World's largest floating offshore wind farm to be built off the coast of Scotland - TomoNews

01:36
PETERHEAD, SCOTLAND — Scotland's notoriously strong winds could pan out to be a blessing in disguise after the Scottish government recently approved plans for a floating wind farm right off of the Scottish coast. According to the Guardian, Statoil, a Norwegian energy company, plans to build a floating wind farm 15 miles off the coast of Peterhead, Scotland by the end of 2017. The floating wind farm, called the Hywind floating wind farm, will consist of five, 258-meter-high floating wind turbines. Each will have a floating steel tube filled with ballast as their base and they will be tethered to the seafloor by three moorings. Each of the five wind turbines will have a six-megawatt capacity, and together they will be able to power an estimated 20,000 homes. Because they're not actually attached to the seabed, these types of wind turbines are cheaper than traditional ocean turbines and can be placed in deeper waters. Existing offshore wind turbines, which need to stand on concrete or steel foundations, are expensive if anchored to depths greater than 40 meters, reported the Guardian. Statoil's goal with this $232 million pilot project is to demonstrate a way to harness wind power that can increase the global market potential for turbines. Offshore wind is a key component of Europe's plan to source 20 percent of its total energy consumption from renewables, reported the Independent. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Full story of Hywind Scotland – world’s first floating wind farm

09:13
Some people thought we were crazy when we put a giant wind turbine on top of a floating spar structure and towed it out to sea. But it turned out to be the future, and the future is now. This year we made a giant leap forward as we installed and started producing electricity from the world’s first floating wind farm. The 30 MW Hywind Scotland pilot park will demonstrate the feasibility of future commercial floating wind farms that could be more than four times the size. This will further increase the global market potential for offshore wind energy, contributing to realising Statoil’s ambition of profitable growth in renewable energy and other low-carbon solutions. Each stands 500 feet above the water, with another 250 feet below. It's an expensive project, made possible by the participation of Scotland's government as part of the U.K.'s renewable energy goals. But the payoff could be big, too. A floating wind farm can operate in much deeper water than traditional wind farms. 5 Wind Turbines which Failed (Enviromental friendly?)

02:46
Windmill Failures Nearly 120 wind turbines catch fire each year, according to a research - ten times the number reported by the industry. The researchers claim that out of 200,000 turbines around the world, 117 fires take place annually - far more than what is reported by wind farm companies. Fire has a huge financial impact on the industry; Each wind turbine costs more than £2 million and generates an estimated income of more than £500,000 per year. Any loss or downtime of these valuable assets makes the industry less viable and productive. Fires are a problem for the industry, impacting on energy production, economic output and emitting toxic fumes, this could cast a shadow over the industry’s green credentials. Wind turbines catch fire because highly flammable materials such as hydraulic oil and plastics are in close proximity to machinery and electrical wires. These can ignite a fire if they overheat or are faulty. Lots of oxygen, in the form of high winds, can quickly fan a fire inside a turbine. We look forward to your feedback ! Located 100km off the island of Borkum in the North Sea, the 80 turbines are said to constitute the country's largest wind farm. Bard Energy claims it will power up to 400,000 households, and would go some way to achieving the goal of being nuclear free by 2022. "Without this powerful offshore wind farm in the North Sea the nuclear phaseout is impossible. If the new government stands for their decision of a nuclear phaseout from summer 2011, they should become a reliable and constructive partner of offshore wind energy again as soon as possible," explained Michael Baur, Chief Executive of the Bard Group. But the main challenge facing any new government will be getting the power to the people. The recently opened Riffgatt offshore wind farm has yet to be connected to the mainland, and experts say the electric grid is in dire need of an upgrade. So, whoever wins September's elections will have to think about how to finance a renewable future. Wind Farm Is Floating On The Ocean — Here's How It's Built

01:55
The world's first floating offshore wind farm started producing electricity off the Scottish coast on Wednesday. Hywind Scotland, as the project is known, consists of five huge linked wind turbines which float over deep ocean water while loosely tethered to the seafloor. They were constructed on land in Norway, and dragged across the North Sea earlier this summer before being moored off the Aberdeenshire coast. The wind farm is expected to generate enough power for 20,000 households at full capacity according to Statoil, the Norwegian state energy company behind the project. Wind energy: Deep-sea wind farm in Atlantic could meet world's power needs - TomoNews

06:15
STANFORD, CALIFORNIA — The entire world could be powered by one deep-sea wind farm stretching across the Atlantic, a new study finds. Building an installation the size of India would could meet the whole world's power needs, according to a study published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. Doctors Anna Possner and Ken Caldeira from the Carnegie Institution for Science at Stanford University pointed out wind speeds over the ocean are on average 70 percent higher than over land, the Independent reported. Land-based wind farms have an upper threshold in the amount of energy that can be converted into electricity due to the combined drag of the spinning blades. Other studies have found land-based farms to have a limit of about 1.5 watts per square meter. Possner and Caldeira say it would be possible to produce 6 watts per square meter in the North Atlantic. Power output would be seasonal, with levels dropping to a fifth of the yearly average during the summer time. Several engineering challenges would have to be overcome. A deep-sea wind farm would have to operate in remote and harsh conditions where waves frequently exceed three meters (9.8 ft), according to the researchers. Laying transmission cables that stretch across the ocean floor and then connect to floating turbines in open ocean would be another obstacle. ------------------------------------------------------------- TomoNews is your best source for real news. With a hub height of 135 m (443 ft), rotor diameter of 126 m (413 ft) and a total height of 198 m (650 ft), this large model can generate up to 7.58 megawatts of power per turbine. The power output of the generator was changed from 6 MW to 7 MW after technical revisions were performed in 2009. The weight of the foundation of the turbine tower is about 2,500 t, the tower itself 2,800 t, the machine housing 128 t, the generator 220 t, the rotor (including the blade) 364 t. The total weight is about 6,000 t. The first turbine of this model was installed in Emden, Germany in 2007. The list price of one unit is $14 million plus install costs. Hywind Scotland - the world’s first floating wind farm

03:03
Some people thought we were crazy when we put a giant wind turbine on top of a floating spar structure and towed it out to sea. But it turned out to be the future, and the future is now. This year we made a giant leap forward as we installed and started producing electricity from the world’s first floating wind farm. The 30 MW Hywind Scotland pilot park will demonstrate the feasibility of future commercial floating wind farms that could be more than four times the size. This will further increase the global market potential for offshore wind energy, contributing to realising Statoil’s ambition of profitable growth in renewable energy and other low-carbon solutions. Offshore Wind Turbine Helicopter Pickup and Dropoff

09:20
Transfer from Siemens SWT-6.0-154 Wind Turbine at the DONG Energy Westermost Rough Project. Aviation services provided by Uni-Fly A/S. January 16th, 2015 The pickup is a rare type where the pilot must direct the helicopter nose first towards the turbine. Typically turbine will be turned 90 degrees to the wind so that the pilot can direct the helicopter with the door and winch along the side facing the turbine. A loss of power prevented turning this turbine. Furthermore, to prevent the brakes from remaining set for a long period of time the rotor was left in idling mode when the helicopter arrived. As the blades pass in the wind stream ahead of the helicopter, turbulence makes the job of keeping the helicopter steady even more difficult. General info: Sea conditions prohibited transfer to and from turbine by vessel so helicopter was used to access turbine for maintenance. Wind speeds during transfer varied between 15 - 20 m/s (33 - 45 mph). For normal transfer vessels, the trip to the wind farm from the port of Grimsby is 2 hours. Flight time to site by helicopter from Humberside Airport is around 12 minutes. Passenger training requirements for helicopter transfer include, HUET (Helicopter Underwater Evacuation Training), Tower Rescue Up, and Helicopter Hoist Operator training. Do we really see ships going over the curve if we do this is going to happen at around 3-4 miles? Standing with 10' of elevation the horizon is just under 4 miles, an object 11.2 miles away should be loosing 35 feet of the target hidden to curvature. NOTE the tidal line on the rocks, when looking further out to Sea the tidal lines are all still visible on all of the wind turbines. Gwynt y Môr (English: Sea Wind) is a 576-megawatt (MW) offshore wind farm located off the coast of North Wales and is the second largest operating offshore ...
