Cite Your Sources: Article from a Periodical in APA

This work is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 4.0 International License http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-sa/4.0/ Transcript: This short Library video will help you cite an Article from a Periodical in APA style. Let's use this example of an article that we found online. To create a reference, we need to make sure that we have all of the information that is required for an article to be cited in APA style. This includes Author, Year, Article Title, Journal Title, Volume, Issue and page numbers. This is the standard format. First let's find the author's name. Next, we need the year of publication. Next, we need the article title. ... and the journal title. Now, for the volume and issue. Hmmm. Can't find it? Where else can you look? Let's go back to our results where we found the article to see if it gives us more information. There it is. The page number is here, too. When looking for bibliographic information to cite a journal article, check: - First Page - Footer - Search Results Page Online articles follow the same rules as printed articles. However, you also need to provide either the DOI or the URL so that your reader can find the source. You can usually find the DOI on the first page of the electronic journal article in the header or footer. If the electronic journal article doesn't have a DOI use the URL of the journal homepage. Need help? Ask Us. Chat, email, phone, or drop by. This concludes the library video on how to cite an Article from a Periodical in APA style.

MLA citation--Database

03:03
Transcript: This video will show how to create MLA works cited entries for database sources. First, look at your handbook's directions for citing databases. I'm using the Diana Hacker online handbook. A database citation usually has two parts: publication information about the source and information about the database. This means you will need to determine what type of source you are viewing (magazine, newspaper, journal article, etc.) and follow the citation information for that type of source. Most databases have a citation generator of some sort. I recommend starting with that and then modifying it based on the handbook information. On Opposing Viewpoints, use the Citation Tools link to generate a citation. Select MLA and download. The first citation is the one to use. On ProQuest, click Cite this. APA is the default style, so select MLA from the dropdown menu. On CQ Researcher, click CiteNow! Then select MLA style. Once you have copied and pasted these to your works cited page, start identifying where there need to be modifications. The Opposing Viewpoints source is from a book which we can see from the publication information. A book (like all other sources) requires an author, but this citation does not include one. If we look at the article, we can find the author and add it to the citation. Many ProQuest sources are from magazines and newspapers. This one is from the LA Times, so it will follow newspaper format for the first half of the citation. One error in this citation is the order of the author's name. It should begin with the last name. All CQ Researcher articles are journal articles. This citation is missing information about the database. When all of these errors are fixed, it will look like this. Here are the changes that were made. You can check all of your citations against the handbook information. Remember to double space your entries and use hanging indentation.
