What Does it Take to Be A Fashion Designer?

Click for more: http://ww2.kqed.org/artschool/ Oakland high school student Zachary Fernandez made it to the finals on the first season of Project Runway Junior, then headed straight back to Oakland School of the Arts to continue his education as a designer. His newest collection, Kathmandu, was inspired by recovery efforts in Nepal after the devastating 2015 earthquake. Art School followed Fernandez's process as he sketched, sourced fabric, and designed his new project, revealed at a culminating fashion show in spring 2016. Hi, my name is Zachary Fernandez and I'm currently a fashion student. So I am starting my Kathmandu 2016 collection. My collection's gonna be debuting at my school fashion show, and so I have little under seven weeks to get this all put together. So our school assignment was to pick a city that we wanted to be inspired by for this collection. I ended with Kathmandu, Nepal, all of the trouble that they went through last year was really inspiring and I was able to take those ideas of imbalance and the destruction of culture and apply that to this new collection. These are the pieces that I ended up designing. They're ever-changing and they kind of just are always in flux. My sketching process involves a lot of images, a lot of mixed medias, I like to do collages, watercolors, acrylic paste, it's a real reflection of what my mind looks like. Here you have the final sketches that I've done. The sketching process for me is really a major step between just ideas and kind of this fantasy world that I've created in my mind to really functional wearable pieces. Fabric sourcing is one of my favorite things to do. It's really like a group activity, like meet a couple of friends, we'll just go, we'll explore the city, we'll get inspiration. So I'm looking for like a very pale blue that's almost like very silverish, and then I'm gonna be looking for a very deep, rust orange color. Okay, so I need to find this, but more grayish blue. The fabric store is one of those places that you go in with one idea and one concept and one thought, and you come out with like 500 more. This is it. - This is it! - This is it. - [Girl] Dude! - Hey! Yes! So I spend the majority of my time draping and it's definitely a part that will make or break a piece. I take a piece of muslin, which is just a really basic blend fabric, and I started sculpting it to the dress form. And then those mock-ups that I make of the dress form are then fitted to the model, and sometimes I try them on a model, I'm like, this is hideous, I don't know why, it just overpowers her or something happens and that leads to even better ideas and even more just, creativeness. When you design while you create, I just think it takes so much longer and you like pressure yourself so much more. So, my design mind is turned off. And it's just about sewing, and sewing, and sewing, and sewing, and sewing. So after I finish draping, I take a part of that mockup and I totally seam rip it and I re-pattern it, and then I cut out of my real fabric. It's always really nerve-wracking 'cause a lot of times the fabric's all that you have, either the budget doesn't allow for you to get more fabric, or there's simply not anymore left. It has this like box-like structure in it. The box is actually lined with horse-hair so that it can kind of take the shape and that's why I'm kind of trying to like manipulate it right now 'cause it just takes on whatever shape you really need it to. The show, oh the show. Six days, and I'm still cutting up fabric like, I don't think that's normal. There's always going to be that last minute hurry up and finish like state of being. I have a picture in my mind about how this is supposed to go, but who knows if it actually go that way. I think that there can be a lot of different ways to read the look. Obviously you look for like the main things like color, silhouette, is this an evening piece, is this a day piece and you just kind of put the garment and choose certain categories and that really helps people read fashion out, by the time the piece is on the runway I'm already thinking about a whole new collection and I'm really thinking something totally different, but it doesn't really hit me that these people, for them it's the first time that they've seen this. I've spent months and months planning and sketching and putting it together. If I see all these different things in these pieces, but no one else does, then it's kind of sad, but then it's also part of what makes fashion art, is because people see it in so many different ways. We are in my home, studio, bedroom combination in Berkeley, California. I have this look from Project Runway Junior, which was the first episode, and this look for my most recent collection. They really mean a lot to me 'cause they show how much progress I've made within the last four, five months.

Why Fashion Designers Don't Dress Fashionably

04:52
Do you ever wonder why fashion designers don't dress very well? I explain, from a fashion designer's perspective, why I don't dress fashionably. Ask me a question! Or leave a comment below to explain why you DO or DON'T dress fashionably! Article Version is here: https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/why-fashion-designers-dont-dress-well-emily-m-keller?trk=pulse_spock-articles Designers are figuring out 1 piece of the puzzle, where stylists are dealing with the big picture puzzle. I’m like many other fashion designers. I don’t dress particularly well or fashionably. Those of you out there that already know fashion designers don’t dress well, you’re ahead of most. Give me a second and let me help the others catch up and understand that lots of designers don’t dress fashionably. It’s a classic case of “The cobbler’s son has no shoes”, “There are only wooden spoons at the blacksmith’s house”, “The lady who sells fans fans herself with her hands”, “At the potter’s house water is served in a broken jug”, “The carpenter’s house always needs work, “The architect’s house is always crooked.” Why People think we dress well: -Stylists’ Confusion – We didn’t go to school to style outfits. We didn’t learn how to coordinate colors with shapes on different body types. We went to school to learn how to develop designs and how to execute them. I learned absolutely nothing about styling in my 4 years at FIT because my major wasn’t styling. Why We Don’t: 1. Workaholism – successful designers are obsessed with their work, therefore they tend to neglect all other aspects of their life. And dressing yourself is a completely different animal from dressing other people. And if I know I’m going to make no money off of dressing myself, then I would rather spend my time designing my clothing line. Time is money. Although, I do feel like this is changing with social media and each individual’s ‘personal brand’ is becoming more important. 2. Clothing Exhaustion – I design clothes all day for my target customer. The last thing I want to do when I get home is look at my own clothes and think about what to wear. 3. A designer isn’t usually their customer - Many designers’ target customer isn’t normally a category that they themselves fit into. This can be why you don’t see designers running around in their own pieces. It can be awkward to wear your own clothes if you know you’re not the type of person you’re designing it for. 4. Dressing Yourself Is Hard – Just as it’s easier to judge others actions and life choices, it’s also easier to know what others should be wearing. It’s hard to realistically judge your own character and therefore it’s also hard to dress yourself. Honestly, my boyfriend has a ton of say in what I wear. He is basically my personal stylist because I can’t figure out how to dress myself. Although I do sometimes ignore his strong opinions. 5. Simplifying life – This is a big trend right now. With all the minimalist living ideas popping up. But there are plenty of people who had this concept in mind before it became cool. Having a daily simplified ‘uniform’ saves time in one’s busy schedule. Think about it: if your whole closet was white button downs, blue jeans, and black sneakers, you would save so much time in the morning. Boom. Especially if you knew you looked good and felt confident in that ‘uniform’. Remember those days when the minute you left your house you regretted what you put on? You would never have a day like this ever again! You could predictably exude confidence. It’s lowering your risk of looking like an idiot. 6. We’re too cool. We’re basically just too cool to dress fashionably. Maybe it’s a bit of an elitist mentality. Everyone knows that fashion wannabes put a lot of effort into what they wear. Who are fashion wannabes you ask? They’re all the other fashion industry professions except for designers. This includes but is not limited to: stylists, buyers, merchandisers, bloggers … At FIT, the merchandise majors dressed up for class: heels, makeup, the works. The designers didn’t. Our work load was notoriously larger, so we didn’t have the time to pamper ourselves. Plus we had more crap to carry. You can’t wear heels while carrying a suitcase full of paper, fabric, scissors, and humongous rulers, without looking like an idiot. Dressing comfortably started as a necessity in school and wound up being a key differentiation between us and them as we transitioned into the working world. Too cool for school should really be too cool since school. In Episode 2 of the Fashion East documentary, we follow the journey of Lulu Kennedy’s newest recruits for their first shows with the designer mentorship scheme, and learn what exactly it takes to become part of Fashion East. First up is recent MA graduate and menswear designer Stefan Cooke, who digitally manipulates timeless fabrics and classic charity shop gems, reproducing the print onto flexible synthetic materials, dressing an army of princes for battle on the runway. To find out what it takes to become a designer, we join Lulu at an inspirational talk to fashion students at Central Saint Martins, meeting the up and coming names who have a Fashion East sponsorship in their sights. Finally we’re introduced to Charlotte Knowles, a womenswear designer that specialises in the tension between revealing and concealing, and the Fashion East team call her into the office for a chat about opportunities in the near future… How do you make the leap from fashion graduate to fully fledged designer? What do the Fashion East team look for in a newcomer? And after having just joined the scheme, will Stefan be ready to show at MAN? Why Choose Fashion Styling Over Fashion Design Career - Lulu Chen

01:57
In Chapter 5 of 10 in her 2011 Capture Your Flag interview with host Erik Michielsen, fashion stylist Lulu Chen answers "As an Artist, What Informed Your Decision to Choose Fashion Styling Over Fashion Design?" Chen gravitates toward magazines, stories, and editorials and, after many years working different part of the industry, chooses fashion design. She enjoys playing with the different designers' clothing and accessories and being able to use their colors, shapes, and textures as an artist uses a palette. She finds inspiration from designers who continuously produce new work. Lulu Chen is a New York City based fashion stylist. Chen earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree studying design and art history from the University of Michigan. View more career videos at http://www.captureyourflag.com Follow us on Twitter: http://www.twitter.com/captureyourflag Like us on Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/captureyourflag Erik Michielsen: As an artist, what informed your decision to choose fashion styling over fashion design? Lulu Chen: When I was younger I loved fashion and I didn’t know what part of fashion I really wanted to pursue, and then, you know, I definitely learned about – I worked in PR; I worked in sales; I worked in advertising; and I just always was drawn to magazines and doing stories and editorials. I guess what I love about styling versus just being a designer is I get to play with all of the different designers’ clothes. I get to play with all of the different designers’ clothing, and, you know, for me to do a whole world of different options. It’s a whole palette of silhouettes, colors, designs, shapes, ideas. There’s so much great design out there and so many great designers that that’s what I do. I get to play with all the different clothes and accessories. Erik Michielsen: What have designers taught you about being a more effective stylist? Lulu Chen: I think to keep looking for inspiration. I think they do an amazing job. They have to come up with – and now there are so many collections each year. There are so many. It’s not just a few. And they’re constantly producing new work, so that’s really inspirational just to keep producing new work, new thoughts, you know, or even I guess expanding upon what’s already there, you know, inspired by vintage things, but ultimately, I think they’re inspiring because they have to produce so many different collections in a year, and it shows you how to be resilient.

This video is meant to *prepare* you for the real world of what it’s like to be a fashion designer. And even though a fashion job is not as glamorous as it may seem... Nice to meet you, I’m Heidi. I teach fashion designers like you the real world skills you *actually* need to learn to succeed in this cutthroat industry. (You know, all the stuff you don’t learn at fashion school.) I’ve worked as a contract designer for over a decade and run SuccessfulFashionDesigner.com. I’ve been able to make a healthy living doing work I love in fashion. But I got started just like you, one step at a time. It began with some embarrassing hand sewn dresses and fashion sketches that would make a 3-year-old’s artwork look like a masterpiece. Then, things changed. I learned how design was done on a large scale. I learned how to get things into production. And I learned all the skills I wish I knew when I was first starting out. Now, I dedicate most of my time teaching you all of that. This content is hard to find anywhere else (because in fashion, people keep secrets), so I decided to create it...and give most of it away for free. Want more than what you find on YouTube? Please watch: "Why do you want to leave your current job - Medical Representative Interview - MR job Interview" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fHT7or7iEYg --~-- In fashion designer interview your outfit should be thoughtful, neat, reflect your personal style and it should tell me that you have an elevated taste level irrespective of what label you are wearing. The creative industries are famously a hotbed of emotion, tight deadlines and strong personalities so the interviewer will want to know how you would react in a high stress situation When in the interview take your lead from the interviewer’s body language as much as what they ask you. Do lots of research on the people you're scheduled to meet with, the company culture, go through their social media and look at photos of the team from the office, events, etc If your style is more vintage, stick with that. If you make your own clothes, choose a piece you made yourself

Fashion your future: Think more like a fashion designer | Suzi Vaughan | TEDxQUT

12:26
We live in times of unprecedented, disruptive change and uncertainty and most people find it challenging to thrive in those circumstances. If ‘design thinking’ is the new black, then thinking like a fashion design may just be the next big thing! This talk takes the idea of design thinking and translates it into a series of very practical tips that you can employ yourself, every day to help you think more optimistically in times of uncertainty and ambiguity. Professor Suzi Vaughan has settled (for now) in Brisbane, Australia having studied, lived and worked in Europe and Asia. After graduating from St Martins School of Art in London with a Ba Hons in Fashion, she started her professional career as a fashion designer, later moving into fashion education. Since 2011 she has been part of the executive team of a large Australian university. With over thirty years’ experience of design practice and teaching, she has become an advocate for the power and potential of design thinking. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at http://ted.com/tedx

For some fashion designers, the first step in creating a new design is researching current fashion and making predictions of future trends, using trend reports published by fashion industry trade groups. Other fashion designers create collections from inspirations they get from their regular surroundings, from the cultures they have experienced and places they have visited, or from various art media that inspire them. After they have an initial idea, fashion designers try out various fabrics and produce a prototype, often with less expensive material than will be used in the final product. They work with models to see how the design will look and adjust the designs as needed. Although most designers first sketch their designs by hand, many now also sketch their ideas digitally with computer-aided design (CAD) programs. CAD allows designers to see their work on virtual models. They can try out different colors, design, and shapes while making adjustments more easily than they can when working with real fabric on real people. The designers produce samples with the actual materials that will be used in manufacturing. Samples that get good responses from editors or trade and fashion shows are then manufactured and sold to consumers. Although the design process may vary by specialty, in general it takes 6 months from initial design concept to final production, when either the spring or fall collection is released. Some companies may release new designs as frequently as every month, in addition to releases during the spring and fall. The Internet and e-commerce allow fashion designers to offer their products outside of the traditional brick-and-mortar stores. Instead they can ship directly to the consumer, without having to invest in a physical shop to showcase their products lines. The following are examples of types of fashion designers: Clothing designers create and help produce men's, women's, and children's apparel, including casual wear, suits, sportswear, evening wear, outerwear, maternity, and intimate apparel. Footwear designers create and help produce different styles of shoes and boots. As new materials become available, such as lightweight synthetic materials used in shoe soles, footwear designers produce new designs that combine comfort, form, and function. Accessory designers design and produce items such as handbags, suitcases, belts, scarves, hats, hosiery, and eyewear. Costume designers design costumes for the performing arts and for motion picture and television productions. They research the styles worn during the period in which the performance takes place, or they work with directors to select and create appropriate attire. They also must stay within the costume budget for the particular production.

Will Artificial Intelligence Replace Fashion Designers? [Amazon, Stitch Fix, Myntra]

07:12
Every time I visit any Fashion events, this has been one of the topics that often come up. Can Artificial Intelligence AI replace fashion designers? Fashion designer thinks it can not but tech folks say it can be done. So I started researching into what has been done and found 3 great examples for you. I want to give you a glimpse of what Amazon, Stitch Fix, and Myntra have been doing and using AI to design clothes. *************** Amazon: AI fashion designer *************** The effort points to ways in which Amazon and other companies could try to improve the tracking of trends in other areas of retail—making recommendations based on products popping up in social-media posts, for instance. And it could help the company expand its clothing business * “There’s been a whole move from companies like Amazon trying to understand how fashion develops in the world,” says Kavita Bala, a professor at Cornell University who took part in a workshop on machine learning and fashion organized by Amazon last week. A number of forward-thinking retailers are already using social networks like Instagram and Pinterest to track the latest fashion trends and react quickly. An Amazon team at Lab126, a research center based in San Francisco, has developed an algorithm that learns about a particular style of fashion from images, and can then generate new items in similar styles from scratch—essentially, a simple AI fashion designer. This work uses a cutting-edge tool called a generative adversarial network, or GAN. It consists of two deep neural networks operating in tandem to learn efficiently from raw data. The GAN internalizes the properties of a particular style simply by looking at lots of examples, and it can then apply that style to an existing item of clothing. *************** Stitch Fix *************** The in-house brand of subscription fashion startup Stitch Fix, Hybrid Designs employs a data science team that works with the company’s order data to predict which clothes customers will want to wear. The team identifies viable gaps in the company’s inventory—clothes that people would buy but a designer hasn’t made yet, says Stitch Fix chief algorithm officer Eric Colson. It works like this: A collection of three algorithms generate a starting point. The first algorithm picks three “parents,” recommended pieces of clothing that could be either combined or used as a template for a new piece. The second suggests three different attributes that have been shown to complement the parents’ style—maybe a different neckline or sleeves. And the third throws in a little bit of randomness, a suggestion that isn’t typical for the previously suggested style but might be interesting. Together, these algorithms search through a space of 30 trillion potential combinations of, for example, blouse attributes, to ultimately give just nine suggestions. *************** Myntra - Moda Rapido *************** Algorithms that would get their machines to produce images of T-shirts based on the discovered favorable attributes. It turned out that one category of the machine-created designs outsold the comparable category in each of the other 12 private brands owned by Myntra. Some of the other machine-created designs sold poorly, but the company knew they were onto something really big. “The core of the Rapid idea was to do fast fashion in an intelligent way, given that we have both a tech and a fashion DNA,” said Kenghe. “In the initial phase of the project, there was less machine and more designer-input. Over a period of time, there’s been more machine and less supervision.” Here&Now & Moda Rapido: By September, Moda Rapido and Here&Now were together bringing in sales of Rs12-13 crore every month, making them among the top 15 brands at Myntra. The two contribute 12.5% of Myntra’s private brand's sales, said, Narayanan. Moda Rapido and Here&Now are Myntra’s most profitable brands, **************** Other Videos You Might Like: **************** 13 Areas Artificial Intelligence will affect Fashion Industry https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a9Lp51oiCTo What is Artificial Intelligence? 5 Fashion Designer Tips - How to Make Money (Fashion Start Up Advice) - Emile Vidal Carr

05:58
How to make money as a fashion designer? -Wear clothes that you've made: You don’t need to be an expert seamstress. At a minimum get yourself a sewing machine and start customising your own garments. However, if you want to take being a fashion designer to the next level, take proper sewing lessons, that way you will be able to learn the basic technical rules then as a designer it will be your job to break them. This rule applies to anything creative. -Make fabric shopping a part of you weekly routine - at least once a week: Live and breath fabric shops. You can't call yourself a fashion designer if you don’t know anything about fabrics. Get to know how they feel against your skin and the weight, how much they cost, then you can immediately start visualising what your going to make. -Be clear who your target maker is: When you start your brand, target a specific market. No brand in the world is for everybody. Once you stick to a particular market that you want to design for then you can establish your own style quicker and this is how customers will become loyal to you. By all means, in the future you can branch off and create new styles for different consumers, which is what the industry calls a diffusion line. -Be able to work under pressure: The fashion industry is all about people wanting things done yesterday. They key thing is to learn how to work fast without compromising quality and this is where you have to practise, practise and practise -Be patient: I can’t stress this enough. With the whole social media game, it looks like people are blowing up overnight and anyone who does blow up overnight is probably buying followers. Don’t worry about any of that, focus on becoming an expert and then people will naturally gravitate to your brand.
