing, I think that’s why people hate.” Music: AFTA-1 Cubby (http://www.cubbysounds.com/) For up-to-date news and more: http://HYPEBEAST.com View more HYPEBEAST videos: http://YOUTUBE.com/user/HypebeastTV Stay connected with us on your favorite social media platform: http://FACEBOOK.com/hypebeast http://TWITTER.com/hypebeast http://TUMBLR.com/tagged/hypebeast http://PINTEREST.com/hypebeast http://INSTAGRAM.com/hypebeast

And they're certainly not the only people in the dollar-slice game in New York City. Ever since the Great Recession in 2008, dollar-slice spots started popping up all over Manhattan because people were in desperate need of a quick and cheap food option. Now there are more than 80 dollar-slice spots on the streets of New York. People gravitate to dollar slice because it's quick, easy, cheap, filling—and the slices themselves are pretty damn good considering the price. But, according to pizza historian Scott Wiener, dollar slices may be on the way out...so get them while you can! Boy Racer: Fast & Furious In The UK

22:59
Watch more episodes of Rule Britannia here: http://bit.ly/1kCmmkN Since the trend of teenagers modifying their "affordable" cars with go-faster stripes, neon under-lights, and dump valves really took off in the 90s, the media and public have been wary of boy racers. The British government has attempted to force them out of town centers with surveillance, and the cops spend their nights hunting them in unmarked cars. Understandably, this has driven boy racers to abandon the bright lights for industrial areas, country lanes, and parking lots where they can blare happy jungle, bassline, and pull off handbrake turns to their hearts' content. In the film, we follow the boy racers as they try—with varying degrees of success—to unify the scene in their local area. In Essex, we find car meets with hundreds of kids in kitted up cars, showing off luxury paint jobs and bass systems that ruin their girlfriends' hair dos. And in North London, boy racers take to highways to find their own fun—which, in the past, has had grave consequences. The summer brings with it super-sized car festivals, where everyone goes to race, get wasted and get their picture taken with pouting, bikini-clad promo models. Cars get scrapped, street races get dangerous, and things get wild in a parking lot. Boy Racer is a timely spotlight on what kids in souped-up cars are doing today, or tonight, in every town in the UK. The King of Falafel - Street Food Icons

09:49
King of Falafel & Shawarma has been serving mouthwatering Middle Eastern cuisine on the streets of Astoria for the last 17 years. The falafel recipe, with its unique oval shape, is a guarded secret of owner Freddy Zeideia, who mastered it with techniques he learned while growing up in Palestine. After being dissatisfied with the falafel and shawarma offerings in New York, Freddy took matters into his own hands by starting King of Falafel & Shawarma in 2002. Since then, his enterprise has grown, with a truck in Astoria, a cart in Midtown, and a newly opened restaurant in Queens. They also serve chicken over rice, kebabs, meatballs, and other Palestinian specialties. As Freddy would say, "Yeah Baby!" America’s First Bare Knuckle Fighting Championship

35:57
Since its heyday in the late 1800s, bare-knuckle boxing in the US has been relegated to parking lots and grimy basements, an underground sport that couldn’t find a way to bring itself above board. But in June of 2018—after spending years petitioning almost 30 states to sanction the brutal fights—promoter David Feldman finally managed to stage America's first-ever legal bare-knuckle boxing match in Wyoming. VICE went to the Bare Knuckle Fighting Championships in Cheyenne a few days ahead of the big event to hear how Feldman managed to pull it off, and to meet a handful of fighters for whom boxing—and even MMA fighting—just isn’t hardcore enough. KRINK: The Best Drip Ink in Graffiti

11:19
We caught up with Craig Costello, graffiti artist and creator of KRINK, the notorious brand responsible for drip style markers, mops, and fire extinguishers. As a punk kid growing up in Queens, Craig would scavenge for supplies to paint the walls and buildings of New York. His desire to create larger pieces and invent unique graffiti tools led to the development of his internationally recognized ink and paint brand Krink Inc. Craig's signature style morphed out of his modifications and innovations with paint tools; using a fire extinguisher filled with paint and paint markers rather than spray paint, his style became an instant hit in many cities around the world. This Is What Life Is Like Inside Assad's Syria | VICE on HBO

23:43
Six years of civil war has left most of Syria, a country once known for its ancient cities, in ruins. On the battlefield, Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad’s forces continue to fight a loose, and increasingly diminished collection of anti-government rebels. While in the country’s east, coalition forces have crippled a once fearsome ISIS, driving the group from its strongholds. War continues to rattle much of the country, and peace remains a notion far off in the distance, but one thing has come into focus with each passing day: Assad isn’t going anywhere. To see what life is like under Assad’s rule, VICE New sent Isobel Yeung to Syria just as the final bombs were falling over Aleppo. Hong Kong Tattoo Legend: VICE INTL (China)

15:01
With his traditional Chinese/Japanese patterns, Jimmy Ho, now in his sixties, remains one of the coolest and most forward thinking tattooists in Hong Kong. James Ho, Jimmy’s father, is widely recognized as Hong Kong’s very first local tattoo artist as he started inking foreign sailors as early as 1960s so if anything, Jimmy learnt everything from his old man. Jimmy opened his first tattoo shop at the age of 14, followed by more than 40 years serving clients including film stars and local gangsters. We visited his shop in Portland Street, Mong Kok, to talk to the veteran about his glorious career and “the golden age of Hong Kong tattoo”, while getting a koi fish tattoo on ourselves. How the Yakuza Changed Tattoo Culture in Japan | Under the Ink

08:14
Tebori describes the hand-carven technique of Japanese tattooing. It's a traditional method that dates back to the 17th century, but was once completely banned after being closely associated with the yakuza, Japan's organized crime syndicates. Tattooing overall in Japan is taboo. The government itself deems that one must be a licensed health professional to tattoo, but the government isn't issuing licenses to tattoo, leaving the profession in a legal grey zone. In the first episode of Under the Ink, we follow Horimasa Tosui, who tattoos in secret in order to practice his work. The Original New York Slice: The Pizza Show

24:12
New York is the birthplace of many things, but for today's purposes, we're sticking to pizza. Frank starts with a quick history lesson from Scott Wiener, the owner of Scott's Pizza Tours. Then, we hit the streets to see and taste the history for ourselves. The best thing about the city's pizza scene is that it's relatively young, so you can still eat slices from the ovens of the people that started it all and put New York pizza on the map. We meet the granddaughters of the man that literally brought pizza over from Naples, and even see the ovens that he used. Then, we hit all the best slices from Greenwich Village to Soho, and finish in Brooklyn at Luigi's Pizza, a place untouched by time. Japan's Yakuza: Inside the syndicate | The Economist

06:20
In 2011 a Belgian photographer was allowed entry into one of Japan’s Yakuza families. Over two years, he captured the lives of those living in the underworld. Click here to subscribe to The Economist on YouTube: http://econ.trib.al/rWl91R7 Japan's Yakuza: Inside the syndicate. With at least 50,000 members, Japan's Yakuza gangs form one of the world's largest criminal networks. Anton Kusters, a Belgian photographer, was allowed a rare glimpse inside a Yakuza family in early 2009. He documented the family for two years. The Ya-Ku-Za means 8-9-3, a losing combination in a card game similar to Blackjack. The exact origins of the Yakuza are unclear, but they are thought to have descended from masterless samurai in the early 17th century. In the 18th century, these poor, landless bandits began grouping together, creating families. The family Anton spent time with controls Kabukicho, Tokyo's red-light district; its business is largely prostitution. Other Yakuza criminal operations include drug trafficking, money laundering, gambling and bribery. The Yamaguchi-gumi is Japan's largest organised-crime group. By one estimate, its revenue in 2014 was $80bn. In 2013, Italy's 'Ndrangheta mafia has a turnover of around $69bn. In February 2011, towards the end of the project, Anton was at home in Europe, when he received a call from the Yakuza family. Miyamoto-san, a high ranking Yakuza boss, was in hospital after suffering a stroke. Anton returned, and was invited to attend the prominent Yakuza boss' funeral. 26:20
When in Rome...The Pizza Show is gonna eat a lot of pizza. Frank Pinello explores the Roman pizza scene, which is known for its two distinctive styles: pizza al taglio (rectangular and sold by weight), and pizza Romana tonda (round, thin and crisp). Whether you're grabbing a quick piece of al taglio at your local bakery or sitting down for a proper knife and fork pizza, there is no shortage of good pizza in Rome. From making pizza with Gabriele Bonci, the king of the al taglio style, to watching Stefano Callegari use ice cubes to create his iconic cacio e pepe pizza, Frank is in good pizza company.
